  • Is everyone drinking the Kool-Aid???
Color: Black
I could detect no improvement using this on my 2018 Mackbook Air with Grado SR-80's. You can get higher volume but that's about it. I tried lossless files. It's hard to believe the claims of a night/day difference. Are people listening with their ears or their minds? Convinced that they have "Golden Ears" and can hear minute differences that are beyond the reach of normal, mortal humans? I consider myself a discerning listener. I'm a Classical Music buff and like to have the best masters of my favorite music. I can hear differences between bit rates (128 vs. 320 kpbs). But this has to be the biggest delusion yet created by the audiophile world, right up there with $1,000 cables that will supposedly turn any music into sparkling diamonds. Perhaps at a higher price point there is indeed a difference between DACs. But this particular item does virtually nothing. Didn't bother to try it on my iPhone as I didn't want to shell out for a lightning adapter before knowing what I was getting into. I did try it with an Android and couldn't get any audio to come out. There are compatibility issues with certain phones (I have a Moto). Good luck! ... show more

  • Pick Black, Red is unjustifiably expensive
Color: Black
Since there are plenty of reviews addressing various aspects of sound quality, I'll just try to help those who can't decide between the Black and Red. I own both Black and Red for a few months now, and I listen to both regularly, about 10 hours a week. I can't tell the difference despite listening to each through one of the best set of headphones. Black is great, and knowing what I know now, I would only buy another black model. I see no reason whatsoever to pay extra for an imperceptible difference. ... show more

  • Changed my life....
Color: Black
So I mainly for this DAC for it's MQA decoding capabilities, the headphone pre-amp, amp, and compatibility with smart phones were all bonuses. I mainly listen to most of my music from Tidal, I have a few high end headphones and never thought this DAC would make that much of a difference. Boy was I wrong. As soon as I updated it so I could listen to MQA tracks I sat down in my computer room, turned the lights off, lit a few candles, poured myself some wine, picked my song of choice and then pressed play. And then it happened, there I was floating in space.... Suspended in time. I started to cry, i felt every moment of sadness, pain, happiness, anger, sorrow all at once. It was there I knew, I was no longer a mortal man, I had been kissed by angels, my ears would never been the same. Now bound by spirit, machine, and man. I then awoke from trance now a changed man. ... show more

  • good but I like my Dragonfly Red better and this is going back
Color: Cobalt
I was excited to see that Audioquest had come out with another USB DAC/amp in the vein of the dragonfly red and black. I absolutely love my Audioquest Dragonfly red (DFR) - I use it almost daily as it is plugged into my work laptop and drives my Final Audio Sonorous IV headphones at work. I was hoping for more of the DFR's airiness and tasteful sparkling treble but alas that was not the case with the cobalt. The cobalt is distincly less airy, more tightened up to where you can definitely hear separation of instruments a hair better. I'll tell you upfront that I prefer a more distinct U curve in my EQ settings and the DFR red does a better approximation of that. to my ears, the DFR sounds more fun than the cobalt. My reccomendation to you is to try it for yourself. for the third time, I've found that I need to listen to a product myself since I have not found alignment with what reviewers say is better. Go with what YOU think sounds better. to that extent, you would almost have to make sure you compare both. In general the cobalt sounds like the DFR to my ears with less treble. ... show more

  • Great Upgrade that won't break the bank
Color: Black
I have a Schiit Fulla 2 that I use with my Macbook but I needed something smaller that will connect to my iPhone and Audioquest's Dragonfly Black didn't disappoint. For people who've invested a good amount of money on their headphones, this a welcome upgrade to the sound you get from you're headphones. You will need a lightning to USB adapter if you plan to use this with an iPhone. As with any external DAC, your results may vary depending on your headphones. I tried these on the headphones I own( Oppo PM3, ATH-50x, Senheisser HD558 and my newest cans the Sony MDR 1A) the sound from the iPhone is better with the Sony MDR 1A being the fun headphone becuase it's more forgiving than the Oppo and AudioTechnica on bad recordings or lower bit recordings. ... show more
