I made my purchase of the Arturia MiniFreak around a year ago and it's one of the best purchases for the value I've ever made. Also, consider I got the unit for the amazing price of 464 USD instead of 600 USD which makes it a total bargain, but it is well worth the 600 USD price tag. For context, I have been a guitarist for the past 14 years and recently got interested in sound design, so I know a fair bit about music and quality instruments. I wanted a unit that was inexpensive and covers all bases for a person whose main instrument is not synths/keys. As a complete beginner to sound design, the learning curve is not as steep as I expected and this little instrument packs a serious punch. It includes 256 and there are over 100 more presets available in the MiniFreak V software. Also, learning the basics and controls took a bit of getting used to, but I think I picked up on it quickly. If you are a person who is interested in sound design, don't want to break the bank, and wants a solid selection of synth sounds to tweak and design your own then this is the synth for you. I have spent countless hours playing with it and creating soundscapes I didn't think possible. The keys are comfortable (even though not perfect) and the amount of keys is very fair and I didn't feel too limited without a full 5 octaves available at once. Even after a year I feel like I've barely scratched the surface on the arpeggiator and sequencer, both of which are very deep but not too complex. The knobs feel intuitive and responsive and the sound is magnificent. Also I did unwillingly drop my unit on concrete with medium force and thought it was going to be damaged, but surprisingly it was still working well, even though the knobs got scratched and the metal got a bit scratched and lightly bent. It has some impressive build quality, since it stayed fully functional even after my unfortunate accident. This synth also gets constant software updates that make meaningful upgrades to the base functionality. I was wishing it had a vocoder and Arturia dropped a vocoder update out of the blue! Now I use it with a gooseneck mic for an even wider range of available sounds. I've played some gigs with it and had no problems so far, it's really built to last and it is not too heavy to carry. There are some cons that could keep this from being a 5 star purchase, but the price point and versatility are enough for it to be fully recommended. I think the screen and UI could be a bit more descriptive and bigger, such as in the MiniFreak V version of the UI. Also, the capacitive buttons are not as responsive as I'd like, and it is easy to mispress them or double press them as a mistake. I've gotten used to it but it's important to keep in mind if a song in a gig depends on a sequence being turned on at the right time. Some features felt a bit hidden as I wouldn't have discovered them without watching deep dives on youtube or some heavy reading on the user manual. I don't know how it holds up with other synths in comparison, but since I'm new to the instrument and sound design, this was a noticeable step up in complexity for me. Nothing too crazy though. I am excited to see which new ideas Arturia comes up with in the future. All around a great purchase.

This massively popular synth has only been available for about half a year, but the staggering number of praise-filled reviews, aftermarket preset packs, and general community support should give you an idea of how successful this versatile little synth is. Youtube videos run through the default factory presets, and provide tips and tricks for optimizing your time with this gem. The multi-mode synthesis engine covers just about every method imaginable and the oscillators, analog multimode filters, and generous effects section provide true high-quality sounds of all kinds. Each of the 256 preset slots can include its own user-programmed sound patch AND polyphonic sequence or arpeggio setup. Plenty of smooth, precise knobs to control variables in real time, and a flexible matrix assignment system for managing signal routing make this a great synth for beginners or experienced users alike. True six-voice polyphony with user-selectable note-re-triggering and voice-allocation modes allow for lots of flexibility and can emulate modes from conventional monosynths to various polysynths like the original Oberheim 2- 4- and 8- voice. (Well, no, not 8-voices at once, but the same kind of note assignments!) The compact keyboard is velocity sensitive with monophonic pressure aftertouch, and provides a sturdy predictable keybed. The metal chassis construction is ventilated to prevent heat build-up, while providing a feeling if solid construction. Arturia also provides free access to the MiniFreak V when you register online, which is a very faithful virtual instrument (standalone and plugin) that runs on a PC or Mac and to me sounds exactly like the hardware version. This allows for multiple instances of the MiniFreak simultaneously, limited only by your computer’s processing power. It also can be setup to track in realtime all the knobs and settings of a connected hardware MiniFreak. You can work on developing patches or sequences on the virtual version, then transfer them to the hardware unit once it is connected. You can also use the virtual version to save patches and sequences from the hardware unit to hard disk. The 1 -to-1 mapping of the hardware controls makes for a very unique experience when working with the virtual version in a DAW… I can confirm that everything works as it should in Propellerhead’s Reason v12. It’s not quite as powerful or well laid out as Arturia’s flagship softsynth, Pigments, but it’s close, with similar high quality sounds, and a few strengths of its own. Now, I’d love to see Arturia release a hardware version of Pigments!

I've been looking to get back into synths for the longest time, back in the days I had my dx-7, s-900, Korg 800, and a bunch of other stuff chaotically chained together on my 80's keyboard rack. This little Minifreak covers all of the above times 1000, it is absolutely amazing. The keyboard is tight, very responsive and has a good feel to it, the velocity is spot on, and EVERYTHING can be modded and tweaked. It's plug and play out of the box, the sounds are astronomically brilliant, and they are plentiful. The included Minifreak V software package is a great bonus! I have absolutely no hesitations recommending it. you'll love it!

Arturia makes very solid devices and this is no exception. It doesn't feel like a cheap device. It feels great to play, although the keys are small. It feels like a very immediate synth, you can really spend hours creating new sounds. For the amount of features it has, the price is great and the size feels very portable without being too small.
