⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5 stars) Compact, Stylish, and Functional for Small Spaces I picked up the Amazon Basics 5-Cube Bookcase in black to add some storage and display space to my living room, and overall, I’m really happy with it. The design is simple and modern, and it blends in easily with my other furniture. The black finish looks clean and doesn’t scratch too easily as long as you’re careful during assembly. Assembly was straightforward and took less than 30 minutes with the included instructions. The pieces fit together without any major issues, and I really appreciate that it comes with an anti-tip kit for extra safety—especially if you have kids or pets. The cubes themselves are on the smaller side (around 9″ openings), so keep in mind that not all storage bins will fit perfectly. Standard 12″ fabric cubes are a little too big, but some flexible fabric bins can squeeze in. I ended up using slightly smaller organizers, and they work perfectly. It also holds books, decor, and small plants without any sagging. One thing to note is that this bookcase is made from MDF/particleboard, so it’s not designed for heavy loads. I wouldn’t overload it with heavy textbooks or lots of vinyl records, but for light to medium use, it’s sturdy enough. Nice, simple, well made and easy to install. Wood is not cheap MDF but quality on and thicker than many others. Used in conjunction with some 12” cube cloth drawers.

I got this bookcase on a whim because i decided I needed a little bit more storage even though I was initially hesitant about it being amazon basics. I'm glad I went through with it though because it turned out to be just what I needed. My first real surprise putting this together was the weight of the individual pieces. I know I expected a bookcase but I don't think I expected it to be as sturdy as it is. The experience of putting it together was something you might expect and it ended up turning out to be much easier than I originally anticipated to assemble. Everything was labeled and in bags parts wise and the instructions at first glance seemed way too simple to assemble a piece like this. There are only a few real steps to assembling it but it does end up working out and the assembly is very easy and straight forward. Certain things screw into other places in ways that really make it so you can't mess up very easily which is always nice. The are assembled in two halves with the top half and bottom half of the bookcase, after which you fit the top half onto the bottom half. I did it standing up and seemed to work just find and the pieces attach together with being slotted into multiple holes which allow you to turn a screw when seated properly are turned a lock the pegs into place very securely. I would assemble the two halves close to where you want the bookcase to be placed because together the whole thing does end up being a bit heavier than I initially would have guessed. The last step after this is nailing the backing, which is some sort of thin particle board, to the backside of the bookcase to enclose everything. This could be done faster if you have a nailer or it is easily done with a normal hammer and a little plastic tool which essentially you use to set the nail upright and straight while you nail it in so nothing ends up crooked which i found highly useful for something so simple and a nice thought with the user being taken into consideration. After that you can just have it sit wherever you choose who it does come with a bracket and anchor and screw you can screw into the top of the bookcase and then into the wall, which using the anchor or screwing it right into a stud which secures the case to a wall. This only adds to the already sturdy case and doesn't have an effect on the look of the overall finished product, especially if you put some sort of knick knack on the very top of the bookcase to obstruct the bracket view. The overall experience and ease of which it came together make this a piece i would consider getting more of simply for the quality and sturdiness, giving me even more room to display or store things against walls.

I will say it's not the hardest thing to put together it look like it is when she put all the pieces at the box. One word of advice use a drill why so you can get more precise with when you got to put the screws into the pieces. Because trying to use a screwdriver you going to do like I did and poke holes through the shelves or the side. I wasn't 100% accurate because it's very thin so it's easy to mess up.

Generally, the great thing about AmazonBasics is the predictability for what you pay for. At this price, you likely will not find a better 5-cube stack shelf for the money. Build time was under an hour, it lays flush to the floor, and arrived with no issues. The ease of building has one trade-off, which is all of the screws are exposed on the outside and require black cover stickers. These stickers are noticeable in light. Thankfully, I wanted to use this cube stack in my small laundry closet and don’t mind them. I might hesitate putting this cube stack in a high-visibility area such as a bedroom or family room due to this.
