I was devastated but I hoped that throwing it in the washer 3 or 4 times on high temperature and spin would do the trick. It did AND there were no problems at all. Came out very clean and soft. I read all the reviews on this breaking up in the washer or burning in the dryer. I recommend you don't get this if you have a small washer, mine is not heavy duty by any means but it can fit this comforter in a single load. I have a memory foam mattress that makes me sweat no matter what sheets I use. I'm injured in several places and putting on fitted sheets is no fun. This comforter is nicely weighted and just flows on top of mattress. It stays in place and nice to lie on
