  • Pretty good. Could be better.
Size: X-Large Color: Columbia Blue/White
Pleated cheer skirts seem to have fallen out of favor and These box-pleated cheer skirts with the contrast-color insets appear to be unpopular if not particularly hard to find. The cheerleading supply houses tend to have a minimum order & the online secondhand marketplaces are a crap shoot so I was lucky to find one at a reasonable price in the correct color-combo (Columbia blue & white) to match an 80s cheer sweater I got for a screaming deal on eBay. The more pleats, the splashier they look; This one has 8 pleats- the bare minimum for a legit cheerleader look & the minimum number of pleats in this type of skirt. 16 is the maximum but I think its overkill. 10 or 12 pleats is optimal, IMO but you take what you can get. My waist measures 30.5” & my hips are 42”, I’m 5’5” & my dress size is a 10 or 12- which isn’t great because for Letter-size garments a 10 is paired with an 8(which is too small) and a 12 is paired to a 14(which is too large. So, naturally I fell between sizes for this too. I ordered an extra-large but I should have ordered a large. That was the sizing recommendation Amazon gave me but historically, those haven’t been very reliable- especially with shoes & when shopping for men’s/unisex tops for myself. Yeesh. You try to buy a simple teeshirt that isn’t a clingy cap-sleeve “girly” tee and they steer me to an XL!! Is it any wonder I have a complex, Amazon?! So, if it’s not a huge pain in the tukus, I’ll be sending this one back and exchanging it for a large. If that’s even possible, that is! Most websites that sell cheerleading uniforms have a “no return” policy; even stock items like this skirt (which I’ve seen elsewhere online including the manufacturer, Augusta Sportswear) are final sale. So fingers crossed because if I can’t send it back, I either have to deal with it or try to sell it because with the way this skirt is constructed, taking it in or tightening the elastic is not an option. This seems like a reasonably well-constructed garment but I’m not 100% thrilled with it. The skirt & sweater are the same color-combo: columbia blue & white but they were made by two entirely different companies (2-3 decades apart, no less) so it’s not a perfect color match; it’s close enough though, so I’m not stressing, let alone docking points for that. Ditto the temporary stay-stitching on the hem. Well, not for it being there. It doesn’t confuse or anger me. I’m not an idiot & That was true BEFORE I went to design school or even when I started to learn to sew (age 11,12ish)I know it’s only there to keep the pleats in position & meant to be removed- UNLIKE some people I won’t mention whose review was undeservingly voted as helpful (despite being so misinformed that it amounts to a string of lies) presumably by people who are similarly situated in the cognition department. I am knocking off half a star because I DON’T like the way it was done. I can almost (but not quite!) forgive the gal who sent hers back in a huff & gave it that stunningly incorrect 1 star review. Or at any rate, I can see how she might have arrived there because the stitching & thread used to temporarily tack-down the pleats is fairly indistinguishable from the actual hem. An X on each pleat or even a longer machine stitch, ideally in a totally different color or maybe some note on the packing slip would have helped them out with the folks that gave this one star and/or a snotty review. I’m pretty knowledgable about garment construction so I can only imagine how confusing it would be to someone who’s only experience with clothing is buying it or how big a pain it might be for a novice to remove without hacking at the actual hem. I DO know what I’m doing and I still had to give it a second look. I’m lucky that I decided to return this one because If I’d kept it, there’s a good chance I’d have started hacking away at the hem! I think as long as I’m careful to only snip the threads at the juncture of the pleats in the seam going over the tops of them, use a seam ripper judiciously & pull at the thread on the back, it should go fast. Since I intend to exchange this one(fingers crossed!) for the correct size, I haven’t removed the stitching & therefore cannot speak to the amount of flare to the skirt. Again- with only 8 pleats it’s bound to be fairly modest. My main issues are with construction & the care instructions. I’m not that thrilled with the elastic waist but I can see the benefit so I’ll let it slide- especially when/if I can exchange for one that isn’t too large. These types of pleated skirts always look sharper if there is top-stitching on the edges of the pleats & between them (between the waistband & top of the pleat) to keep the tops of the inset piece in place. There should also be some tacking, bar-stitching, backstitching or something at the tops of the pleats so they don’t come unstitched- as at least one of the pleats on this one was when I pulled it out of the bag. That’s how the old ones were made. Those could also cost twice this much 25, 30 years ago so one needs to adjust expectations. Additionally, a couple of the pleats seem to be slightly uneven in length. I’m planning on correcting that oversight of workmanship to the edges of the pleats. Top-stitching on a knitted fabric is nerve-wracking enough without having to hand tack the tops of the pleats on a brand new skirt to keep them from coming loose before I can even wear the thing so l’m knocking off half a star, which I think is generous considering that I’ll have to sew by machine & By hand. I’m not a fan of The fabric; it doesn’t have the same crisp look as old cheer skirts made of polyester double knit or even gabardine(which is more common for a tennis skirt). It’s close to double-knit or perhaps it’s what passes for it nowadays but it’s flimsier & seems slightly stretchier. There’s no real body to it so I’m knocking off half a star for the fabric. I’m hoping that I can give it some more body with sizing or starch but obviously I can’t make that gamble until I have the correct size. And a gamble it will be. Which brings me to my biggest gripe. When I pulled this out of the envelope, I was no more surprised to see wrinkles than I was by the temporary stitching at the hem. What DID take me by surprise however- besides the tiny snag in the fabric, that is- was after I pulled out the iron & ironing board and- out of force of habit more than anything else- looked at the care label and saw “Do Not Iron, Press or steam”?!?!? Are you freaking kidding me?!? It’s bad enough that this skirt is too big (which is on me) lacks any sharpness to the pleats or body to the fabric; How exactly do you suggest I get these infernal friggin’ creases out?!? There’s one in particular that is SO DEEP that I initially took it for a flaw- or should I say, another flaw- in the fabric. If I can’t get it out, then doesn’t that MAKE it a flaw? I was going to give it a quick press with some spray sizing to crisp it up a bit but I was afraid to iron it on my iron’s dedicated “polyester” setting with a pressing cloth or even to give it a quick steam with my steamer. It’s not as if there’s Lycra in the fabric to justify forbidding the use of an iron. It’s not as if polyester is some delicate fiber that requires special care- like wool, silk or even RAYON- either. There’s another label- behind the one listing care instructions more restrictive than a Wall Street scumbag’s parole. It has a date on it, presumably the manufacture date: 04/01/22. April Fools’ Day?! So, Does that mean this IS a joke & they ARE freaking kidding me? Given the number of issues- even for a modestly priced skirt- & every reasonable instinct I have to remedy half of them being shot down right out of the gate, the idea that it’s a joke makes a certain amount of sense. I’m not laughing, mind you but it IS kind of funny. I’ve lost track of how many stars I’m knocking off but anything less than three and I’ll talk myself right out of ordering the correct size and what good is a cheerleading SWEATER without the skirt? Exactly! This is meant to fit at the natural waist, not low on the waist. Unless you’re on the low end of plus size, Apple shaped or very bottom-heavy AND thick-waisted , don’t order the XL. If you’re between sizes like me, order down- especially if you’re an hourglass shape (like me) or pear shaped with a slim waist. ... show more

