The item came in a large, heavy box and when I opened it there were quite a few pieces. I've put furniture together many times before so I wasn't concerned about the amount of parts and pieces. The instructions were the usual pictures and minimal wording but they were easy to follow and the pieces were all labeled with the item number. I put the bookcase together myself, which did not pose any difficulties for me, using a drill/driver and a screwdriver. The drill/driver came in handy for the many screws that hold the corner brackets in place and the screwdriver for the quarter-turn locks. The entire assembly took about an hour. The bookcase went together without a hitch. All pre-drilled holes were in the correct place and everything lined up correctly. The only issue I have is with the paint finish. The entire bookcase could use another coat of paint. It looks like it was painted twice when it needed to be painted three times. The side supports have a better finish than the shelves. I have a few shelves where the front edge of the shelf is clearly painted half way across with a second coat of paint and the other half with only one coat. And the bottom of the shelves clearly have only a single coat of paint, which is a problem for the upper shelves because the unit is 75" tall and you always see the bottom of the upper shelves. These look almost unfinished especially since the rear shelf supports are finished much better. Overall, I got what I paid for. ... show more

Easier to assemble with a power drill. Very sturdy. Like other have mentioned the bottoms of the shelves are only lightly painted.

i have been assembling build-by-instruction hex-wrench furniture since before Ikea existed on American dirt, and this bookshelf is above and beyond the most complex, frustrating, and physically strenuous assembly i have ever done. Just taxing from start to finish. Took me two days. The instructions call for a hand screwdriver to force in most of the screws (because it is possible to over-screw and then you're, well, screwed), but if you're careful you can get away with using a drill. Even then, these took me two days each to put together. Also, some of the brackets and screws and screw-holes don't line up so well, so you have to torque the brackets out of shape as much as you can. still, once they're in place they seem sturdy enough, at least for my purposes (NOT heavy books). ... show more

The bookshelf took well over an hour to assemble. The item came with no directions and was missing some items for assembly. I went to website to print out directions. Additionally, the pictures of bookshelf on Amazon do not show the gold brackets. They look horrible and are in front of bookshelves. And can be difficult to screw into wood so they are flush in each corner. Overall the bookshelf is sturdy. The color says expresso but it is more a cherry color. The top shelf underside is very visible and is unfinished. This and the bright brass brackets is a big oversight on manufacturer's part. ... show more

I recommend an electronic screwdriver to assemble this bookshelf. I used a regular screwdriver and my hands were incredibly sore after putting this together. At a very leisurely pace, this took 1.5 Harry Potter movies to assemble by myself (with breaks). Read the instructions carefully. I actually forgot to put in two of the support screws on the bottom shelf, and had to have my boyfriend come over and take it apart to redo for me, because I was over it. At least it could be disassembled and reassembled. I chose the white color to blend with the wall in a nook. There are safety screws to attach to the wall, or blocks that you can attach to the back of the bottom legs. This shelf was pretty decent for the money and able to ship across the Pacific. I’ve never noticed cam bolts, dowels, and angle brackets together in a solid wood shelving unit, but okay... The single unit I assembled took about one hour to assemble, but I did not use the angle brackets on every shelf which would’ve taken much longer. I purchased three additional units, which I combined into a single unit. I selected this product mostly because it was solid wood, therefore it would be simple to customize for my purposes. The shelf is very awkward. It does not sit flush against the wall because of the two “feet” at the bottom. I am assuming they are there to make the shelf more balanced but I don’t like it. It also has no lip on the back of the shelf. I bought it to use as a book shelf- it won’t work. Lastly, it is insanely tall. Because of this, you can see all of the hardware used to hold the shelf in place - definitely not a clean finish. ... show more

This is an attractive and sturdy bookshelf and the best looking ladder-style shelf I found. I really enjoy there being a top shelf. There were some minor flaws (scratches, scuffs) on the wood and I wish the brackets that hold the shelves were closer in color to the wood as opposed to brass colored. It’s easy to notice the brackets. Assembly was fairly easy although the hardware pieces could have been labeled better. I enjoy that the bookshelf can be easily disassembled into two pieces (top and bottom) for easy moving. Overall a good deal for the price. ... show more
