Description

Cold salt waves beat on the New England coast and thick fog rolls in off the bay, obscuring the small fishing hamlets that nestle in the darkness. Dark things creep along the shoreline, strange lights glide deep beneath the surface of the Atlantic, and the pallid villagers go missing with disturbing regularity. Under Dark Waves is a new large box expansion for Arkham Horror, taking your investigations beyond the town of Arkham to the other ill-fated towns of Massachusetts. Two new double-sided tiles bring Kingsport and Innsmouth to vibrant life, while eight more investigators arrive to join your party, ranging from a drifter like β€œAshcan” Pete to a letter carrier such as Stella Clark. These investigators will have their work cut out for them with four entirely new scenarios pitting them against the horrors that lurk beneath the ocean waves. With over 150 encounter and event cards, alongside new assets, monsters, conditions, and the terror mechanic, Under Dark Waves boasts a vast undersea treasure trove, pulling you into some of the Cthulhu Mythos’s most compelling tales.

AH 3rd edition is a bit of an acquired taste following 2nd edition and Eldritch Horror, and it isn't without flaw - the most significant being related to issues with the way the game scales with more players (it's balanced best with 3 or so - you really want to include additional blanks in the mythos cup for more than that.) But, with this expansion, I can confidently state that it's my favorite game of the product line as it strikes a great balance between theme, story, playability, and strategy crunch. This expansion provides enough extra content to significantly increase the replayability of the base game and I'm really looking forward to additional releases even more than I was before. ... show more

This expansion is well worth the cost with 4 new scenarios, 8 new investigators and additional new content. Most importantly for me it also introduced a new doom mechanic, previously there was outbreak and anomalys only, this expansion includes a third way for doom to spread to the scenario sheet-terror. There is essentially as much content here as in the entire AH3 base game and I really enjoy all the new mechanics and new neighborhood tiles. It feels very much inspired from Edlritch Horror. No surprise at all. But the game play mechanics are kinda boring and overall this just does everything worse except play time. Was hoping for something a little better.

Simple pick-up and play Arkham game which isn't complex and conveys the "final hour" theme well. The gameplay felt missing mechanics but didn't diminish the fun factor. Unfortunately, most the other players in my group didn't enjoy the game as much.
