  • Good 3D printer for kids
This 3D printer is great for kids. I have a full size one that took me over 2 hours to assemble. This one came pretty much assembled and you just need to load the filaments. It took me about 10 minutes to set up. The printer works pretty well. The area is a bit small so it’s ideal for smaller figurines. The set came with a roll of filaments and we were able to print my daughter’s favorite character. It does take a long time to print. It’s the same with my main 3D printer too. It’ll generally take hours. But smaller figurines are faster. Overall a good 3D printer to introduce my kids to printing their own stuff. ... show more

  • easy to work, prints horribly
This 3D printer is easy to operate and is definitely made for kids. My complaint is that it will not print right. it will do an okay job at the first layer, but when it gets to a higher level, it will give beef.

  • Not really for children
I don't feel like this is really for children. It's not so easy to set up or figure out. Downloading the proper program helps. I wish it had an American app to use with it. An SD card does come with some preloaded projects. There is only one color of the filament that is needed. You can purchase more on Amazon. There does seem to be a learning curve to this. Someone that is more familiar with 3D printers, may have a different take than someone who has never used one. ... show more

  • Such a dissappointment
I don't know a ton about 3d printing, what I do know it the printers tend to be temperamental, printing can be complicated, and the materials are expensive. When this was offered to me I read the description and thought, hey, this could be cool for my 11 year old especially since the listing here on Amazon has a little kid that can't be over 7 years old with fists in the air next to the printer and his printed toy, maybe it's been simplified and really is so easy even a 7 year old can use it. Boy I was wrong. We got this out of the box and already started to get worried - it has extra attachments, wires, and tools for "adjusting". No instructions on these things or how to use them, mind you, just extra tools. I also assumed it would come with an app or something to print things from or something to create your own toys... nope. Not that I could find anyway. It comes with an SD card that is preloaded with several animals for instant printing, but the QR code on the machine takes you to a Chinese website where you you have to register with the "community" and in return you'll get access to other things members of the "community" created to be 3D printed. No app. I'm sorry but this is so problematic for us on 2 fronts - we are very concerned about PC viruses so I'm not just downloading literally anythign from an overseas website. And I especially don't trust signing my 11 year old kid up to an international "community". Like, who does this? That's insane. Where is the "kid friendly" in all this? Basically, this is a thing mommy or daddy needs to do on demand from kiddo who then has to wait 45 minutes for the toy to create. We used the pre-loaded figures on the SD to try and print. We followed the limited directions on set up, got the string or whatever its called loaded, and kiddo used the single small dial and followed the prompts on the tiny LED panel to set the temperature (which, why do you need to do this every time? Is there a reason little kids need to do this? How is that "easy" and kid friendly? Why would we need to set a temperature? I don't need to set the temperature on a printer on how hot toner needs to be but perhaps this again is my ignorance on 3D printing). For her 1st toy she picked a bear. 45 minutes later, we heard it stopped and ran to check out the creation... it messed up. Our little plastic bear was decapitated right where he'd have a hat on. There was plastic wire balled up in the back of the machine and sticking up from his head. Husband made an adjustments. He said there is a screw he could turn to adjust height, we made sure our table was dead level (it was) and the interior plate was clean. She selected another animal and hit print. 45 minutes later, we had a cat. It's OK. Seems like a fat blob vaguely in the shape of a cat but no detail, no eyes, no whiskers, no nothing. She selected a shark. This is where things really started to go downhill... our shark was flat like a pancake. Husband made more adjustments and she selected another cat. Same thing, flat, mishappen, and clearly not right especially since we already had a cat and knew what it was supposed to look like. We try the dino. This didn't print at all. We open the door to balls of plastic everywhere and no dino, not even the start of a dino. Cleaned and reset again, 45 minutes later we get super dumpy flat dino. She selects another animal, same thing, all plastic, no animal. All in all, we've tried to "print" 17 times using the pre-loaded animals following all directions we can find and at the end of it, we got 5 complete failures, 8 flat weird mess ups, 2 mostly done animals that are missing the tops of their heads and 2 actual full complete animals (and I'd argue they are not quite right and also flat but not as flat as the other disasters). Clearly this isn't a "toy" for a kid. It's complicated, no app, you can't make your specs for things easily, it has limited instructions and has a giant margin of error with zero troubleshooting help, takes a long time and it's really disappointing and frustrating to a kid that has to wait that long for something to "print" for it to be a messed up failure. ... show more

