  • Happy with it so far.
Size: 100 patterns Style: Drum Machine
A couple of years ago, I tried sequencing some of my hardware synths using my Novation Circuit. I used two of the four MIDI channels for synth sequencing, and the other two to sequence the Circuit's internal drums. Fast forward to late last year, I got a Novation Launchpad MK3 to use as a sequencer. Since the Launchpad has no internal sounds, I needed a drum machine. I bought an IK Multimedia UNO Drum, which worked fine for a couple of months and suddenly started frying power supplies (batteries and USB wall chargers). I got this SR-16 to replace the UNO Drum. I've had it for a few weeks and am happy with it thus far. The SR-16 comes with it's own power supply, which I am grateful for. The portability of batteries is nice but for equipment like this, I feel constant power from a "wall wart" is much more reliable. The unit itself is a good size; it, along with the Launchpad and hardware synths are piled up on a computer desk in a "DAWless" setup, so space is at a premium. The SR-16 is small enough to very comfortably fit on the desk, yet the onboard controls don't feel excessively small or difficult to access. In this setup, the Launchpad is my master MIDI clock in addition to sending note data, so my SR-16 is just playing drum hits as a slave unit. So, I can't comment about this unit's internal sequencer or other features regarding it's sequencer since I'm not utilizing them. I may do just that later on, if I ever get around to dusting my guitars off and getting back into playing guitar. As for drum sounds, I'm pleasantly surprised. I figured the SR-16 would just have a bunch of copies of the same drum hits with subtle changes (i.e. "Snare 01, Snare 02, Tom 01, Tom 02", etc.). To an extent, that statement is true. But the SR-16 shows it's age here by coming with a couple of cheat sheets. One sheet is a table of all the drum hits, specifically their names. The names of the hits also give a very brief description of what the hit will sound like. Reading the names alone, you'll see that there's a good variety of drum tones to be had in this unit, from more natural hits, to heavily edited hits, to full on electronic hits. Some of the hit names describe effects assigned to them, whereas some describe the intended genre of music the hit was designed for. This leads into my favorite feature of the SR-16: Creating custom drum kits. You can save your custom setups as well, which is very handy and helpful for me, since I'm very spontaneous about my DAWless jamming. I prefer to turn the equipment on and just start punching in note data on the Launchpad to hear what happens to the synths I send the data to. Being able to have a drum set that I know well since I'm the one that compiled it eliminates unwanted setup time, and eliminates guesswork about the set. I do see that you can create your own sequences but again, I'm not utilizing this feature in my current setup. All in all, I'm again quite happy with the SR-16. While I'm only using a fraction of it's potential, I'm happy it's such a flexible and feature packed unit; I have room to grow with this unit, but even if I always just sequence it off my Launchpad, it does so very well. ... show more

  • Great classic drum machine.
Size: 100 patterns Style: Drum Machine
Sure the SR-18 sounds a bit more real, but when you know how to use the SR-16 to its fullest potential and use some high quality reverb you'd be amazed at the results you can get. When you add some more instruments, then it can really sound real. The nice thing about the SR-16 is it has both modern and vintage drum sounds as well as some electronic 1980s type drum sounds (yes, it has the almighty cowbell to). It has tight modern drums that were recorded in a top quality studio environment but also has some that sound more like the ones I used to mix in live sound as well as some fantastic hand claps and various other sounds. Some snare samples even have a small amount of reflection from the left. They kept the imperfections on some samples to give it a bit of extra character. The build quality isn't amazing but isn't bad. It is made out of plastic unlike other gear but doesn't creek at all or seem to bend. It feels fairly sturdy and is heavy enough to the point where it never slides around with heavy cables pulling on it which is nice. The reliability of these units has been proven over the past 20 years to and the unit never gets warm even after several hours of use. The pads on the other hand are disappointing. The built-in velocity sensitivity is pretty much useless and the pads are almost flush with the face of the unit which makes fast paced finger drumming sessions a bit challenging at times. They raised the pads on the newer model to address that issue but if you plan on doing epic finger drumming sessions on the SR-16 I recommend hooking up a unit with good velocity sensitive pads and using it as a MIDI controller for the SR-16. The record mode on the SR-16 is bizarre to which they also addressed in the newer version. The SR-16 has no record button and requires you to set it up in a certain way and do some menu browsing before recording. When you finally get there, it doesn't wait till you start playing before recording. It doesn't start recording automatically at all. You need to watch the numbers on the screen as the unit loops. Also, getting a seamless loop is almost impossible because it wants you to have computer precision and does not automatically quantize either. I recommend finger drumming or hooking it up to another unit, perhaps electric drums, and recording though a mixing console and quantizing later though a different unit or software. The display isn't back-lit either which they also fixed with the newer model so if you want to see the screen of the SR-16 in the dark, bring a lamp with you. Overall, this is a nice drum machine that has played a part in the music you've listened to over the past 20 years or so. Most people have probably listened to a recording of their favorite band without realizing that the "drummer" was actually the SR-16, the new Ben Timely. If you want a classic and versatile drum machine, this is a good option. I love mine. The old tape backup system is a joy as well. ... show more

  • Glad this is still in Production.

This is not my first Drum machine, but it's Definitely my last. This Machine is truly a writers best friend. When I'm putting together a music track (I play Keyboards/Guitar but, I can't play drums to save my life) I can slow the tempo down and play as slow as I need to. I also love the Quantize feature to keep my timing on the beat I also like that I can turn the Quantize feature off so I can give my fills a Human feel, and not mechanical. I use the controlled volume for Programing regular patterns, and switch to Velocity for programming fills, so I can use Dynamics for expression. I also love the ease of Operation of this Machine. I have a BOSS-864 which has some kind of Rhythm machine but, I never bothered to learn how to use that one. I read a review somewhere that said, this machine is good for 80's Hair Metal Bands well, while that's true, there is such a huge selection sounds you can use, and this machine can do styles like, Adult Contemporary, Pop/Country. For those who think Drum Machines are for Dance Music, This machine was used on (And I'm not making a Nickel on this Statement) the Song "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as "Shine" by Collective Soul. My only gripe is, Im not sure if there is a Drum Machine out there that has figured out, how to make a Roll fill not sound like a kids Toy Machine Gun. I had an Alesis SR-16 for 25 years, and it served me well. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the display window on mine anymore, unless I had a Flashlight shining on the display window. I had wanted to get mine fixed but, anyone I came in contact with said, it would be more cost effective to replace the machine, rather than repair it. I wish I knew where I could send my old one, so someone could refurbish it. Looks like I'll be retiring my old one to the electronics pile at the Local Dump. ... show more
