  • A great gun, useful for for the fine artist
This is a great gun, particularly for people who don't want to deal with the heavier spray guns that use larger connections and hoses. I have quite a few Iwata guns, ranging from a simple Revolution right through to the Custom Microns. I purchased this because I wanted something that was capable of spraying thicker paint and slightly larger volumes, but not up to the range of a proper HVLP or LVLP gun like the RG-3. (For the record, I own an RG-3 and LPH-80, both of which are great in their own right). I'm using this for fine art spraying, although I also do modeling with some of my other Iwata guns. As other reviewers have noted, this Japanese import version comes without the pistol grip and moisture trap. Using water based paint, I'm not too concerned with the moisture trap, but the pistol grip is VERY useful. I would order one separately. Being used to double action airbrushes, I was initially skeptical if I would like this gun. When it first arrived the fan spray nozzle was not working well. I soaked it in acetone overnight, as I figured one of the air ports was clogged. Once cleaned, it was working nicely. The cup is a decent size, the gun has a feeling of solidity and heft (but not at the level of a larger spray gun). It is easy to maneuver, and very responsive. The fan spray pattern is a dream for my application, which is laying down broad layers of paint and acrylic medium on paintings. I find the MAC valve to be useful on all sorts of guns, albeit I have not tried to do detail work with this gun as of yet. One of the great things is that I can use this gun with my standard Iwata hoses and quick disconnects. I'm running this with a Silentaire 50-D-AL compressor, which has 2.1 CFM on a 2.2 gallon tank. The gun pushes a fair bit of air, although not as much as the RG-3. If you were patient you could use it with a smaller compressor. I'd like to have a bit more capacity in my tank, to be honest. Just about the only negative is that the gun doesn't fit well in standard airbrush holders. I've knocked it onto the floor twice (no damage, thankfully) through bumping it, as a result. Iwata has a nice magnetic holder with adjustable arms that would be great for this gun. ... show more

  • Iwata Quality & Fast
First I was a bit leery ordering this based on the product description not including the Iwata name. It is indeed an Iwata HP-TH and the seller should correct it as it may be costing them sales. This is the import version of the HP-TH and while it isn't expressly stated I presume it lacks the US warranty due to the price difference. It comes with both the round & the fan cap and the nozzle wrench. It does not include the grip filter like the U.S. version. You can pick up a combination filter & regulator for less than the filter by itself which is far more useful than just the filter. It includes English instructions which are available on the website regardless. It comes in a quality, fitted foam, plastic case, not the fancy aluminum one that is often seen elsewhere. For the savings of $215, it could have shipped in a bag for all I care. When it's all assembled, it's not like you can put it back in the case anyway. The seller at my time of purchase was Yubitan. I ordered it on a Sunday and opted for the expedited shipping which was $9 or less. According to Amazon it was to arrive by Friday from Japan. I had my doubts and with all the winter weather delays I didn't give it much thought. It in fact arrived by Thursday beating the prediction by one day. The airbrush is typical first rate Iwata quality. You'd be hard pressed to find a manufacturing defect regardless but in the rare event should something happen, I could buy a replacement and have one for spare parts for the cost of the US version. I also purchased the optional grip which makes it more ergonomic to use, much more so than having to grip the optional filter. ... show more

  • Doesn't do absolutely everything, but absolutely the best at what it does.
This not a "one size fits all" brush, as it can't do lines narrower than a blunted wood pencil, however for everything other than small freehand detail work it is brilliant. I'm using it as a modeler, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to other modelers, as priming, base coating, and clear coating are super-efficient with this brush. It is THE BEST for broad coverage, and If you don't need to do small freehand stuff, this would be the only airbrush you'll ever need. I have several other airbrushes: an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS, a Badger SOTAR, a Paache VL, and a Paasche H. Despite being a paint firehose (it is basically a micro-HVLP gun), this brush has the best atomization out of any of them except the SOTAR. The spray pattern has a wider range than any of them: It can't do fine lines, but does general and broad coverage SO MUCH BETTER than any of the others. It is also very easy to clean, even beating out the H in that regard despite being an "internal mix" brush. It is much more forgiving of thicker paints and paints with large pigment particles. Great for spraying metals, pearls, craft paints, and unthinned primers. I would very much reccomend this to any modeler. Between this and the SOTAR I can do pretty much anything, and don't need any of my other brushes anymore (though I still love my HP-CS). If I didn't have a need for freehand fine detail, I would only need this brush. For armor, aircraft, car, and Naval modelers this will be the best and likely only brush you will ever need. For figure, creature, or dinosaur modelers, this will do 60-90% of what you need better than any regular AB. For AB newbies in either category, this will be easier and more forgiving to use than almost any other airbrush (at the cost of not teaching you much that will carry over to other ABs). It does have some downsides (apart from not being able to do fine lines). It requires more CFM than a normal brush (horsepower is a meaningless compressor stat: you want to look at max pressure and CFM), and thus some of the smaller dedicated AB compressors won't be able to power it. You can get away with less than the recommended CFM (my AB compressor only puts out about 2/3 the "required" amount, and it still works well enough for me to say all the above), but it definitely can't run on as little as an ordinary brush can. It eats paint FAST when doing broad coverage spraying, so it's a good idea to buy the larger color cup for the Kustom TR (Iwata part # 10707) separately and replace the TH's cup with that. Because of the way the trigger works (and not requiring you to pay as much attention to your thinning), skills learned on this brush won't transfer to regular double-action brushes. Without the optional pistol grip accessory, it requires an oddball grip to use. Not uncomfortable or difficult IMO, but definitely weird. I actually end up bracing my index finger against the color up on top of the brush so I can pull the trigger with my ring finger. On balance however it is still fantastic, and probably the single best and most useful brush I own. You'll need a 13mm crescent wrench and a 0.5x3.0mm flat head screwdriver to be able to fully dissemble the brush, which are not included. You won't need to do that often at all though, as flushing or removing the needle & nozzle will be the most you'll need to do 99% of the time. ... show more
