Top Amazon Reviews

  • Do not hesitate. It works...and no installation problems.
Size: JKU 4D (Full Length) Color: Black
A friend bought the Spider shade and highly recommended it so when I searched Amazon and came across the Alien shade with free 2 day shipping, and it appeared to be an identical product, I decided to go for it. A few of the negative reviews had me concerned, but I knew with Amazon's easy return policy it was worth a chance. I'm here to say this product is worth it and below I will offer up some installation tips and photos which should alleviate any concerns with respect to some other reviews. First, do as the instructions recommend and unfold it in the sun for half an hour or so. Place it on a sidewalk, driveway or patio for even xtra heat. This will soften up the material and partially smooth out the fold creases. Next, start at the back rather than the front as the instructions state. This allows a bit of give when stretching the bungees around the rear roll cage bars. Some reviewers stated they could barely stretch the bungee cords and one even mentioned his broke while installing the back. My guess is they did the back last and had no slack to play with. Installing the back first solves this issue. Make sure the bungee wraps around so that the ball is behind the seat belt guide assembly attached to the roll bar (see pic below). You will have to stretch the bungee pretty hard but it isn't impossible. After attaching both rear sides the shade will be pulled back too far but that will be corrected next. This next step is easiest with a second person helping. Pull the shade up and over the sound bar and towards the front visor area. Have your helper stand in the cargo bay and grab both sides of the shade that you just connected. He/she should pull it forward stretching those bungees and giving you some room to play with up front. Run a short bungee through the second eyelet from the edge. Pull, stretch and attach to the freedom panel "U" catch. Move to the other side and repeat same procedure. The middle portion has two eyelets close together. Choose the one that is closest to that "U" catch and use it. It will be off center but still works without causing any folds or awkward positioning of the shade. (pics) These front three are designed to be off center from the "U" catches. They allow you to attach the freedom panels while keeping the cords off to the side and out of the way. Next move your way around the Jeep and attach all the remaining bungees. They all go on tight but not difficult. Make sure you position all the balls in a manner that they are out of the way for visor operation and reinstalling hard/soft tops. Replacing Freedom panels. The two eyelets in the center of the shade lined up nearly perfect for the barrel bolts to pass through. Several reviewers complained about this, but I found it required very little fiddling to make it work. As for the flapping sound at higher speeds, if you encounter this the manufacture recommends buying small pieces of felt to stick on the sound bar and prevent that slapping sound. I haven't noticed any annoying flapping sounds, but if I do the fix is simple enough. Starting with the passenger panel you have to maneuver the front lever latch through the opening while pushing the bungee cord out of the way. The procedure is the same for the driver side and it does require some trial and error but they will go through and you can lock them in place. If need be you could also remove the three smaller bungees before replacing the panels and then reattach once complete. The locking mechanism appears to not interfere with the cords so I don't believe there will be any wear and tear to worry about. Just make sure the cords are out of the way before operating the lever. To operate the turn locks you can reach your hand in between the mesh and panel and simply turn them. They are all pretty easy with the exception of the center turn lever on the drivers side rear (located between driver and passenger). You will have to slide the panel in place as best you can and lower it as far as you can while still being able to reach your arm between the mesh and panel. All the while making sure the front lever mechanism is also sliding into place. Once you have it positioned properly you can reach in and push that center-middle turn lock in place . Then lower the whole thing and repeat locking down as you did on the passenger side. This all sounds rather complicated but it only took a few minutes once I figured the best way to go about it. All in all this was an easy install and it looks good. You won't even notice it's there standing at ground level. It is dense enough to block out the harsh, beating sun but still allows light and breeze through to the cabin. No rain test yet, but I imagine it will stop some drops from getting through though not all. Hard top and freedom panels all install without disconnecting any of the bungees. You may have to slide and maneuver some of the cords out of the way but it can be done. Simply put I overcame each of the few negative comments regarding this product. It's a nifty solution to going topless while Jeep'ing during the dog days of summer. Glad I got it. ... show more

  • Shade Game
Size: JK 2D - JKU 4D (Front) Color: Black
A little harder to install with the little cables, but what Jeep accessory doesn’t require some sweat equity! I love this thing, in fact I keep it on all year long and put the tops on over it. Never know when a sunny day is going to appear.

