  • Welcome addition to the Power series
Dave Hill does us a great favor by compiling loads of info on the great sw that is Live, in addition to providing working methods and offering tips to give any Live user a better understanding of their tool. Although the Live manual itself is pretty good when comparing to other similar products, but having an actual (power) user giving you tips and explanations is invaluable. The book is very readable and I like the fact that the author has valuable opinions on various aspects of working with audio in a DAW environment. I would hate to read a book on a product that is nothing but a revamped version of the manual. Dave does a great job here with presenting material on an informative basis as well as giving you his own personal take on it. I'm hoping that in the next version (covering Live 3.0 perhaps) that some topics get a bit more in depth treatment. Topics such as Warp Markers, more tips on recording into Live, and I'd like to see a bit more depth on how to use Live in a prodution environment, ala a typical scenario in getting a finished piece using audio samples, your own loops, etc. Five stars for this book not only because of its content, but also because there is nothing else out there. ... show more

  • A great companion to the manual
I give this book 5 stars partly due to the fact that the program itself is so damn good, any book written about is probably going to be useful. That said I was glad to find that this book went one step beyond the manual. It called out specific examples of things you could (and should) try. Once you experiment with some of the tips in the book, the "light" is sure to go off in your head. I will admit I am not the most talented song writer in the world, but this book and application sure make me sound a lot better then I would be otherwise. I've already pre-ordered by my copy of Live Power 4! ... show more

  • a great compliment to a great program
if u own the program u should own this book as well, as it provides a great overview as well as many inspiring ways to use the program, the manual for the program is good but i find this book to cover alot more ground in practically every senario with this program. i am new to the program but i found myself rapidly understanding the program along with its possibilties, obviosly beginners will get the most out of it but so will the people that are experineced with it. plus i really like how the author will answer peoples questions about the both the book and the program in the abelton user forum in addition to a well written book. ... show more

  • Three thumbs up...
This is an excellent reference to an excellent and indispensible application. I have been using the incredible Live 2 program for some months; and thought I had it fairly well figured out. But I have already learned new tips and tricks from Mr Hill's excellent book. Live doesn't come with a printed manual so if you're like me and need something to prop up on your stomach to read before going to sleep each night, you can't do better than this. The book has been edited by the Ableton team who have vetted the information, and is very up to date (as of Sept 2003)... ... show more

  • Live and kicking/thanks to this book
Thanks to this new book, Live has quickly become my main application/instrument. The author's musical knowledge, humorous tone and personal insight makes this an enjoyable read. If your the type who likes to wing it without a manual I highly suggest you stop and take a look. There are a lot of useful tips that will improve your sampling/looping chops. I highly recommend this book. Gotta go, there's music to make!!! ... show more
