Second monitor that is as portable as a laptop

This thing has been a life saver. I got recommended getting one of these from a student in the Computer Science department at my university when I told him I was struggling keeping up in the labs because of all the switching between documents and programs required. It's a little glossy and attracts fingerprints like an iPhone given to a kid, but the screen is sharp and clear. I like it using the USB-C cable as my laptop has one USB-C port that I use for nothing and leaves the limited number of USB-A ports free for other devices. It is also thin enough to comfortably fit in the laptop holder of my pack along side my laptop without deforming or forcing anything. That doesn't mean it is perfect. There are a few things that could be improved. First the cable could be about 6 inches longer. The laptop I use with this monitor is an ASUS 2 in 1 15.6in. The USB-C port on this laptop is on the right side and the USB-C port on this monitor is on the left. This means there will always be a gap of about 4 inches between the two if the monitor is on the right side. This I actually don't have a problem with. It feels natural to have a couple inches of space in this configuration. The problem comes when you try to swing the monitor over to the left side of the laptop. Even with the monitor right up on the side of the laptop there is no slack in the cable. This leads you to either rotating the monitor to get slack or position the monitor in such a way that part of it is behind your monitor. I wouldn't normally grip about this (and to be honest It's kind of splitting hairs) but since both this monitor and my laptop are built by ASUS you would think someone would have asked if the cable was long enough to use the monitor on the right side. A simple pass through on the right side of the monitor would have also solved this problem but that would add additional cost. Second, auto-rotation either is flaky, a conflict with Windows 10 or is broke on my device. I got it to auto-rotate once but the second time it didn't do it. Not a big issue and honestly I believe it's a Windows 10 issue and not with the device. Third not ink or touch capable. Ok, so this is more of a wish (well maybe not the touch because fingerprints) but I was a little disappointed that my Bamboo Ink didn't work on it though it works on my laptop. Didn't really surprise me as Ink is fairly new technology but I really wish it did have it. I will be watching to see if/when one comes out and will probably upgrade to it at that time. TL:DR If you need a second monitor for a laptop this one works extremely well but you might find the cable a little short in certain configurations. ... show more

Awesome product for coffee shop workers

I don't buy a lot of products that exceed my expectations, but this one certainly has. It is amazingly lightweight, offers crystal clear text and images, and is very quick and easy to set up in coffee shops and similar places. It connects to a laptop via a single USB-C port and boots up in seconds. Windows immediately recognizes it as an external display with no fiddling of settings. Contrary to the documentation, with displaylink adapters you can plug this into ports which do not supply video and it works! You get a warning message briefly pop up, but I've had zero issues doing this. I even watched Netflix on this with it plugged into a USB-3 port (with a USB-C to USB-3 adapter) which did not offer video-over-USB, and the video was smooth. The use of a pen as a kickstand is an interesting decision, but in practice it actually works well. The display itself is not very bright so not sure in an overly lit room how well this will work. But for people looking for a portable second display I have never seen a better product at any price point. You can set your laptop and this down on a table and within 10 seconds have a multi-monitor setup anywhere. Very cool. One tip: The Lacdo 14-15 inch laptop carrying bag is a great accompaniment to this. It is just big enough to hold this, while being just wide enough to fit a slim laptop as well. I use that bag to carry my Lenovo Yoga 720 13" laptop along with this monitor. Works great. ... show more

