I think it would be a great gift for any 4th or 5th grader moving on to middle school. There is so much practical information, hypothetical situations (with good solutions) and suggestions on all kinds of kid relevant middle school topics. I couldn't think of a topic that wasn't covered. The book itself is written in a style that makes it easy to read. Information is provided in short bursts making it a quick and easy to understand read. It's published by American Girl. I know American Girl dolls, accessories magazine and crafts are still very hot with the younger girls. I also assume older girls still love their dolls/memorabilia as memories and collectibles. Knowing that this book is part of that tradition might provided a nice bridge for them. Every little girl in my life will get a copy of this book before they make the big and sometimes scary transition to middle school. I would also suggest that parents take a glance at the book. I believe that would help to foster some good conversation about what to expect in middle school, help alleviate worries and let your daughter know she can always talk to you about Middle School concerns. Now what do we do about the boys out there. Has anyone seen a similar book written for them? I'll have to research a little more. ... show more

I bought this book for my tween because she is about to start Middle School in a few weeks. She loves it, has almpst finished it and even read some outloud to her bestfriend who is sadly going to a different school. I love all the books I have bought by this publishing company so far and highly recommend it. Anyone that has a kiddo, niece, goddaughter, or even a good friends kid... My daughter is assuming it is preparing her for middle school but given that she have not entered middle school as yet, she is not sure if the book actually accurate as to what it is intended for. She would have to test the ideology of it's content and for that reason she is giving it four stars.

Can't tell say how many parents of 11 year olds I've met who say, "you won't believe this, but the American Girl doll company publishes these fantastic books...." They've gotten amazing psychologists and writers to create these books. The voice is just perfect for young girls starting puberty, experiencing social changes in themselves and friends, and the advice is always spot on, in a time of life that can be bewildering. My almost 11 year old loves reading all these american girl guides. They're always fun, interesting and good for review again and again. We also know the body book for younger girls which she refers back to every other month or so. That one also great and not too much info for a young girl but enough to make sure she understands what her body needs and how it's growing. ... show more
