I am a convert. I have owned Samsonite exclusively going back to when I was a teen. So along comes the Away product line and what sold me on Samsonite is what is selling me on Away. Mainly the durability and warranty, but you can add style and functionality to the mix, with Away a winner on all fronts. This comes at a price premium but you know, you get what you pay for. Really like the Away product line, so far we have a hard side trunk and now we have added this softside 29 inch checked bag. I’m not a big fan of softsides, mainly because they are heavier and tend to not stand up to the inevitable abuse that is inflicted on checked bags from baggage handlers. The hardsides tend to hold up better. This softside’s exterior has a really thick nylon material with some padded quilts that I think will provide some level of shock protection when hurled from conveyor belt to conveyor belt and make it less likely to get ripped. Unlike my previous softside the exterior pockets are integrated into the “lid” and do not protrude which reduces the risk of tearing. These pockets are not lockable so consider that when you purchase. The other difference in this piece is that there is a single deep storage area that has the standard Away style compression flap that keeps things stable during transit. This is different from our other checked bags that have two halves for storage with the top half being smaller. I consider the compression flap with integrated storage the “killer app” and attribute this design feature for allowing fragile souvenirs to survive our last trip from the far east in our hardside trunk. The softside is a bit heavier than our other luggage: the Samsonite 28” Omni PC hardside is 11.7 lbs, the Away 31” Trunk is12.4 lbs, while the Softside comes in at 14.3 lbs. In this price-point for luggage you are not incredibly weight conscious to begin with but it does count towards the overall heft of the thing when fully loaded. The “duellie” truck set for the wheels on the bag is the same design as the Trunk and makes for a pretty easy roll over most surfaces with the bag fully upright and not tilted, which is our preferred method of rolling (while fast walking to our connection!). This is especially useful in crowded airports while winding your way through distracted travelers from the international to domestic terminals. The TSA lock on this is a separate padlock that you loop through the two main zippers and comes with. The softside is expandable but not as much as our Omni which is a beast when expanded and moves like one! Durability, functionality, and style, if this softside is anything like our Trunk I expect it will hold up well for our trips despite the inevitable abuse. I’m a convert thanks to Away.

It has so many zippered compartments and placed to keep things! The part I will refer to as the lid has 2 hidden zippered compartments on the outer fae of the suitcase as well as a large mesh zippered inside pocket that is split in two sections, which is great to keep things from gathering in a heap at the bottom of the bag. There is the divider which has a laundry bag and a lock tucked away in one of its two zippered areas. This divider acts as a compression plate as well to help you fit a few more things when you think it is already full. The suitcase is soft sided and mine is the color "Clay Pink". I chose this color because it stands out in a sea of suitcases at the cruise terminal! And of course because I love pink! The handle is comfortable when rolling it around the airport and the handles are padded. There is also a thoughtful spot you can use on the bottom of the suitcase to put your hand in to lift it onto the bed sideways. I also own a set of Away hard shell and I already prefer my new set of soft side because everything goes in one side. It is easier to open the suitcase when everything is on one side. I just find it easier to use and packing larger items is easier when the suitcase isn't split into 2 halves. The wheels works amazingly well, the zippers are high quality and the fabric is tough and designed to repel water. Overall this suitcase is a solid choice from a brand I know and trust to deliver a quality product with an outstanding warranty. PS Don't forget to grab the little package out of the bottom of the box the bag comes in that has the luggage tag in it- it can be a little confusing but I looked it up online and then it made perfect sense!

Okay, let me start by saying I don't usually have super nice luggage. I don't get bottom of the barrel stuff, but definitely not top tier either. This luggage is amazing though and I think I've been converted! As soon as you open the box you can tell it's a quality suitcase. The wheels roll beautifly and are really quiet. Actually, I put it in my three seasons room that doesn't have perfectly even floors and it started quitely rolling away. The handle has two different heights to it and clicks up and down smoothly. And the amount of pockets on this thing is awesome! It has two front zipper pockets, and inside little zipper bag, a large zipper compartment on the inside lid that separated into two sections, and an extra zipper compartment bag that slides into the bottom of the suitcase and is also separated into two sections. It even comes with a dirty clothes bag and a little TSA lock. This suitcase is huge! We're taking a trip to Disney next year and I was looking for something that I could put mine and my daughter's stuff in for a week-long trip. This will definitely work. And it's expandable just in case I overpack, which is likely. I really like that the straps on the inside are adjustable. I'm used to having the elastic straps that you have to stuff things under and they get squished, but the straps in the Away luggage are really soft and you can make them larger so your clothes don't get wrinkled. The suitcase is also pretty light and easy to move around. I'm pretty excited to finally have a nice suitcase to take on vacation! Even though the price it a little high, the quality and size is totally worth it.