  • Don't worry about the white stitching on the skirt
Size: XX-Large Color: Red/Black
This skirt actually fits! It's comfy and it makes good material for a costume. If you see white stitching on the skirt when you first get it, don't panic! The stitching is just there to keep the pleats fresh. 😊 You'll need a small pair of scissors to cut the white stitches loose. I know this because I ordered a sailor uniform costume a few times from a Japanese site and they would do the exact same thing. ... show more

  • Bring It On!
Size: X-Large Color: Black/White
This cheer skirt fit just right, and delivery was efficient. The material is just like the traditional cheer skirt. I ordered an XL, as I’m a size 12 curvy in jeans. The white stitching will need to be removed from the bottom, to make the skirt flare. The price was descent as part of my Halloween costume. Many compliments, and sexy if you add a pair of heels, a whistle, poms, a bow, and a fine man to your side! ... show more

  • Love it!
Size: XX-Large Color: Black/White
I love everything about this skirt! It’s the real deal, yes you have to take the white stitching out but it’s totally worth it. I’m a dress size $20 and 5’2 the skirt fit as expected for a xxl. Also it’s not too short

  • For a small it’s also pretty big.
Size: Large Color: Black/Orange
I bought the black and orange skirt for a cosplay and the orange ended up looking more red than orange, and it was strangely sewed together with white string. I ended up cutting off the white string, releasing the pleats because it held it together strange and it didn’t achieve the look I wanted with the white sewing in. For a small it’s also pretty big. ... show more

Size: X-Large Color: Black/White
I love it!!! Have always been searching for a cute box pleat cheer skirt just for fun and this skirt is simply amazing. Great quality, I am a US10/AU12 and XL fits perfect (: A bit tedious to cut out the bottom sewing but no big deal. Wish it was slightly longer but it's okay! Shipping to Australia was fast! Took less than a month. ... show more

  • Super cute skirt
I love the box pleat, and wear this dress casually, not for cheer. It looks really cute with a black sweater or t-shirt.
