Description

The Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is a 5" on-camera monitor/recorder that records and plays back DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video from purpose-built mini-SSDs. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remaining unaltered.Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja V features an aluminum chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A power supply and SSD Caddy are included with the unit. • Best kit for the value!
I recently put together a budget for a new filming rig, including an off-camera monitor and recorder. After pricing out several Ninja V options (including getting a similar kit piecemeal), this was the best value for the investment. The Ninja V is only 5” compared to its 7” sibling, which is perfect for keeping things compact on a run-and-gun rig. Plus it’s able to record 4K at 60fps in 10 bit 4:2:2, which is necessary for using my GH5s to its fullest. The batteries are a must! And are a high mAh rating which means one battery alone will last for hours. The extension arm is a little too small for my setup. However it may come in handy for other peripherals, or to keep for a small stow and go rig, or a mobile phone setup using the included handheld camera stabilizer - which is how I use mine. Speaking of which - the stabilizer is, well...cute. It’s small and lightweight, and decent if you want an option to get your hands off the camera body. But the base is plastic and construction feels kinda cheap. Still, it’s good as a mobile phone handheld rig. If you’re going with this kit, there are three caveats you should know: 1.) HDMI connections are not included. That’s okay, because you specifically need an HDMI 2.0 cable to get the full 4K@60fps; Atomos’ 2.0 cable costa around $100, whereas I bought a ‘generic’ one for $10. 2.) It will need a firmware update (as of this review the most recent version is 10.1). 3.) You will need an SSD dock so you can update the firmware. This is one of the rare times I recommend getting the name-brand/ Atomos docking station, because I’ve experienced firsthand when an SSD to USBc goes bad during transfer: Corrupted video files which cannot be salvaged. Overall, great kit for the price. ... show more

  • Nikon Z6's best friend
Okay, it takes a little getting used to but once you find your way around, this is the best thing that you can do for production with a Z6. Yes, there is no LUT for the Z6 yet but there is a very good one to be you starting point and you should be able to grade wonderfully from there or on your own if you know what you are doing. I didn't like the coil cable that Atomos tries to get you to purchase and there are much (better in my opinion) lighter cables out there that do not throw off the weight and balance if you are using mechanical stabilization. Atomos and Nikon are hinting at improvements in the future but even as it stands it's one terrific setup. I have heard complaints about fan noise but that has not been my experience and I am assuming that it must have been on an earlier or pre-release model as my unit is very quiet. If you are shooting with a Z6, this is a must have. The accessory kit is quite nice and by far the best part is the batteries that come with the kit. They are fantastic and run for quite a long time before having to switch them out. All in all, this is the best value in a Atomos Ninja V kit and Fumfie is a great company to deal with. I had a missing part in my order and they went above and beyond to get it to me. ... show more

  • Excellent product but for the noise
I hate so much that I had to return this magnificent piece of equipment. The issue I had with it was fan noise. I'm a one man band so I have to record audio from right beside the camera and I just couldn't find a way to get the mic far enough from the ninja to get crisp audio. If you don't have to worry about audio or have someone who could help record independent of the camera rig then get this immediately. That is if you can afford it. The tools you get with this are professional level and recording in prores is so much easier on your NLEs. This is the best tool a mirrorless or dslr could have and a must have to professional level shooting. ... show more

  • Ninja Great! Batteries and accessories bad
Ninja is wonderful...will buy again. The batteries are a complete 0; got 2 cycles out of one battery and 2nd battery only last 20-30 mins. The other accessories are honestly a waste of materials and cheaply made. So all in all, the Ninja is a wonderful tool for film makers but forget the other items in this kit. ... show more

  • The unit was defective
I got it to work but there were too many annoying bugs. Zebras only worked when monitor was in rec. 709 mode, among other annoyances. Returned

  • Fantastic Product and Price.
I've been a long time fan of Atomos and their products and was super excited when they announced this new 5" recorder. With our current line up of Sony cameras ( A7SII + FS7II ), they work seamless between both and provide us a beautiful image and quick workflow.
