Description

A love letter to America from the pen of actor, producer, immigrant, and activist Wilmer Valderrama. In this timely memoir, Valderrama looks back on his journey from a tiny pueblo in Venezuela to the big city of Los Angeles—how he discovered his calling as an actor and later as a USO Global Ambassador, found work in Hollywood as an unproven Latino actor, and used his determination and success to build a new life for himself, his family, and many others.Raised by two hard working parents as they navigated their family through a rapidly changing country and the rise of Venezuela's controversial former leader Hugo Chavez, Valderrama delves into his family's flight from their home and the challenges of emigrating to the United States. After being cast in a school theatre production, Valderrama knew he had found his calling and began thinking of ways to help support his struggling family. He would attempt the impossible: find work in Hollywood as an unproven Latino actor. Following countless auditions and frequent criticisms of his accent, he created the personality that would eventually land him the role as Fez on That 70s Show.It catapulted him to stardom.Over the coming years, he would create the smash show, Yo Mamma, voice the lead character in Disney's Encanto, and eventually join the cast of NCIS. But it was through service to others and his first USO trip where Valderrama found his further calling—entertaining and encouraging U.S. troops around the world. The saga of a determined soul, An American Story: Everyone's Invited is an exploration of America through the eyes of a young immigrant from Venezuela who had a dream to change the world, a talent for entertaining, and the resolve to build a new life, taking as many as possible with him on the journey."This is my way of showing my love, my gratitude to the country that changed my whole life." • Fun read.
Being a fan of That 70s Show and NCIS, it was interesting to read how Wilmer got here. The backstory is interesting, and he shares his feelings and thoughts along his journey. I look forward to seeing more of Wilmer in TV shows and movies.

  • THE HEART WARMING STORY OF FEZ !!!
Awwwwe Fez ...you broke me !!!! OH My My !!! What a wonderful wonderful story !! I feel very fortunate to have travelled this journey with you through this book . The trip down memory lane to really experience the life of my all time TV boyfriend Fez was woww...unbelievable !!! After all these years and loving Fez and That 70's Show ...I never realized that Fez was an immigrant, nor was I aware of the heart wrenching woes that an immigrant could face in the USA. This book was a great eye opener. I love the way Wilmer was able to stick to his love for family, and his passion for his people, and most of all his Dream !! He moved from being my TV boyfriend Fez, to my now TV Heart Throb Nick Torres on my fave TV Show NCIS on CBS .... I love you forever Fez .... hats off to you !!! I love you more Nick Torres .... job well done on this book which tells such an awesome story !! Looking forward to the NEW NCIS Season 22 next week. ... show more

  • An Enlightening Read
Valderrama's story is powerful. At times is is enlightening; at other points it touches your heart. Above all, it is a story about making one's own luck.

  • Just okay
3.5 stars RECOMMEND Wilmer seems to believe that he is an introspective, deep thinker. But this strongly conflicts with his dating much younger women which he doesn't address. Additionally, the Danny Masterson rape convictions and Michael Weatherly sexual assault allegation are not mentioned at all. Also, he glosses over his partying years and brags about taking his friends on trips all over while covering the costs and always picking up the check. Really? There was a missed opportunity to be a transparent and authentic celebrity for Wilmer. Instead, he talks about all of the famous people he has met and how they are like brothers/sisters to him. Everyone is a friend which is just not believable. ... show more

  • Amen - Everyone should read.
I loved this book. I started to read because I love his work on NCIS. I agree with everything he says about this country, how we treat each other and especially how we treat people trying to make a better life here in America. I have friends who have green cards and the government makes it almost impossible for the ordinary working person to become a citizen. Come on people, the American Indians are the only true citizens. The rest of us are children of immigrants. Love your neighbor, give of yourself and we might have a better America for our children. ... show more
