  • Not "Everything" but Only Part of the Story
There is no question that the author knows his stuff. And for the portions of the music business that he does include, the book is thorough and helpful. But, the author is an attorney, and so the book is focused on legal aspects of the music business, and so is targeted at “suits” and protp-suits (i.e., students in business or law school). But it isn’t targeted at just-starting-out musicians. So I wouldn’t characterize the book as The Business of Music 101—it’s more advanced, and it is NOT “everything” you need to know about the music business. If you were, say, a musician in an aspiring band, as a first step you wouldn’t (as the book seems to suggest) find an agent. What agent would want to represent a band with no track record? Or if you did find an agent, how assiduously would that agent’s representation be? And, once your band had a song that you thought was decent you wouldn’t as a first step, as the book seems to suggest, start knocking on publishing companies’ doors. Why would they return your call? What would be really helpful for many aspiring musicians is a book (or video) of what you as an aspiring musician and band should really do as a first step or two to “making it”. There are books out there that give you suggestions/instructions on how to build an audience and other basic building blocks, that I think should be prerequisites to read and act on before this book. ... show more

  • A must for a non music-business Mom...aka: "Momanger"
I got the new release yesterday. By page 16....I had already learned a ton and marked it up! Our 18 year old daughter is the "artist with an interest in business", but definitely not blessed with the orderly mind for business. I am ordering another of these books for her bookshelf!

  • Detailed With a Dash of Humor
I haven't finished it yet but I love it so far! It has tons of info on various positions in the field. It is more geared toward Musicians seeking their Team, but it gives good info for those who want to be PART OF their Team. Admittedly, once you get into the details of finances and whatnot, it gets a little dry. That's not my area of expertise (one reason why I'm wanting to learn), so typically after I finish a section like that I need to give myself a break, and may need to come to it again to understand it better. Overall I love the Authors verbiage. His personality really comes through with the added humor and nerdy references, which I didn't expect AT ALL, but I freaking LOVE! I'm a dork, so I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. ... show more

  • Helped me learn so much about the music industry!
Love this book! As an up-and-coming artist manager, this book was an easy find that gave me great insight to parts of the business that I wasn’t quite sure about. From different types of deals to the varying ways with which managers and lawyers can help progress an artist, I definitely recommend to anyone that wants to seriously get into the music business. At least as a start to your knowledge, to engage you in conversations with other professionals. ... show more

  • A must-read for new music managers and artists
As a new Manager for @WROSEband, my son's band, and someone with zero background in the music business, this book was a godsend! Mr. Passman has been in the industry for a LONG time, and he breaks things down here for those of us that need a crash course. He provides a pretty useful order to read the book (which is just over 500 pages long in its 10th edition), so you can focus on the sections/chapters that are most relevant to your needs. The only downside to the book is nothing you can't imagine: with industries like music, things are changing quite a bit. Streaming is now how most music is consumed, and that has disrupted the business model quite a bit. There's, for example the advent of Fan Powered Royalties by SoundCloud, which was an ideal at the time he wrote the book (2019), but became a reality in early 2021. But this doesn't take away from the usefulness of the book. This is, without a doubt, a MUST read for anyone entering the business, and for those who have been in it long enough and want to better understand it. ... show more

  • Great book
Way cheaper than buying from the bookstore, it came really fast too. Really good book if you’re trying to learn more about the music business, it goes into detail about a lot of things you need to know about mangers, publishing, streaming, record labels, and more. It’s a good book to buy because it is a boook you should read multiple times ... show more

Just received- some knicks here and there and I bought a new copy not from a second hand retailer. Shipment to USA loc. But anyways... I’m excited to delve into this one - will update when I do!! I skimmed through it, see some math (fml), examples and whole lotta defined concepts - ones I haven’t read about (return privilege, side artist performances, buyouts) ... show more
