  • This thing is amazing
A few things to mention about this amazing tool, but first a little about me. I have been in the live events industry on the production side of things for over 20 years. So, I have had my hands on several different types of recording devices. Atomos builds some pretty awesome products that WORK WELL. They do run a little hot, but they don't seem to overheat and shut down. I have run them for a full days of recordings and they just work. I know one user complained about the apple pro res codec being an issue for windows users. Well, apparently what he didn't know is that you can download the needed codec. If you have a PC, just download VLC player, it's free, and you will have no issues playing the final video. I purchased this just a couple of weeks ago for one of my businesses photographing houses. I find with just my camera I would have a hard time in direct sunlight seeing my image on the camera display. Obviously, you can tell in the picture that I have zero issues in direct sun with this monitor. In fact, I am liking this so much, I am buying a second bundle for another one of my businesses. These things are great tools and will be a work horse for you. Some of the things in the bundle are junk, but overall you are getting your moneys worth. Keep in mind that it does not come with a hard drive. What is supplied that looks like a hard drive, is the enclosure for the hard drive to mount inside of, so you can connect it to the Ninja. Also, if you are going to use it like I am, you will want to order a separate hot shoe adapter for your camera as the one included in the bundle is cheap. Overall though, with the two batteries and the cables and some other contents, it's well worth it. ... show more

  • Outstanding Addition to Mirrorless Cameras for 10-bit, 12-bit, and RAW
I specifically got this for a Nikon Z6 based on our experience with another Ninja V. This is a combination monitor and recorder. It enables you to record 10-bit, 12-bit, or full RAW via HDMI on a number of cameras (12-bit and RAW on a Nikon Z6/Z7, both with record 10-bit native). You can record in Prores in a number of different compressions, .709 compliant, log or linear, and apply LUTS. Additionally, you can add focus peaking and exposure peaking (one or the other or both). Combined with the exposure curves on the display of the Nikon Z6, getting the proper exposure and being sure you're in focus is a snap. We use 500GB WD Blue SSD drives without issue to record on. The Ninja V supports Sony batteries and battery life is excellent. The screen is bright, even in intense sunlight and operates without issue. The only downside is there is a cooling fan. It will add to room tone as will any noise. If you're using the camera mic or have the shotgun mic very close to the Ninja, you'll pick up some noise. If you're using lavs, a boom, or have the shotgun mic on 15mm rods away from the Ninja V there is no issue. You can use the screen for playback also, and some editing. It can do time stamps, sync and non-sync audio and you can adjust the frames to sync audio if needed. We have found there is s 7 frame difference when we use a mixer and connect through the analog jack on the Ninja V. If you want to be serious about video, but don't have a Cine camera budget, or you've already invested in mirrorless cameras and want added functionality, this is a no brainer. Up to 60FPS 4K in Prores HD .709 compliant. Boom! (60FPS max is based upon the performance of the camera, the Nikon Z6 only supports up to 30FPS) If you're starting from scratch, by the time you add up a body, lens, Ninja V, battery, hard drive, and the accessories to connect it all properly (Smallrig cage, cables, guides) check the math - you may be to an entry level cine camera at that point. ... show more

  • WINDOWS AND DA VINCI RESOLVE USERS - READ THIS BEFORE BUYING
For its price, this is a great field monitor with a lot of features. The problem - and it's a big one - is that the Ninja outputs its footage in ProRes Raw format. For those of us who own a Windows computer, you'll find that you'll be completely out of luck trying to find a media player besides Premiere Pro's editing program that will play this codec. I shoot a lot of footage and I sort through it until I decide which files I want to import into Premiere. I've tweaked and downloaded one Windows media player after another as well as k-lyte codec packs and none of them can decode ProRes. If you're a DaVinci Resolve user, you'll find that Resolve doesn't work with ProRes raw footage at all and it'll be unusable as far as an editing program. I've written to Atomos re: these concerns, and their response is basically "sorry" and they just shrug their shoulders. Although the codec was originally created by the greedy folks at Apple, I blame Atomos for choosing this codec for the Ninja without doing any research in advance to learn how limited it would be for Windows and DaVinci Resolve users. They should also post a disclaimer when they advertise the Ninja that it's geared mostly to Mac users. I recommend waiting until Atomos is responsible enough to add a common codec to the Ninja that everyone has access to. I wish I'd saved my money, I had no idea I was going to have so many problems being able to play its footage. ... show more

  • Great monitor. Purchase with accessories.
Great product as most people have described. If you are thinking about purchasing the Atomos Ninja V, do yourself a favor and buy from SSE Photo & Video with additional accessories. Most are selling the Ninja V by itself for $599. But I paid that price for the Ninja V, plus a large box full of very useful accessories to include 2 extended batteries with charger, carrying case, multiple hdmi cables and much more. I only wish that I had purchased this sooner because I would have saved money on some of the hdmi cables for my cameras. FYI, I am not affiliated with this company. ... show more

  • Outstanding Customer service
HDMI signal did not come through from camera to Ninja V. Contacted customer service. A few emails later, after they made sure my camera settings were correct, It was suggested I change the HDMI setting on the Ninja from 2.0 to 1.4. This did the trick and the Ninja V was functional. I was impressed with their willingness to help me with my camera settings, something clearly not the responsibility of Atomos. Very knowledgeable help. Would buy from them again. ... show more
