  • Better than razor v2 in some respects
The subscription seems unnecessary first and foremost. It doesn’t give you much benefit for $40 a year. The build feels a little more flimsy than the razer controller. The ability to use this on an iPhone 15 pro max is pretty nice and it handles simultaneous inputs that the razer didn’t seem to support on the iPhone 15 pro max. The backbone app is very very polished and is put together nicely. The backbone just works with every app and the PlayStation app just lets it through as I’d expect seeing as my model has a PlayStation logo on the back of it. The screen recording works and all the buttons seem to work well. I didn’t see a way to map any of the few extra buttons to say the PlayStation. Button for PS Remote Play but that button is always displayed center screen so easy enough to just use the touch screen. The type c version I received worked with my iPhone 15 pro out of the box without needing a firmware update as far as I could tell. The buttons feel clicky on some and soft on others but over it’s pleasant enough to play games on it. It seems easy enough to pack and it doesn’t need to be charged separately which is a nice plus over just using a PlayStation controller. The direct to twitch is cool and 1080p60 gameplay recording is nice too. It supports more than just 15s at a time. It starts a “broadcast” to the backbone app and the app has a nice video gallery. I thought it had some sort of auto highlight feature in the description but I’m not seeing that anywhere in the app. If you can pick this up on sale it would be ideal but overall I think even not on sale it is the best overall experience having PlayStation official support without have to do tricks like disconnecting the controller and reconnecting after connecting to your PlayStation. This thing works and is rather well polished even if the buttons and frame feel a little flimsy. ... show more

  • Great Controller for Android
While the library of actual Android games that support controllers like this is smaller than I'd want, for emulation the Backbone is great! I've got SNES to N64 to PSP to Wii, and a lot in-between. It's quite nostalgic to play Sonic Adventure, for example, using a Dreamcast emulator. As far as comparison to other products, I can speak to this versus the Xbox Kishi V1. For me, the Backbone just feels higher in build quality. The Kishi V1 does have a smaller size when it's contracted, but the piece that connects the left and right sides of the controller is wobbly and doesn't feel stable until a phone is put into it. The Backbone is extremely solid in this respect. Worth noting especially is the Backbone works easily with my Pixel 7 Pro (which has the large camera bump/bar) and my phone has a case on it. The Kishi V1 really needs the case to come off for it to work (and my phone case is extremely thin). Extra things I like is the USB passthrough charging, which the Kishi also has, but more than that the headphone jack, which the Kishi does not. It's just nice to have the option for an old fashioned wired headphones connection rather than always needed to use Bluetooth. The downloadable Backbone app from the Play store is a nice-to-have option as well. It gives you a Steam-like interface that lets you launch games, and browse your library. Pros: - Basically everything above Cons: - The geometric buttons are a little more "clicky" than I'd like. With headphones on you don't notice, but they are kind of loud. - The L2 and R2 triggers are very easy to accidentally actuate. Not a big deal overall, but I've pushed them accidentally on occasion. - The Backbone app is supposed to launch automatically when your phone plugs into the controller, but frequently this doesn't happen. It launches and then closes immediately. Again, not a big deal since there's a dedicated button to launch it, which always works. Overall: Excellent controller for Android games that support this and especially for retro emulation gaming. The cons for me are nowhere near being a deal breaker. And while it doesn't come with a case, there are plenty of case options out there (on Amazon for example), some of which are shaped in the exact silhouette of the controller. Great purchase and very worth it! ... show more

  • It works
I got this during prime day for the discount and so far it works as I thought it would. My biggest gripe would probably be that the controllers are a little small for my hands, but I didn't want to lug around a separate controller (ps5, Xbox, etc.) so this was a good option. I've heard people say that some phones might wobble between the controller and I've noticed some slight movement, but nothing that makes it feel like my usb-c port is going to get messed up from using it. I have a Pixel 6a and one thing I had to do to improve the fit is take off my glass protector for the camera on the back. That part of the phone is already sticking out so once I removed that it fit a lot better. I also have a pretty thin profile case and I couldn't keep it on to use the controller. The app you can download for this controller is pretty good. It brought up any games, emulators or streaming services I had on my phone in a nice little UI. Some of my emulators were not supported by this controller according to the company, but I was able to open those emulators outside the app and map the controller easily in the actual emulator menu. Most of the emulators just worked. I've definitely been finding myself using this more than other controller accessories for Android I own. It's fairly easy to lean against your lap or leg while you're sitting and be comfortable. Would be cool if it was in the layout of an actual playstation controller, but there is bearly anything to grab onto on the bottom, so I could see it being harder to use that way. Still it's a good android controller and I'm happy with my purchase. ... show more
