  • Not yet perfect, but Airthings team are listening
Update 6/7/2018 I was contacted by a the Airthings team: - My wave device datas was sent to the cloud, but the App delete all the datas when the wave was disassociated from the phone. In future they will add a warning message. - Airthings cloud have backup! Airthings team was able to restored my data. - The wave in fact use flash memory, just a bug in the firmware is responsible for the lost of data when the power is lost... and bug can be fixed! Airthings team was very professional handling my concern, my rating is updated. Previous review: ------ I own this device for 3 months now. I already own the "Corentium Home Radon Detector by Airthings" that works perfectly. I needed to see an history of the radon level over a year, that was the main usage of the Wave. My problem is, after 3 months I accidentally deleted the bluetooth configuration on my iPhone. To restored the connection I at some point removed the Wave battery. And now I lost all the 3 months of history. The advertisement say the device can store more than a year of mesure, they say the "mandatory" web cloud store a copy of all the history, but still everything is gone. The hot line didn't provide explanation, they just say: "As mentioned on my previous email, if batteries are removed, all data done after the last sync will be deleted - this will cause permanent loss of data in the gaps aforementioned. This also applies if the device was reset, altered (e.g. removing the Bluetooth configuration) or modified improperly." I was using the iPhone App with an internet connection often during the 3 months. and never get any warning that my data is not synchronized. The history was visible in the app. What I understand now is the iPhone upload and remove the data from the device and push the data to the cloud only after fews days. You do not have any feedback, and because you see the data on your device, that does not indicate it is present in the cloud, Probably some bug prevent the data to be push, and the iPhone Apps does not have any problem to delete the data that was locally stored, without asking you first. For a device that does not connect directly to the cloud (need to have a direct bluetooth connection, no HomeKit) I do not really see the importance of a cloud storage. if you are out of home you can only access the previous data, the one you already have on your phone. (at the time of the review the Airthings Hub is just announced). Wave should not remove the device data until the sync with the cloud is confirmed, and the App should not remove any data from the phone without asking permission/warning you first. The choice to store data in the device in RAM instead of flash memory is also arguable. That seem a lot of design choice or implementation that does not seem concern by the safety of user data. To finish by a positive note, the device hardware look nice. The accuracy seem correct. Will be good with flash memory, and/or an App that respect our data, and will be perfect with also HomeKit support. ... show more

  • So far so good
Just installed the Airthings Wave Radon Detector. I bought this because radon is an issue where I live and we had our basement mitigated by sealing off cracks and covering crawlspace area with radon-reducing material. A radon mitigating company performed all the work. At the time we were able to get our radon level in the basement to 4, right at the limit. Since that time we have had our basement finished and I want to make sure the radon levels haven't gone up and hopefully went down. I have ordered a traditional radon test for our finished area but wanted a long-term radon detector for our unfinished area that has the crawl space and a drain for the HVAC. The Airthings Wave radon detector fit my needs for long-term detection with the ability to see the changes via a mobile phone or iPad. Setup was very easy and I was able to mount the Airthings on a larger wood beam/frame in the basement. Mounting was easy with an electric drill to put the screw into the wood so it is secure. The Wave simply attaches to the mounting base via a magnet. One I pulled the plastic away from the battery the Wave turned on and I was ready to pair the device to my phone. I rant through the steps on my Iphone through the Airthings app. The first time I tried to pair it did not succeed, but it did the 2nd time. After an hour the Wave gave me my initial reading that showed radon levels were low and in the good air quality rating. I will leave the Wave running for a few more days and then I will check the readings again. The Wave also shows the humidity level and temperature in my basement as those can change radon levels. I'm looking forward to seeing how the radon levels go up or down depending on weather and other variables. What is nice is you can take the Wave off the base and move it to another room to test for a few days, if needed. It would be nice to have the Wave use wireless rather than Bluetooth as the Bluetooth on the Wave must be low powered as it does not reach very far. I have to go into the basement to check the readings on my phone. I'm guessing they don't use wireless as that would have battery implications so the trade-off is a low powered Bluetooth connection. You can also go up to the Wave and move your hand in front of it and it will show a color on the "ring" that says how the radon level is, green for good, yellow for caution, and red for high radon. I will provide an update to my review as time goes by. ... show more