  • Portable printer that works pretty well
I felt pretty lost with this 3D printer at first, due to there not being a lot of instructions. The most important thing: I wasn't even sure if it could print other files than those they provided! (It can!) Learning to use this takes time and patience, even if you watch the included mini videos. But it IS "plug and play" in that I didn't have to do things like assemble it or level the bed. Before getting into the review, I wanted to mention that it's important to install the Cura program version they've included with the unit. I tried a different version first, and the printer wouldn't print. They have included a program preloaded with this printer's specs. In the program, the printer is called: SLJ-8080A. If you want to use the included models (the cat in my photo is one of theirs), they're already in gcode and ready to print. If not, you can find STL files elsewhere and use Cura to convert them to gcode (the program does that for you). Put the generated gcode on the included card, and then into the printer. PRINT QUALITY In the other photo is Benchy (boat), a common print you can find online. It's used to show a printer's capabilities. Benchy took around 1 hour 20 minutes to print. You can compare this Benchy to photos of Benchy from other printers to see how well you think this one prints. I think the quality could be a lot better, but in seeing other Benchy boats, it could have also been a lot worse. The back of the cat didn't turn out great (visible "seam"-looking flaws), but it seemed to have been coded with low settings. None of my prints have been perfect. They have had things like little gaps or strings. Details don't show up well or may not print; the tops of surfaces aren't smooth. They all "look" 3D printed. At the same time, I think the quality is decent enough if you don't mind the 3D look. If things are taken more seriously, there are various things people do post-printing to improve prints, so that can help with ones that turn out a bit rough. A couple of my prints so far were things I printed with plans to improve them with post-printing steps, which does help with keeping expectations low. There have been print failures, but so far they have seemed to be due to plate adhesion issues rather than the machine malfunctioning. FILAMENT Let's move on to some other things! My printer didn't come with the colors of filament shown, and it only came with one color--a .2 KG spool of red PLA filament. I'd prefer something more practical like a neutral, but maybe what it comes with will vary. I do like that the filament came on a spool instead of loose. (Edit 4/30 and 5/10: In using other PLA filaments I've discovered the printer is too small to accommodate holding larger spools. Using a standalone spool holder can cause issues, maybe due to the angle.) BUILD VOLUME A negative of this machine is that the build volume is very limited, and you don't get the full 80 mm x 80 mm x 80 mm with how 3D printers work. The widest thing I have printed, where I tried to fill the full printable size as best as possible, is approximately 2 7/8" wide. I found myself looking at models and realizing the limitations. You can resize things, but that doesn't work for everything. A lot of things need to stay their original sizes to work for scale (things like a dice tower, a marble run, etc.) or for strength, so you can't print them with this small machine. Benchy and the cat are pretty good indicators of what's "big" on this machine--but they're actually quite small! I've used this to print quite a few things so far, all readily findable. This, not counting two manually stopped adhesion issue prints, is how much the PLA it came with was able to print at this writing (with more left!): (1) sample cat (on the card--the rest aren't), (12) tessellating cats (printed two at a time, resized); (2) Benchy boats (one boo-boo (not shown) because I used supports), (1) mini gingerbread house (resized); and (1) mini sign (resized). (Many things were resized, because of the small capacity.) FINAL THOUGHTS Overall, I think it's fun, but my main concern is that it doesn't seem to be fixable if something goes wrong. It might be fixable to someone who really knows how to tinker, but there are 3D printers out there that have replaceable parts, and places you can turn to for help. I feel like once this breaks, it won't be something I'll be able to fix--and part of that is because it's so small to reach into. So I think that and the small build volume are a couple things to keep in mind if considering this printer. Giving this a star rating is challenging. In some ways I'd think if you really plan to get into 3D printing it makes sense to get a standard machine that can be fixed and upgraded. It's hard to see the niche for this tiny one. At the same time, it does an okay job, and may not be as intimidating as a bigger one. Despite its limitations I have found it fun so far, and I appreciate how the small size makes it easy to move. ... show more

  • Intriguing and fun
We have never dealt with 3D printing before and got this to try it out. We followed the instructions and got it set up. It was pretty easy to get it up and running. We enjoyed printing the different objects ... and found we like 3D printing. This is a great little printer to get acquainted with 3D printing and what is involved. It comes with software and some medium. A good beginners 3D printer. ... show more
