I did a dumb thing, not thinking. I bought an inexpensive journal and then tried my new pen on it. It felt scratchy and the ink didn't flow properly. I thought I would have to return this pen until, duh, I tried it on several different qualities of paper. The problem was that this particular cheap paper had a wash of ivory color that was making the pen feel scratchy and the ink flow not optimal. I think that would be so for any colored paper. Because this pen is delightfully inexpensive and I was giving it a first try, I assumed the pen was the problem. Not so. It writes very smoothly on the choice of finer, white paper. Those of us who love fountain pens know the bliss of a smooth writing pen and such a pen deserves the investment in good paper. I'm just lucky I thought of it before returning a perfectly good pen. Leave the colored paper for ball point or pencil.

this is a surprisingly good pen for the price! it works just the same as all of the other fountain pens, it's sturdy and feels like it's made from some turned brass or something. it's well weighted, and the cap posts securely on the back while you're writing, without throwing off the balance. it feels like it's a high quality, and i would be willing to use this to take notes. i've done several homework assignments with it and it's an absolute pleasure. if this is your very first fountain pen, i'm gonna give you a quick rundown! make sure to get fountain pen friendly paper, otherwise your lines are going to look a little ugly (normal and cheaper papers can have the ink bleed and spread on the page) some good fountain pen friendly brands are rhodia, clairefontaine, tomoe river, maruman, hp premium 32lb, TOPS premium dockets (gold), and the mintra premium legal pads. the three budget options: rhodia no.16 / dot_pad (a 90 page A5 pad for about $6) a half-ream of hp premium 32 (500 pages for $16ish) a six pack of mintra premium legal pads (six lined legal pads for $15) the pen comes with three ink cartridges. the black ink in the cartridges is actually surprisingly good (and i'm comparing it to nice bottled inks). the three cartridges will probably last you two weeks if this is the only pen you use, but several months if you use other pens or write sparingly. if you want to upgrade to bottled inks, i would also recommend buying a piston converter (this pen is "standard international" size--search for "standard international converter") [special note for newbies: do NOT use "india ink" in a fountain pen! it has gunk that builds up and almost immediately ruins your pen. it can only be dissolved with ammonia/windex and will never go away completely.] one of my favorite bottled inks is aurora black. it's a good, consistent black, adored by fountain pen users as the single greatest black ink on the planet. if you'd like to branch out and try some interesting colors, lamy makes some very good colored inks (but their cartridges can't be used in this pen, this only works with bottled ink and a converter) pilot also makes a bottled ink line called iroshizuku that's got lots of fun colors! my favorite is yu-yake (sunset orange) if you'd like a black ink that works on cheap paper without feathering (soaking into the paper and spreading) or bleeding through the page, then noodler's anti-feather / x-feather is the best ink for that purpose. if you'd like some good cartridges to use in this pen, i really do like the amazonbasics ones (can't find them on here!), but my other favorites are the manuscript calligraphy ones. they're a very consistent black ink in a standard international cartridge, which works wonderfully in this pen. papers: rhodia 16 https://www.amazon.com/Rhodia-Staplebound-Notepads-sheets-Black/dp/B003UCL77U/ rhodia dot_pad https://www.amazon.com/Rhodia-Wirebound-Notepad-8-1-Dotted/dp/B00B9BWB0G/ HP premium 32 https://www.amazon.com/HP-Printer-Paper-Premium32-Letter/dp/B000099O2W/ 6pk mintra premium legal pads https://www.amazon.com/Mintra-Office-Legal-Pads-perforated/dp/B07Q4R7KBS/ TOPS legal dockets https://www.amazon.com/TOPS-63950-Docket-Perforated-Canary/dp/B00008ZPKT/ ink: the manuscript cartridges (work in this pen) https://www.amazon.com/Manuscript-Pen-MC0401CB-Calligraphy-Cartridges/dp/B002SOYMO6/ amazon's recommendation for a standard int'l converter (to use this pen with bottled ink--yes they are compatible) https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Fountain-Pen-Ink-Converter/dp/B002P2T42G/ bottled inks: aurora black ink (you can get it for cheaper from pen retailers like pen chalet though) https://www.amazon.com/Aurora-bottle-125-N-Black-regular/dp/B002OLT9JG/ lamy bottled ink https://www.amazon.com/LAMY-Crystal-30ml-Glass-Bottle/dp/B07HMR4QK3/ iroshizuku bottled ink https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Iroshizuku-Fountain-Turquoise-69212/dp/B003MVKFRW/ noodler's x-feather ink https://www.amazon.com/Noodlers-Ink-Oz-X-Feather-Black/dp/B00AWFEMZC/

I have bought 3 of these pens. 2 F point, and one M. I am reviewing this singular pen because it is the most expensive of the group. The F points are excellent. Excellent value for the money, write well. Good pen. Takes International style ink cartridges or converters, so you can use other inks as well. Smooth, consistent inkflow, I highly recommend those. This one? It leaked. Tried different cartridges, they are leaking from within the nib assembly, but not dripping onto the page. I got a refund, but was disappointed. I didn't have to return it, (I did get it on sale, so the price was nearly the same as the F nibs) so that was a plus. Keeping it, I was able to experiment and discover the hidden gems of these pens. You can disassemble them, and find compatible higher rated parts. The nibs, go gold, or rhodium, or whatever. A lot cheaper to buy a nib than a whole body. Ink delivery system pulls out of the barrel, so you can replace that too. This makes it an excellent stealth pen. No one will want to steal your "amazon basics fountain pen", unless you tell them of the improvements under the hood. I am using the M body to hold any and all extra nibs I buy and accumulate. Overall, good job in the bringing to market a good sub $10 pen (the F, and the M on sale). Great entry level pen for those who we wish to convert.

This is an amazingly affordable fountain pen that writes better than some costing 2, 3 or even 4 times more. Writes smooth. The cartridges that come with it are small. I would recommend you using the refillable cartridge. Excellent value.

I was getting sick of using a ballpoint pen, So I decided to try using an old-time Fountain pen, what a difference that made, now I feel like I have joined the upper class, If you try using one you will notice the difference right away. One more thing make sure you buy extra replacement cartridges because you will use more ink.
