I've purchased 8 of these jars total, in the 2, 1 and 0.5 gallon sizes. Pros: 1. Good, simple glass design.... stable, pretty hard to tip when filled with ingredient...... wide mouth that makes it easy for reaching in and scooping out 2. Glass material is so much more satisfying than plastic kitchen containers, which seem to be the norm 3. Cheap price, especially compared with other glass jars available from places like Sur la Table 4. Sturdy; unlike other reviewer I've never had a problem with these jars breaking in the past 2 years I've owned them. The glass is relatively thick and the lids are in fact sturdy and have survived being dropped a few times... Cons: 1. Like another reviewer has noted, some of them come with cosmetic defects like bubbles, or an imbalanced lip 2.     • Excellent Kombucha Jar!

I made the mistake of being uber cheap for several months on my jar for kombucha and was making my brew in a glass bunch bowl scrounged at the thrift store. Finally after months of drinking vinegary swill I decided to "splurge" and get this jar from anchor hocking. I placed my tea and scoby into the jar, let it do its thing for two weeks and sampled the brew just today. Wow! the diameter of this jar is perfect for allowing a super thick healthy scoby to form at the top of the brew. This makes an air tight seal that prevents any of the carbonation from escaping and makes delicious sparkling kombucha. I actually feel embarrassed I wasted so much time with my stupid punch bowl and I wouldn't share this story if I wasn't so happy with the results of this jar. If you're a home brewer this jar will work perfectly. I got this jar for seven dollars not to long ago. Since then the price has jumped quite a bit, but I have a feeling that in a little bit they'll lower it again. Shopping amazon is just a matter of catching the price at the right time it seems. I'd hangout and wait for the seven dollar price tag again and then jump on it right away. Yep, that's all I've got. Cheers! ... show more

If you have specifically the BIG BERKEY Water Filter (THE ONLY MODELWITH AN 8.5-IN DIAMETER) this jar is a MUST-HAVE, even if you are not also using the submerged, white PF-2 fluoride/arsenic filters shown in this photo. FOR THOSE USING ONLY THE BLACK BERKEY FILTERS IN THEIR BIG BERKEY A. Red Dye Test If you are using only the Black Berkey Filters, you must perform a Red Dye Test to ascertain that your filters are removing contaminants. You MUST do this when you first install the filters and then periodically, whenever you notice a decrease in flow rate. To perform the Red Dye Test, the Berkey website recommends that you fill the upper chamber to the maximum and then continue the test until ALL the fluid has emptied into transparent glass containers. The problem with this is that the Big Berkey upper chamber contains up 2 gallons of water; therefore, you need a container below this chamber that also can handle two full gallons. This Anchor Hocking jug can do that. The reason you must allow ALL two gallons in the chamber to pass into your glass container is that you need to ascertain that the water coming out of EACH of the 2-4 Black Berkey filters is clear, without even a hint of red or pink color or tint. This jar allows you to observe that. B. Comparing the Flow Rates of Your 2-4 Black Berkey Filters A second important reason to have this jug is that it allows you to compare the flowr rates of your 2-4 Black Berkey filters. If you are CERTAIN that you have properly "primed" your 2-4 filters but you notice that the flow rate of one or more is MUCH slower than the others, despite performing the additional testing recommended by Berkey, the company allows up to 30 days to exchange your defective filter(s). Or, if you purchased them from Amazon, this company, too, allows an exchange within 30 days. After the 30 days, they have a 2-year replacement warranty IF puchased from Berkey or an Authorized Dealer. FOR THOSE USING BOTH THE BLACK BERKEY FILTERS AND THE WHITE PF-2 FILTERS IN THEIR BIG BERKEY AS IN THE PHOTO C. Detecting the Source of Cloudy Water The white filters MUST be removed for the red dye test. But once users have replaced them, the jug is also exceedingly helpful. Those who use the white filters may notice that the outputted water is cloudy; but the only way to know WHICH particular filter(s) is/are putting out cloudy water, this jar is essential. D. Detecting which, if any, of the white filters Has an Abnormally Slow Flow Rate If any of your 2-4 white filters is defective in terms of either cloudy output or slow flow rate, despite "purging" it/them correctly as in the instructions, this jug allows you to know which is/are the culprits that should be exchanged within 30 days. USING BERKEY'S LIMITED WARRANTIES Provided they are purchased either from Berkey directly or from an Authorized Dealer, Berkey offers exchange warranties on both the Black Berkey and the white PF-2 filters. The Anchor Hocking jug allows you to detect any failures that occur within the warranty periods. What this means is that this jug could, depending upon your experience of a defect, pay for itself. E. USERS OF THE WHITE PF-2 FILTERS WILL FIND THIS JUG VERY HELPFUL WHENEVER THEY FILL THEIR UPPER CHAMBER: IT PROVIDES A SAFE PLACE TO PARK YOUR UPPER CHAMBER Berkey recommends emptying the LOWER chamber each time users fill their UPPER chamber, to avoid an overflow situation. What this means is that users of the PF-2 filters need a place to safely park their upper chamber while they are emptying their lower chamber. This 2-gallon jug provides a perfect location for parking one's upper chamber, with 2-4 PF-2 filters attached below and 2-4 Black Berkey filters located inside.* *NOTE: If there as many as 8 filters and all are still filled with water, the upper chamber will be heavy. ... show more

Beautiful, made in America, and exactly what I needed. I make bread all the time and go through lots of flour. I wanted the 2 gallon jar but could only get this 1 gallon so I'll just have to fill it more often. It holds my 5 lb. Bread Flour perfectly! Wide mouth opening make it perfect for getting the right amount the first time without all the mess. It's all glass, no seal around the edge of the lid which is fine with me but make sure this is what you want / need before you buy. I did my research and you won't find any this big and beautiful with a seal. If you do, let me know! It came with stickers on it, like the made in USA and I loved how they peeled right off without leaving a sticky mess behind. Thank you! I have a shelf that I store my power and protein bars. I was making due with a deli tray turned upside down when I seen this product online. I then ordered a couple of the jars being unsure about the actual size. When they arrived I opened them up and they were packed in such a way as they did not break. I then filled them up and have had no issues with the jars. The only thing I would have liked would have been a plastic cushion attached to the lid. Currently there is no barrier between the lid and the jar; as a result every time you get into them you hear a clanking of glass hitting glass. This only concerns me because they might chip after numerous uses. Other than that they work great. ... show more
