okay, I'm not using these as they were intended, rather I built a keyboard tray for my wife. these are SO smooth compared to the normal crap trays out there. nice to use, my wife is please as can be. That said... they are nice linear bearings, cost is easy to deal with, and they seem to hold on to a 5-ply shelf upside-down without issue. I think you can mount them in any direction you like.

The HGR guide rail kit arrived early, it was carefully and securely packed, and the parts were fine. I dinged this otherwise terrific product a star because it contained 16 M5x.8x16mm mounting screws, and there are 18 mounting holes. I made a trip to the local hardware store and bought the needed screws. That's what I didn't like about the sale. What I did like was the following: 1. The guide rails themselves are carefully ground to final size, they're lubricated, and the edges are smooth; no cut fingers in working with this product. 2. The carriage blocks are smooth, clean, lubricated, and their bearings support the blocks as they glide, and I mean glide, quietly along the guide rails. It's all very smooth. No side-to-side wobble. 3. The dimensions, mounting holes, and counterbores are all very close in size. I miked the mounting width of the two pieces of 500 mm guide rails at several steps, and all points were within .002 mm. I set a caliper at the outside edges of a pair of mounting holes, locked the transit, and then moved the caliper to the other hole pairs. Snug fit everywhere. Just right. 4. The cost for 2 pieces of complex shaped steel guide rails 500 mm long and four carriage blocks, delivered to me, ahead of schedule, was $50.02, plus local tax. It's a bargain. 5. One more item: The carriage blocks all have serial/build date numbers within a few dozens of each other. They're identical in appearance. Tip: Have a small magnet available when you mount the guide rails. The screw heads and counterbores are a snug fit, and removing the screws without a magnet is not easy.