  • Great for shade in Texas heat!
Size: JK 2D - JKU 4D (Front) Color: Green
The media could not be loaded. It was easy to install. Provides a decent amount of shade but still allows for a nice breeze to come through when the top is off. My only grievance is I want to leave it on all the time but I'm unable to get the freedom tops back on since the straps go through the front two latches. So I disconnected those two. Otherwise, good product. might just be user error ... show more

  • My wife texted me a few moments ago and said she was able to get it installed easily, and that it worked great while she was ...
Size: JK 2D (Full Length) Color: Black
I was really excited to get this shade for my Jeep until the moment it arrived. When I heard the doorbell ring I ran to the door and grabbed the package from the UPS driver and quickly retreated into the garage to install it. Little did I know that the next couple hours of my life would be fraught with angst and pain. I quickly but gingerly opened the package only to be accosted by several hundred green pieces of paper which I thought were bugs of some sort- of course I reacted by tossing the box into the air, which only served to shower me with these pseudo caterpillars. Once I was able to compose myself, I opened the packaging to assess the product itself. It appeared well made and durable enough to last a long time so I was relatively releaved, until I read the instructions which are very poorly written and not very clear. I attempted to interpret their meaning and vague dialog, only to become more and more frustrated as I kept snapping myself in the face with the bungee balls. As I was cursing and kicking around the million green paper caterpillars that covered my garage floor, my wife came home and commented on my failure to complete such a seemingly simple task. I took this as a slight against my manhood, so I grabbed a bungee ball and threw it towards her face. It struck her right in her left eye, which promptly swelled shut. As she was screaming in pain, she began to kick and flail around, disturbing the paper caterpillars which I had forgotten about as I was seriously concerned that I was going back to prison. As I became more and more upset that I was being accosted by paper death bugs, I also started to flail around again, this time kicking the small rubber alien toy that is included in the packaging. It struck the sunshade at a velocity that I can only describe as David Beckhamish and ricocheted towards my wife’s face, hitting her in the right eye. At that moment a police officer drove by and heard the commotion and he responded with an urgency and intent to take someone out. At this point my wife had fallen to her knees and was screaming in pain, and I was angrily yelling and kicking all the bugs on the floor- the result of which caused my foot to land squarely into my wife’s knee as the officer approached. Since he witnessed this and assumed I was attacking my wife, he drew his taser to subdue me. He began yelling commands but I was unable to hear him because my ears were clogged with green paper worms. As a result of my non compliance, he was forced to taze me and I am writing this post from a hospital bed while one hand is handcuffed to a gurney. My wife texted me a few moments ago and said she was able to get it installed easily, and that it worked great while she was on her way to the Optomotrist to get fitted for her new glass eye. So I give this 4 stars for quality and ease of installation. I am deducting 1 Star because I got tazed and will most likely spend all summer in Jail. ... show more

  • Good fit, seems sturdy, keeps the sun off my head and seats
Size: JKU 4D (Full Length) Color: Black
Install is pretty straightforward but some of the little bungee balls are hard to install, be patient and prepared to pull those bungees hard. It does what it is supposed to do, for me it is exactly what I want when I run my Jeep topless in the spring and summer. No more burning the back of my legs on the hot leather seats! My only complaint and it’s minor is it’s compatibility with my factory soft top. Because it uses a bungee on the footman loops to secure it to the windshield frame, you have to undo those two bungees if you want to secure the top. Latching the top is a pain with this shade installed but not impossible. I don’t do it too often, but with the weird weather and late rain we had this spring I found myself doing it more than usual. Not a deal breaker for me, but something I didn’t know before I purchased it. ... show more
