There is a 5 minute run time and you have to let it almost fully cool down to produce dense thick smoke again. I will say the smoke has a weird smell. Even though the bottle states "odorless". Vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks in automotive systems can be very difficult to locate--but if you can pinpoint them, they may be relatively easy to repair. This smoke machine, while smaller than you might expect, is actually a powerful diagnostic tool that can help you quickly locate the source of such leaks. It heats a little bit of baby oil (which you must provide--the manufacturer recommends the Johnson & Johnson brand) to produce the smoke, which is then introduced into the automotive system with a small amount of air pressure. When you see the smoke coming out somewhere in the car's system, you've found the leak! Mine is the L100 model, which does not have a built-in air compressor--but I have a small compressor I can connect to it to provide the needed air pressure. (Similar models with internal air pumps are also available, at slightly higher prices.) The smoke machine runs off 12 volts, which can be provided by the battery of the vehicle being tested (a power cord with battery clips comes with the unit). Other accessories included with the kit allow the smoke output of the unit to connect to the vehicle without leaks. So, you introduce smoke into the system (with the engine NOT running, of course), and then look for any place where smoke is escaping. A bright flashlight can be a big help... The manufacturer says the unit has a five-minute working cycle (which means it might shut off after five minutes of operation). That's probably enough time to find the leak--but if the unit shuts off before you're finished, just let it cool down and then start it up again. This machine could save you more than its cost with just a single use!

The media could not be loaded. I am a Contractor/Business Owner and I service all of our equipment and vehicles myself and have been in need of a quality smoke machine for a long time now. I saw this one and knew I had to give it a shot. I am not disappointed in my decision! I love that this has a built in air pump and no external air supply is needed! Oftentimes I am on a vehicle or machine that is out in the middle of the grass or left off wherever there was room on the day it was dropped back off and those locations are nowhere near an outlet, nevermind an air hose. Also, this being so small and portable I can run this off an external 12 volt supply anywhere I can carry it. The machine is much smaller than I thought it would be and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned. Less storage space and not in the way while it is in use. The unit has a nice bright display that can be seen when working outdoors and it is super easy to use. There is even a strap included to tie the power cable and tube too, to keep it all bundled neatly when I am done with it. The machine puts out smoke immediately and the smoke can be dialed in just the way I want it. I can have everything from slow, thicker smoke to lots of volume with a ½ PSI driving it into where I need it. Even the sight glass is easy to see when filling it with mineral oil or baby oil. The kit comes with a universal pump up bladder plug adaptor and a repair kit for the bladder should it become punctured. An EVAP port hose extension, a HUGE Pack of plugs to seal up many sizes of orifice, a valve core tool, a funnel for filling, a hook for hanging, and a “diffuser.” Basically everything needed in most cases to get it going out of the box and diagnosing EVAP issues in minutes. Mineral oil/Baby Oil, AKA “smoke fluid” is not included and will need to be obtained separately. Overall, I really like the unit and the flexibility it provides me without needing an air hose to get it working. I like the included accessory kit as it is mostly all helpful and useful. I like this unit so much I have already ordered additional smoke machine accessories so that I have everything I need, on hand, for anything they may cross my path. I waited such a long time to get one of these and I should have gotten one way sooner. This machine is way easier to use and more cost effective than just “throwing parts” at a problem and not knowing if it will work or not. I can’t say “I can’t wait to use it again” but I can say when the time comes to use it, I’ll Be READY! This one is a good item and operates great. It should save me a TON of Time, MONEY and HEADACHES moving forward. I’d definitely recommend this one. I would order this exact unit again if I needed to. I have no regrets ordering this one. A+++ item!

This ANCEL L100 is a decent, budget friendly smoke machine, but unless you are on a tight budget, I would spend the extra $30 and get one that has some more upgrades. I like that it has a lot of the major features as some of the more expensive ones, but it’s still missing some things. For starters, you must use your own air compressor to pump smoke through the system. That can be seen as a positive (less to break) or a negative depending on how you look at it. The switch to change the pressure gauge measurements is a little bit of a pain. ANCEL sells some better models that have some better upgrades for just a little extra expense. They have their own air pump so that it doesn’t take from your compressor, does all the systems, and better controls. Overall, I think this is a good choice if you are on a tight budget, but a little extra could get you a lot more with some of the other ANCEL smoke machines.

Would I have preferred it be the model with a built in pump, sure, but that is another part to break, so I am happy to have this manually operated smoke unit. You have to have a compressor and air line, but that's it, everything else is in this kit. I appreciate the variety of attachments to ensure versatile usage. It does exactly what it is designed to do, and does it well, highlighting hard to trace leaks. It looks sharp, hangs well, and is not terribly noisy during use. Operation is simple, fill with mineral oil, attach air, attach power clamps (for heating element), and you are off to the races...or you will be as soon as you find that d*mn leak.
