  • Even if you don't use the scribe part, the pencil is great.
So I got this to scribe some floor pieces to an uneven wall. It worked exactly as described as long as you take a few min to get familiar with it and how to snug everything up and set it up right. Anyway, It worked flawlessly for what I needed. I don't really have very many times that I'll personally need this intricate of a scribe so I was very pleased that the pencil comes off and I use that all the time as a carpenter's pencil in the woodshop. It comes with extra lead for the pencil as well so I'm probably not going to need refills anytime real soon. If you need to scribe around on some uneven, curved, tricky joints, this seems to be the ticket. ... show more

  • Has a learning curve
I will buy anything woodwork related. I saw this as an interesting tool for which I don't have a need. I read the directions, watched some videos and I can tell at some point I will have occasion to use it. I don't know if I'll figure it out on the first attempt, but I can tell how it could be useful! As for the tool itself, it is build ok. It's half metal, half plastic, and the knurled knobs are ok, but just a little too tight and you can't move it, and a little too loose, and there is no resistance. I'm sure a drop of lubricant here or there would sort it out. I guess if you're doing something like making jigsaw puzzles and such, this is a great tool to have on hand. ... show more

  • You still need skill to make this work properly
This tool seems to have two functions: act like a compass, and follow and record a contour. Watch the vendor's video that's part of this product's description because it gives a better understanding than the still images, which may not immediately make sense. When acting like a compass, this tool has a pin for the center of rotation, and a lead pencil with 2.8mm lead. You need compass-usage skill to use this mode. No instructions are included on what a compass can do for you. Using a compass is a basic woodworking, sheet metal, pattern making, and geometry skill that you bring to it. When using this tool to follow a contour, it falls completely on you to hold the orientation of this tool fixed as you slide it about, trying to trace the original contour and while making a copy with the pencil lead. Don't forget, the pencil lead needs enough pressure to write, so that's another aspect you have to control. This tool can be configured in more than one posture, and comes with probes of different length to trace out the original contour and write it down - even if it has deep clefts. This tool does not give you any support to keep it in a fixed orientation, even though that's needed, and your natural wobbliness will make an incorrect outline. When you watch the video, take note of how robotically the tool is moved around, holding the same orientation. That's what you have to do, too. You can't change the orientation of the tool even when going around a curve, and this is shown in the video, too. I've attached a copy of the six-page manual, page by page, that comes with this tool. The tool comes in pieces, with lead, and the manual shows how to put it all together. Also shown is how to use as a compass and how to probe at two depths while holding the orientation still and following a contour. The hardest part of all this is holding the orientation steady as you move the tool about and try to write with the pencil, and for this you are essentially on your own because you have to develop a feel. It's good that this tool is reconfigurable and can conform to various situations. If you develop the skill, this tool will let you use that skill in many situations. Don't expect to be accurate with this tool right out of the box. One last note: you are reading a Vine review, which means this product was sent to me without my having to pay for it. I never believed Vine reviews, I felt people would say anything to get free stuff. The Vine program, at least for me, is a little different: I only get what I go out of my way to ask for, and everything I get is reported as income to me, so I'll have to pay income taxes at what will probably be reported as list price. I may actually lose on the deal. But I wanted this product, it was something I hoped would help me fit irregularly shaped trim pieces together, but now I have to develop skill to use it properly and get past my clumsy attempts so far, I didn't know this tool existed before I saw it available for review, and, hopefully, my experience has been a help to you. ... show more

  • It's okay.
I like the tool and all its functions work. My only problem is that the "scribing" function of this tool is not all that great. The marking tool has a plastic body and feels flimsy and I wonder how long it will last. The extension piece for the contour gage is made out of plastic too and is "loose" so it could get lost. Maybe they could have included a case or sheath or something. I took off a star because of the plastic construction on the marking tool and extension. ... show more

  • No directions and parts don’t fit properly
Some of the basic points of this are easy to use and figure out. However the lack of instruction make it very difficult to understand how it assembles. I don’t know if mine just came defective or if I’m just not smart enough to figure it out but nothing really seams to fit. For example in the photo it shows where the tracer point is however it won’t fit anywhere on this. I see a spot it looks like it should go but the plastic slot is too small. It’s great for drawing circles lol. ... show more

  • Good set up for contour scribing, not as comfortable to use as compass
This looks to be a well made tool, with broad leads to mark with. It doesn't take long to figure out how to get things up and running. I have to commend the makers on a rather detailed set of instructions that seem to be rare these days. Nothing seems poorly made or loose on this, perhaps with the exception of the extension piece that may need to be attached for tracking into deep pockets. Its hold is perhaps dubious, but I wonder if it will be something I lose before I need it. One design flaw I noted is that If one was to use this as a compass to draw a circle there is no handle to grasp and pivot it around. In the photo I'm pointing to where that would normally be. Yes, you could make this work, but it's almost surprising it was not part of the plan. I would suggest holding onto the box. You will have to detach the hefty mechanical pencil from the arm, but you'll want to keep the extension arm, the four spare leads, and the instructions all together. ... show more
