  • Like them, but not what Altra used to be.
Size: 10.5 Color: Black
I’ve been wearing Altra shoes for at least 12 years if not more. Way back when you used to have to order from a catalog and then their website…. But now that Vanity Fair bought them out, they just don’t last as long as they used to. VF bought them out in 2018, they own Vans, North Face, Dickies, SmartWool, Wrangler, and several other shoe companies and other clothing companies. I have owned all the original Altra shoes although I wear a 10 and every other shoe Altras have always been a half size bigger so a 10 1/2 for me. No complaint there. My only complaint is that now the toebox is not as wide as they used to be and I personally think that is for aesthetic reasons. The materials used don’t seem to last long and hold up under trail running and hiking conditions as the older shoes used to. I have had at least 30 pair or more and the original lone Peak shoes would last quite some time. The new Altra shoes are now the same as Hoka One Ones, they just don’t hold up as well as they used to. What do I see that has changed? For starters the cushioning, it does not last as long as expected when paying $130 or more for a pair of running trail running and hiking shoes. The beloved toebox has gotten slightly narrower. The tread does not last as long, especially the more aggressive tread. the lugs tend to break off or just plain wear out. I still love Altras I will continue wearing them however, I wish the days are old, where construction and wearability were top notch! But that’s the price of progress specially, when I conglomerate like VF owns what used to be a cottage industry shoe. ... show more

  • Width is different from Olympus 4. Altra has made their shoes slimmer.
Size: 9 Color: Black
- Refer to image, Olympus 4 is ~12cm in width & Torin 5 is ~10cm in width. - Both shoes are Mens US 9. - Length of both shoes are similar. My feet is 26.5cm for reference. - I have bunions and wear a big toe separator. Olympus 4 fits comfortably but Torin 5 is too narrow. - The sole of Olympus 4 is wider and my feet rest fully on the sole, whereas Torin 5 has a slimmer sole and my small toe is not resting on the sole. Also, my small toe is pressed against my 4th toe. So, toe spread is not as natural as Olympus 4. - Olympus 4 has more cushion than Torin 5. - Olympus 4 wider base makes it more stable in comparison to Torin 5. BUT with that said, - Do not purchase Olympus 4 if you're planning to wear it on tiles, city, road, drainage cover when the floor is wet or moist. I've nearly fallen a few times wearing the Olympus 4 while working in a clinic. The sole of the Olympus 4 is very slippery on wet tiles. Hence, I wanted to try out the Torin 5 that has a different sole. ... show more

  • Great for walking and exercise.
Size: 12 Color: Black
Altra shoes always meet my expectations.

  • Nice shoe except for hard top of the tongue
Assuming you wear decently thick socks the shoe is fairly comfortable. The top of the tongue is covered by heavy (kind of sharp edged) material that is very stiff and would dig into your skin (other reviewers have mentioned cuts they suffered from after wearing for a run). I tested these walking around the house with socks that went above my ankle and it didn't bother me (as of yet). I did try it on with shorter socks and I definitely understand how people have ended up being cut by the edge of the tongue. I'm very perplexed as to why a shoe designer would create a shoe with such an obvious flaw. One of the main reasons I love my older Altra Escalantes is the nice soft tongue and the zero drop which is wonderful for those who don't want a heel in their running or walking shoe. It does appear the material is water resistant or water repellant (although the rest of the shoe is not). It does seem airier (more breathable) than my former Escalantes and is also lighter weight. The shoe provides some rigid support at the heel and ankle and also at the front toe box. I am a fan of zero drop shoes with cushioning as I do most of my walking/running on city streets and the cushioning makes for comfortable strides. For those looking for sizing the 10 wide is EU size 44 UK size 9 .. although it fits more like a EU43 I think ... show more

  • Great running shoes for wide feet
Size: 11 Color: Majolica Blue
Love these shoes and this is my 2nd pair. Had an ankle problem that cleared up shortly after switching to these shoes. The problem people have with the top edge of the tongue isn't an issue with my shorty socks since they cover that portion of my ankle. If the edge is rubbing your your bare leg it might feel uncomfortable. These fit smaller than my other Altras. Had to go up a half size from my normal size. ... show more

  • Great Running Shoe
Size: 11 Color: Majolica Blue
I have been wearing Altra Torin running shoes for 5 years. I find these to fit the best because of the extra space in toe area. They seem to last longer than any other running shoe I have had previously They are comfortable and give me the support I need.

  • Not Your Torin 4.5s
Size: 10 Color: Black
Overall rating on 1-5 scale: 3. Prior to purchasing the Torin 5's, I was a serial Torin 4.5 user. The most comfortable running shoe I've ever owned. Tons of support, tons of cushion. I learned how to be a medial/front foot striker runner in these babies. What I loved even more about the 4.5s was the fact that they didn't lose their utility once the cushion/shoe life cycle ended. I'd use my old 4.5's as house work shoes or transition shoes when I needed to wear cleats as a referee but wanted a comfy, roomy shoe in between games. The 5's are lightweight, provide a ton of support, and are overall a good shoe. They run smaller than the 4.5's (a nightmare for any runner who establishes a comfort level with a particular model), they run narrower than the 4.5's, and they are firmer/stiffer than the malleable 4.5s. I'm not sure why so many major changes occurred in one shoe model, but it was utterly disappointing. I have run about 50 miles in my 5's and know that I'm stuck with them, now. I'm either going to have to find a different ALTRA model to run in, now that they have destroyed this line, or start shopping the alternate market for old, unused 4.5s. Count me as disappointed. ... show more

Size: 10 Color: Majolica Blue
