  • Makes food black. Good price. Doesn't thin batters.
Sometimes your food presentation can be greatly enhanced by dyeing it black. This food coloring is great for those times. I will say, this food coloring was thicker than I expected. It has the consistency of craft paints: not quite a paste, but also not a thin liquid. Because of this, it didn't thin my batter very much, which was nice, but you have to use more than you would expect. Nothing crazy, just more than one drop like with normal food dyes. Many "black" dies are actually a combination of very dark blues and reds. This dye seemed to be more of a very very dark grey-green. If you use enough, it will make your food appear perfectly black, though, which brings me to my next point: leave some batter un-dyed and bake it with your dyed batter; otherwise, it will be hard to tell if your cake, cookies, or whatever, are done, not done, or burnt down to charcoal. One other thing, this stuff seems to be indigestible. That means it will come out of you as dark as it comes in. Not really a pro or con, just a little alarming the first time I noticed. I'm not sure what it's made of, but it might not be "vegan approved," if that matters to you. The good: Works well, black appearance (not dark blue or red), doesn't have a taste The bad: Thicker than most food dyes - need to use more, mostly indigestible - be prepared ... show more

  • Love americolor
Love americolor. Works great and doesn’t change the taste. Only takes a few drops to get desired color. Black takes more than the normal amount of drops, but still lasts a long time. Easy to use bottles that don’t leak

  • Great food color
Only brand of food coloring I use. I am a baker and love this brand. You only need a drop or two of color to get bright vibrant colors. The gel does not change the food taste at all. I started with the student kits and found I like the product, and now buy the bigger bottles in my most used colors. A little pricey but worth every penny Just make sure with dark colors like black? Red, and navy blue you let the color develop. Usually overnight. All good colors have this issue with these 3 colors. This is still the best brand for result but you must let your mix sit overnight to develop ... show more

  • Perfect
This is the only brand that gives real black color to gum paste and fondant.

  • Americolor gels are the best!
I love that the blacks and reds don't give your food a funky taste like some other brands. You do have to let it sit a minute to allow the color to deepen to get a true idea what your final product will be, but if I am in a hurry I just go a little lighter than I think and it always ends up good.

  • Great For Black Frosting
I purchased this to make black buttercream roses for a large quantity of wedding cupcakes I was hired to make. Yep, you read that right, black frosting. I started with a really good chocolate buttercream frosting that I have used multiple times, and did not have to add much of this color to get to a nice, deep black. It was a large batch of frosting (I used 4 pounds of powdered sugar), and I think I ended up using a tablespoon of this color. I ended up with a brownish black color, but I did make the frosting the night before to give the color a chance to deepen, and it worked out very well. I could not tell that it affected the flavor of the frosting, and the bride was pleased with the results. I have also added this to a chocolate cake, also resulting in a rich black color. ... show more

  • Good but slightly damaged
I've used this product a lot at home and at work and this is the first I ever seen it come busted open or leaking. Most likely it was damaged through the shipping/handling process. Surprisingly the sliver protector was still on it but with a slight opening. There wasn't a lot of coloring wasted, just messy to deal with. still a good amount of color left and was able to use it. ... show more

  • The only food coloring I use
As a home baker, Americolor food coloring is the only food coloring I use to make my decorated sugar cookies. The larger bottles are easy to use and last a long time, even with the amount of baking I do on a regular basis. Great company, great product.
