  • Great kit for home practicing and learning drums
Style: 2nd Generation Size: Drum set
I think this is probably the best budget kit available on Amazon. This kit has several HUGE advantages and very few relatively minor issues as far as I was able to notice. Pros: 1) High quality construction 2) Very good drum module with many features 3) A metronome with 3 different sounds to select from - this is HUGE plus! It is also very robust, you do not need to buy any external metronome. 4) Bluetooth connectivity works like a charm! 5) The module has a holder for phone or tablet, very convenient 6) The module allows you to change/assign midi codes for each item in the kit - this is HUGE! 7) The module has USB-B midi port, you can use to connect your iPad and leverage on midi integration. This is very useful for games and learning (among other things). 8) Additional parts are available for purchasing Cons: 1) Included assembly instruction guide is useless. It is impossible to understand anything there. I suggest to watch youtube video "Alesis Nitro Max Mesh Kit setup guide", it should help, but please allocate at least one hour for assembly. 2) The kit does not include audio and USB adapters/cables to connect your headphones and tablets (I will list all the additional cables you need below) 3) The module does not have standard midi ports, it only offers midi connectivity via USB. Note, only midi can be sent via USB, no audio. For audio connectivity you need to use bluetooth or 3.5mm audio cable. 4) Tom-2 has incorrect midi code, you will need to change it in the settings of the module from 45 (low tom) to 47 (low-mid tom) 5) User manual for the module is not included, you need to download it from the manufacturer web site 6) Audio sound is relatively weak, you may need to buy mini preamp... I am still testing a few options here. This is optional though. 7) The electric kit is not completely silent though, people around will hear you hitting toms with sticks. You can buy dumpers for your drumsticks, but dumpers can reduce the noise, not eliminate it. Expansion Pack: I highly suggest to purchase expansion pack from the Alesis, it is called Alesis Drums Nitro Max Expansion Pack. Headphones: You have probably purchased this kit to practice silently using headphones. If you want to teach your child, you may need two pairs of headphones that can be connected to each other, so you can hear your child playing. I picked OneOdio Over Ear Headphone, Wired version. Headphones come with two cords, black (3.5), and red (1/4). You only need the red cord. However, you will need to also buy 1/4 Female Stereo to 2 X 1/4 Male Mono Y Splitter since the module has two 1/4 female mono jacks for left and right channels. For midi connectivity with iPad (mine has lighting connector and headphones jack) you may need: 1) USB A Male to USB B Male Cable 2) Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter 3) I like to use mobile application X Drum - 3D & AR, it has very good midi integration (make sure to change midi code for tom 2 as listed above) For iPad audio connectivity: 1) Bluetooth can be used 2) Instead I am using 3.5mm stereo male to male Audio Cable to connect module with iPad through iPad headphones jack. My summary and conclusion: I like this kit, and to my opinion it is worth its price. ... show more

  • Great value!
Style: 1st Generation Size: Drum set
Obviously this isn't a high end piece of equipment. But, for the price, definitely 5 stars. Came in perfect condition. Everything functioning as intended. A pretty large bank of sounds for such a cheap kit. Drums are responsive and the kick is especially sturdy and has good response. For peeps in an apartment, like me, you can't go wrong with this kit. Also, seems like you could record pretty easily with this thing. There are a couples downsides (but because of price, I still think 5 stars): as others have noted, the rims are really high. Even experienced drummers will have to discipline themselves with this to not accidentally rim-shot. Since it sits relatively low (and I'm only 5'6") it helps with the rim-shot issue a little bit. Also, the high hat pedal is not as responsive as I would like. You simply cannot hit it will closed then open to reverberate. It will make a closed sound or open sound--you cannot get both in a single hit, which pretty much eliminates any jazz drumming. Perhaps I just have a faulty hi hat pedal, because it also just tweeks out and makes a static sound sometimes when opening and closing repeatedly. Overall, a little disappointed with the hi hat sounds in general too. Lastly, the sound output is very very weak. If you plan on plugging in headphones, max volume does not even come close to drowning out the sound of you actually hitting the drums. I plugged into a g-boom boombox style speaker--much quieter than the headphones. Definitely consider getting an amp to plug into, even if you just want to use headphones, run the sound through the amp into the headphones. That's it. Despite the things I mentioned, this is still very satisfying to practice on and potentially record. ... show more

  • Great set for the price.
Style: 1st Generation Size: Drum set
First off let me say the set really is a good bargain set. If your just needing something at home you can practice on without driving the family & neighbors crazy, & without hurting the wallet much, it’s perfect... that being said, I do have a few things I think could’ve been done a bit better even on a bargain class drum set. 1) I wish the module put out louder volume... I’ve tried different headsets and speakers but unless you’re willing to spend another $150 on a high class pair of headphones or a cheap subwoofer, any ambient noise will make it hard to hear the kick, and soft snare notes. 2) The “Bass Drum” is so small and light you will constantly be stopping to pull it back every 2 to 3 kicks. It moves if a light breeze hits it. (2A:You can remedy this a bit if you put down a place mat or rug to put the set on, and use some Velcro to hold in place) (2B: Or like me you can get a used bass drum from a higher class set that has a little weight plus the typical bar-stands on it. Most individual drums can plug into any module that uses 1/4” aux cables) 3) I also wish the high hat control was a little heavier duty and better built 3A: the amazing thing is the Alesis nitro module does allow you to assign any of the 256 different drum voices to whichever piece you want. Meaning you can assign the same kick sound to both the bass drum and the HH-Control Pedal giving you a double kick ability without having to spend the kind of money it takes to get sets that come with double kicks as standard. (3B: but there’s a minor issue when using the HH control for double kick that comes from the cheap/light build of the pedal... now & then When you are playing with the HH pedal as a kick it will make a crack noise like shutting a highhat and kicking bass at same time. And it still acts as open/close function for the High Hat even when you’ve assigned the kick voice to it. So you have to time hitting your high hat to always be alternating with using the pedal as kick. If you do both simultaneously your high hat will sound like your hitting it while wide open. Summary: all in all... the fact that for less than $500 you can get a complete electronic drum set that comes with all mesh heads (excluding bass drum) and feels and sounds pretty dang good; Is amazing. It’d be great for your kids who are just starting their drum journey, (and great for parents as it is 1,000xs quieter than a traditional acoustic set) but also great for people like me who started playing 25years ago. But after becoming a husband & father, your spouse finally got you to put the set in storage. Then your church asks you to join the worship team and you need a way to practice (without getting a divorce) lol. It’s a cheap and easy fix that your spouse (& neighbors) will appreciate. ... show more
