  • Painless!
Installed the card and cables (USB2 and Thunderbolt header cable), powered up the system and everything worked as expected...awesome! Motherboard is an ASUS Prime Z890-P WiFi with Intel Core Ultra 7 265K. The only way it could have been simpler and faster would have been for me not to already have a Black Magic Design Decklink Mini 4K display card in the PCIeEX16(G4)_3 slot, which I had to relocate to the PCIeEX16(G4)_2 slot and while I was at it, I also relocated a USB connector plate for the MB USB-C and USB-A headers that was between slots PCIe slots 2 and 3 to an open rear panel slot on the far side of my RTX3090. I did not hook up the PCIe 6-pin power feed for the time being as I'm not powering anything substantial off the TB Ports for now. The built-in MB port and one of the adapter ports are both feeding TB Hubs (1 TB5 and one TB4) where I connect various USB-C 3.2 Gen2 (10 and 20Gbs devices) for now. Both support USB-C Gen 4, as well. I was surprised that there were three DP to USB-C cables included in the package, though I'm not currently usiing them. Very pleased this all just worked after installing! ... show more

  • Unmet Promises with Severe Bandwidth Limitations
Not a complete Thunderbolt 5 implementation by a long shot. What they fail to mention is the card is severely limited by the PCIe 4.0 x4 bandwidth. Also, lots of undocumented setup required to get this to work at all. Required both a card firmware update via an EFI Shell script, as well as another Power Delivery Driver update to approved motherboards. Not a big deal if you are somewhat experienced builder, with experience working with BIOS/CMOS and EFI Shells. But I could see this being daunting to a casual user. The biggest disappointment was the limited bandwidth available to the card, via the PCIe 4.0 connection. You are not getting anywhere near TBT5 capabilities. Two monitors (neither is 4k) connected through a Thunderbolt hub (Plugable TBT4-UBZ) completely saturated all available bandwidth of the Thunderbolt connection. This effectively killed all video to the second monitor (although it was still detected) and all USB connections became essentially useless due to extreme lag. Using one monitor, everything worked without issue. Again, these are not two 4k monitors. One is an Ultrawide 3840 x 1600 and the other 2560 x 1440. With DSC (Digital Stream Compression), this is about a 36Gbps connection. Well within Thunderbolt 4/5 limits. And, as I said, this same setup runs without any issues with the same system using the integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller. As a side note, the ThunderboltEX 5 card Thunderbolt controller was never explicitly recognized by Windows 11 in Device Manager. Rather it was seen as Microsoft USB4 (TM) Host Router. But I think this is more a Windows 11 issue, than it is with the card. I see the same behavior with the integrated TBT4 controller that works without issues. After two days of trying everything to resolve the saturated bandwidth issues, I've decided to send this back. I miss my seamless Apple Thunderbolt implementations. Asus solutions have all come with compromises and gotchas. Even the integrated solution limits my RTX 4090 simply because Asus doesn't provide a DP-in on the motherboard for the integrated Thunderbolt controller, making it completely reliant on having an iGPU running to use my discrete GPU on the integrated controller. ... show more

  • Be sure to understand specifications.
My fault for the three stars. I thought it would work with my AMD Asus motherboard. It does not. Just be careful with all necessary specs before buying. It does look well made but who knows since I could not test it. Again my fault. It does install easily in the PCI slot.

  • If you are wondering...
I bought this because I need thunderbolt port, and I really want to have a new generation of thunderbolt card. If you are questioning if it is suitable to your "not the latest motherboard" you can find the compatible motherboard on ASUS website and compare it with your motherboard. However, if you want a more brief answer, I am here to tell you that it is functional with my not so old generation (Z790-E ASUS rog strix); it was not on the list of compatible motherboard. ASUS brand might have to update their compatible list. I need a little tweak in my BIOS in order to install the card correctly to use. It does have fast charging if you have a separate 6-pins PSU cable ( it is not included in the package). Overall, I would say it is good with its price; not so expensive. ... show more

  • Failed Product
Doesn't work at all. The drivers load, but the device still is unknown. Thunderbolt is such a mess and I'm shocked at how little support there is. I needed a thunderbolt port for a specific device. Now I want to return all of it it's such a pain.
