Let me preface this by saying I’ve never written a review longer than a haiku, but the ASUS 27” 4K Eye Care Monitor (VY27UQ) deserves a literal standing ovation—and since I sit for 14 hours a day, that’s saying something. I bought this because my previous monitor was about as vibrant as a DMV waiting room. When I upgraded to this majestic beast of pixels, it was like removing a film from my eyeballs that had been there since 2002. I loaded up a 4K wallpaper of a mountain range and I’m pretty sure a hawk flew out of the screen and nested on my ceiling. That’s how real it looks. Let’s break this beauty down: UHD 3840 x 2160: This isn’t just Ultra High Definition. This is Ultra Holy-Cow-I-Can-Count-The-Pores-On-This-YouTuber’s-Nose Definition. IPS Panel: The colors are so consistent from every angle that I now invite guests over just to sit beside me and whisper, “Look at the reds, Brad. Just LOOK at them.” HDR10: I watched a documentary about mushrooms and the spores basically levitated out of the screen. It’s like being part of a planetarium exhibit that cost $249 and came with free shipping. Adaptive Sync: My games no longer tear like emotionally unstable relationships. I play, it adapts. I cry a little. Not out of lag, but out of joy. Eye Care Plus / Blue Light Filter / Flicker Free: My eyes used to dry out faster than hotel shampoo. Now? They’re practically spa-treated. I stare at this monitor for hours and my retinas send me thank-you notes. Built-in speakers: Are they audiophile grade? No. But will they save your butt during a Zoom call when your headphones are tangled in a knot made by a spiteful ghost? Absolutely. DisplayWidget: I didn’t even know I needed this until I started using it. Now I adjust brightness and color like I’m piloting the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. 3-Year Warranty: I’ve had shorter romantic relationships than this warranty. ASUS believes in this monitor more than I believe in finishing my laundry. Let’s be real: For $249, this is probably the best thing I’ve ever bought that didn’t require monthly payments, a therapist’s approval, or a permission slip from my significant other. I now gaze lovingly at this screen even when it's off. My productivity is up, my gaming has improved, and I’m pretty sure I look slightly cooler just sitting next to it. My cat has started sleeping in front of it like it’s a tiny sun. Final thoughts: If you need a monitor, this is it. If you don’t need a monitor, you’re wrong. Buy it. Mount it. Bask in it. Great monitor! I use a MacBook Pro for graduate school and sometimes get tired of looking a the small screen. Someone gave me a monitor to use with it, which was great, but I realized an additional monitor would make things even better. I purchased this monitor for doing school coursework (connected with USB-C), so I am unable to speak on its gaming capability. When I compare it with my other monitor (Samsung), I think the graphics and picture quality are much better on this ASUS, especially for the price point.
