  • Form, Function and Quality at a Price Premium
Color: Tango Red
I use to travel frequently for my work so know a thing or two about luggage. I’ve had cloth luggage with ripped pockets and broken wheels, which has pushed me into the hardside category for its low weight and hardier construction. For the checked baggage crowd that is also discerning and feature conscious the Away line of luggage is appealing. For my test I compared their 31” Trunk to a 28” Samsonite hardside bag that I have (Omni expandable). Both have spinner wheels and are in the hardside category. First I started with the weight test, the less weight you have the more you can cram in there without paying for excess baggage fees that start after 50 lbs. The Samsonite came in at around 10 lbs, the away was around 12, not a huge difference but notable. Next form and function, both have pretty decent storage capacity but the expandable Samsonite is the clear winner here, there is a trade off as the Samsonite takes up more space at your destination. I do like the internal storage on the Away with the top clam shelf half having two zippered mesh storage spaces for toiletries and such. Also the Away has a handy compression system with cinch straps on the larger side, pack all of your items, place the rectangular compression piece over top of everything and then cinch it down tight, pretty cool. As far as styling the Away wins this one, from the color to the beefy stitching where the clamshell halves come together, it just looks better. Both are easy to move around on hard floors with the Away bag being a bit better with it’s different wheel design. I also like the addition of the handhold on the bottom of the Away piece which the Samsonite lacks. The zippers were about the same but the form feature of the TSA locking mechanism was slimmer and less obtrusive on the Away (take this as meaning less likely to be broken off with rough handling). I did notice that the material construction of the Away is more robust with less give on the hardside material than my Samsonite. As far as warranties go, the Samsonite has a 10 year compared to the lifetime warranty provided by the Away. The biggest difference between the two is the price, the Away comes in at more than double what you would pay for a comparable Samsonite. I really like this premium piece, nice features, nice look and great build quality, would recommend if you can stomach the price point. ... show more

  • Well thought out and fantastic design
Color: Cloud Gray
Once upon a time, about 28 years ago, I sold luggage for a company that is no longer in business. I've sold Tumi, Samsonite, Travelpro, etc and I've gotten a decent idea of what makes for a good suitcase. They haven't changed a ton in these years, but some of the changes are really nice. This suitcase has a great design. I love the foot-feet on 2 sides which supports the case. I love the integrated locking mechanism that secures the case closed and doesn't flop around. I love the secured wheels and their ability to move the suitcase in any direction and remain standing (or tilted if you prefer when dragging through an airport). The sides are sturdy and tough, and I expect it will survive most baggage handling issues. I will say that it is a slightly taller suitcase, but not as wide - which actually seems to aid in its ease of use. Overall, I may have a new favorite brand of suitcase and I would expect this one to last for a very long time (decade or more with moderate use). ... show more

  • Incredibly nice luggage
Color: Sea Green
Coming from samsonite, this suitcase is incredibly nice. It has plenty of room for two kids and two adults to pack for a four day trip. The quality of the zipper, lock, interior, and outside material is impeccable. When loaded full it still rolls through the airport well. We did check it as it's large and heavy. But after both flights, it shows no real damage. And most importantly, our items were protected well. This Trunk is better than dad and mom hauling two midsized suitcases as well backpacks. We got trough the whole trip with one backpack, and one suitcase. It fit fine in the trunk of our rental sedan. ... show more

  • Doesn't feel as premium as I would expect from this price point
Color: Cloud Gray
This is my first foray into Away luggage. For context, I own/have owned Delsey, Samsonite, Tumi and Ricardo luggage. I have always heard good things about Away, so I was curious to try it. My first impression of it was that I was surprised how flimsy it feels. My Ricardo luggage is much more solid feeling. The Away luggage doesn’t feel much different than some of the inexpensive luggage I’ve seen at discount stores. The two clam shells feel pretty thin. The zipper feels sturdy but does not glide well—I found it gets caught up a lot while zipping and unzipping. The inside is consiserably nicer—fully lined with lots of pockets and a piece that comes out that’s meant to be used for compression—it can be tightened to compress your clothes. It comes with a laundry bag and an eraser for scuff marks which is good because the gray is pretty light and will get scuffed up in no time. One side of the suitcase is much deeper than the other side which is pretty shallow. The telescoping handle feels sturdy—definitely sturdier than cheaper luggage—and it has a lock that’s integrated nicely into the case. I put it next to my large 30” Ricardo piece which was probably about ¼-1/3 of the price of the Away bag and the Away is maybe half an inch taller and and half an inch deeper (although when expanded, my Ricardo is deeper), while the Ricardo is a full 4” wider. I haven’t tried to pack the Away yet to do a comparison, but it would seem that the Ricardo would hold considerably more. So I would consider this Away bag more of a medium sized bag for my purposes. Maybe medium+. For the price, I expected the suitcase to feel more premium than it does. I do really like that the company has a lifetime warranty for it which from other reviews I’ve read online, it seems that they generously uphold. I have had to replace my Samsonite and Delsey luggage periodically (the Ricardo set was purchased in the last year so I don’t know how well it will hold up longterm), so I could see the allure of paying a premium one time to get the peace of mind that it's the last time you’ll have to purchase luggage. That said, I only wish the luggage itself felt more premium. ... show more