Excellent portable montior

I've had several mobile monitors that utilize DisplayLink over the years, this is my fourth so far. In the past, I started with the 14inch Lenovo LT1421, I went to 15.6 inch HP, then finally to the 14 inch HP S140u before moving to the ZenScreen. Each had their upsides but all had basically the same downside, resolution and color quality. For comparison the only one fair to benchmark the ASUS ZenScreen against (from what I've used) is the HP S140u as that is still available for sale by HP. The ZenScreen is worlds better. First off, with such thin bezels on 3 sides of the ZenScreen, you get 15.6 inches of screen instead of 14 inches of screen for almost the same total size, a huge plus. Secondly, the ZenScreen actually fits better in my bag even though it is marginally bigger overall; it is very thin for being a monitor and most important to me is the thickness is consistent across the unit. The HP had a rounded back that made it less convenient to have in my laptop bag and created a strange "bulge" when all packed up. That, plus the ZenScreen is just a bit lighter, was a win on its own. The most important factors here though are resolution and color quality. The resolution is full 1080p which is far better than what I've used in the past. There is no resizing of documents etc when you drag something over from your primary laptop monitor (granted their may be a little bit depending on the resolution of your laptop but at 1080p this is very minimal and hardly noticeable from other models, such as the HP S140u I've dealt with). I realize ASUS has other screens with 1080p but their stands before the ZenScreen are so ridiculous and non-user friendly, I always avoided them. On that point, the stand on this screen is pretty smart. Some point this out as a flaw but honestly in the mobile monitor space, no one has a perfect solution (the S140u wasn't bad as it had a similar concept, but still I think ZenScreen is superior). The stand is effectively the case that wraps around the unit and with a few simple folds, strong magnets hold it in place as a stand. There are two degree's you can have it at (at least, with the fold option I prefer - I guess there are a couple in the instructions only one of which I remember) and they seem to be all I need (I really only change the angle if I am experiencing glare); Oh, and you can also use a pen if you prefer to prop this up - I've yet to use this as the case is so quick and effective to fold, but an option none the less. As for color quality, I am not an expert on the levels etc but this screen, although the colors are a little different from my laptop, are the best I've experienced in a mobile monitor; there are settings you can play with native to the screen that allow you to adjust certain aspects which was key in getting the colors to line up pretty well. Again, not perfect compared to my laptop monitor but close enough where after the first week of using it, I didn't even noticed anymore. All in all, this monitor is easily worth the $250. In my experience, it is the best I've used and I'll use it until something eventually is more sophisticated, but I suspect this won't be for a while as this screen (compared to others I've used) seems ahead of the game. ... show more

A Road-Coder's Delight... Perfect mate to a MacBook Pro for getting low-overhead second screen joy.

I'm a software engineer who travels about 25-50% of the time for work. Mainly, I code apps and websites and as such, I almost always prefer to work with multiple screens. My primary work laptop is a 2018 MacBook Pro 15 and my sidecar "hobby" machine is a 12.5" Asus Chromebook C302 that I absolutely adore (seriously, see my review of it). At home and work I have a plethora of displays setup on my workstations to service both of these machines and over the years I've become used to being able to "spread" my work out... Communications and productivity apps on one screen, code editor and output browser/simulators on another and one just dedicated to debug terminals and consoles. It really is workflow bliss... And then I got the new gig... Traveling 1-2weeks out of the month, living in hotels... trains, planes and automobiles... pop-up meetings in restaurants/coffeeshops/conferences. Suddenly my workflow bliss started feeling like a single-desktop pile-on. It's not that I need to drag several 30" displays on the road with me... just some more breathing room. And then a friend told me about this line of ASUS monitors that sounded way too good to be true... So, I picked one up just to see if it could give me the breathing room I needed w/o the inconvenience of hauling around an external display, power brick and connection cables. Happy to say, this device hits all 5-stars at a price that's comparable to a low-end desktop monitor. It has the same footprint as my 15" MBP and slips in right next to it in my bag w/o a fuss. Yeah, it adds a little extra weight to my bag, but no more than a hefty USB battery brick or extra Apple MBP wall charger. For me, the big-win is that it does everything over a single USB-C cable, data, image, and power... just magic. Pros: - Light weight and low-overhead, just need the device and a USB-C cable that's DisplayPort-over-USB certified - Same footprint as a 15" MacBook Pro - Great resolution and color - Power and image over USB-C, no need for a power-brick - Easy to use adjustment settings directly on the device - Sturdy and low-profile magnetic cover very similar to the covers you can get for Android tablets and iPads - Solid metal/plastic construction Cons: - Doesn't have the ability to auto-rotate on MacOS - No USB-C pass-thru... it eats a whole port, so have a port-expander dongle with power pass-thru for your other port - Doesn't support HDMI input on the device (I've heard you can get an HDMI-to-USB-C DisplayPort adaptor, but I've yet to source one/try it, would love to have for on-the-road console gaming) - Hard to find replacement USB-C data cables that support DisplayPort over USB-C I've been using this for about 2 months now and it's been a worthwhile travel companion... I even crack it out at the home office on occasion to mirror my screen for small 2-3 person group demos/presentations. I haven't tried gaming on it, but video playback and color matching to my MBP screen are great. ... show more

