Description

Featuring the collection of airplanes, art, photographs, and memorabilia of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, this magnificently illustrated book tells the story of the beginnings of flight, through the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate branch of the military, to the unbelievable technological achievements of what is the preeminent air power in the world today. Here are combat aces, Medal of Honor recipients, crusty generals, and average citizens who served in the Air Force. There are philosophers, airplane designers, test pilots, rocket scientists, armorers, and grease monkeys. More than 250 color and 150 black- and-white illustrations and photos and insightful text present the story of the U.S. Air Force of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, published on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United States Air Force and the one hundredth anniversary of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. • Good read
Format: Hardcover
My husband loves this book. It gives the history of each plane. He has shared it with 3 friends who also found it interesting.

  • A compilation of a series of pictures of USAF aircraft.
Format: Hardcover
As a reader, I have looked at aircraft which never made the book due to their not be slotted in the museum timely. The double MIG KILLING F-15C was not slotted in the museum because of service delays. HH-60G, Sukhoi SU-27 and KC-10 not slotted in museum. Plus, I didn't see a picture of the HH-53.

  • Incredible!
Format: Hardcover
To say this book is gorgeous is an understatement. Patterson's photos are some of the best aviation photography I have ever seen, and when you pair them with historical text documenting the history of the USAF, behind the scene info for the USAF museum, and info on numerous veterans, this book as an absolute must-own for any aviation enthusiast. ... show more

  • Disconnects
Format: Kindle
There were a lot of disconnects between the photos and the descriptions. Editing could have better as well. However, it was very informative. I spent 26 years in the USAF and learned a lot about the formative years of the air force

  • American Eagles, A History of the United States Air Force. 2nd Edition.
Format: Hardcover
A fabulous collection of photographs and text! You can open it to any page and jump right in, as it's photos draw you in, and the insightful text is compelling, easy to read and understand. This is a great book for anyone interested in flight, American history, or the Air Force.

  • Kindle version difficult to read. Consider other "versions".
Format: Kindle
Kindle version (downloaded and read on a Kindle Fire) is terrible. Whatever was used to convert the book did a terrible job. Many words are broken (which shouldn't be) and the picture captions, for a very large part of the book, mostly don't connect with the pictures they were intended to describe. This results in having go back and forth as one tries read the book and to decipher what one is reading/seeing. And some areas are just really bad with this issue. If you wish to read this book cohesively, I would suggest getting a hardback or paperback version, which should be better. Not that the title would tell one, but the book is also devoted in the last chapters to being "tour guide" for the museum and its operations; something I was not really anticipating nor looking for in this tome based on its title. I would have given the Kindle version only a one star rating, since it is so poor, but I did find that for the most part the information contained within gave me a much better understanding of the beginnings and history of the US Army Air Corp, (the service in which my father proudly served in WWII); its aircraft and development; and the transition to what is now the US Air Force. ... show more