Brightness level works outside in shade, does rotate on Mac, leave USB cable plugged in

I have been using this monitor for three weeks now. I have used it with both USB A and C cables and it works very well! The brightness is a bit on the lower side when using it outside, but manageable in shade outdoors. It won't work in direct bright sunlight. As for rotation on Mac, press Cmd + Option, a new rotate menu will appear in the display preferences _on the new monitor_. Rotate it there and you're go to go. Agreed that it's not as convenient as auto-rotate, but you do get a rotation capability, which I believe is invaluable. A lot of reviews talk about the display port breaking. Well, my solution to that is to leave that end of the cable plugged in :). Agreed that this may not work for travel, but I don't intend to travel with this monitor. I researched portable monitors extensively and found this one to be the most suitable for me due to rotation, portability, display quality, and price. ... show more

Perfect companion to SB4

Aside from the absolutely simple plug-it-in-and-it-works simplicity, it's a brilliantly bright, clear, crisp and super portable screen. My entire office consists of and SB4 (i7), this screen, a Logitech K780 and a Logitech M585 mouse. Super simple to adjust brightness and night mode with a couple of buttons on the front. The size is exceptional as well, especially when using spreadsheets as it's virtually Legal size. The adjustable stand is not only a cinch to use, but can be configured to multiple positions: nearly flat (like the SP), to normal viewing angle (about 45 degrees) to very erect (about 20 degrees) to even portrait. As a business guy continually on the road, airports, trains, and ferries, I don't mind schlepping this lot around as it's so very light and quick to setup. The fact that I don't have to take yet another power adapter as it plugs directly into the USB port on the SB, man...I really love it. And a note on that front: This monitor draws its power from the SB. I was concerned that I'd see the battery rapidly go flat. Not the case here. I kinda forget that it's using SB power and (I've not measured) but it goes for maybe 4 hours? 6 hours? I'm probably wrong here, but the point is I don't have range anxiety. I can--and do--take the SB with this screen AND NO POWER ADAPTER AT ALL and sit for hours in a library just working away. I'm usually done working by the time the SB warns me that I'm nearly out of gas. It's like my Garmin Vivoactive 3 watch: I never even thing about charging it. Thoroughly satisfied with this. I'm now trying to figure out how to attach two of these to the SB. It can be done, but not sure about the contraptions required to do so...more when I find out. ... show more

Great Portable Monitor

The cover/stand works great once you have it on correctly

Reading reviews I was worried about the cover/stand being bad. I quickly realized what people were describing the first time I put it on. The magnets line up enough when it's on backwards to nearly function, but function poorly. Flipping the cover around solved it completely, the magnets are strong, line up extremely well and stay in place in a variety of positions. If that's a concern, ignore the other reviews, it was user error. I'm a software engineer who works remotely, so sometimes I'm at a kitchen table, a normal desk, a recliner/rocking chair, a hammock, a boat, etc... This monitor is great in every place except the hammock since there's no real good position to keep the laptop and extra monitor... not a fault of the monitor obviously. Color and clarity is great for software engineering, web browsing, and general use like that. I could see if you were doing a lot of graphic intense gaming, it might not be good, but I even run my google hangout and Zoom video conference meetings on that screen, while running IntelliJ, 30+ Chrome Tabs, Slack, Jetty, and a few Docker images. For my purposes of video conferences and googling solutions for development, it works great. It's not quite as bright as my macbook pro's retina screen, but it's sufficient for development purposes. Angle of view is pretty good too, I can turn it to nearly 180º and to show someone something and still see enough of what's on the screen to point things out. It does get darker when you do that, but it's no worse than the macbook's screen I'm extremely happy overall with this screen. I also have a 22" on an Uplift Desk, but find myself liking the mobility this screen gives me. On my older MacBook Pro (13" from 2015) I did have to download and install a driver to make it work using their USB to USB-C adapter that came with it, but on my newer MBP (15" from 2017) it worked right away using one of the built in USB-C ports. ... show more
