Description

The best investment guide money can buy, with more than 1.5 million copies sold, now fully revised and updated. Today's stock market is not for the faint of heart. At a time of frightening volatility, what is the average investor to do? The answer: Turn to Burton G. Malkiel's advice in his reassuring, authoritative, gimmick-free, and perennially best-selling guide to investing. Long established as the first book to purchase before starting a portfolio or 401(k), A Random Walk Down Wall Street now features new material on "tax-loss harvesting", the crown jewel of tax management; the current bitcoin bubble; and automated investment advisers; as well as a brand-new chapter on factor investing and risk parity. And as always, Malkiel's core insights - on stocks and bonds, as well as real estate investment trusts, home ownership, and tangible assets like gold and collectibles - along with the book's classic life-cycle guide to investing, will help restore confidence and composure to anyone seeking a calm route through today's financial markets. • Simple, sane, time-tested advice
There are any number of authors and hucksters who will sell you a system that will guarantee you can beat the market. Curiously, though, few of them stick round for very long. Remember the big day trading frenzy of the 1990s? A lot of people blew all their savings on that one. I knew a lawyer who quit his job and managed to lose his savings, his house, and a good chunk of his in-laws' money with that guaranteed money maker. You can buy books that will tell you how to trade commodities, how to play the options market, why you should buy/sell gold... these methods and their hawkers come and go. And yet, "A Random Walk" is still in print almost 40 years after it was first published. Malkiel's advice seems almost old fashioned now, but when he first published this book, it was revolutionary. It was the first book for the non-professional investor that used modern portfolio theory to come up with a low-risk strategy for long term growth and security that any investor could follow. It debunked fads, and showed the wisdom of strategies that are now commonly accepted. He promoted mutual finds over individual stocks, and later, index funds over narrower investments. He demonstrated how investing for value outperformed growth over the long run, and told people why they should shift from equity investment to debt (bonds) as they grew older. 39 years after its first publication, this still remains the only book the average person needs to guide their investment strategy. You won't get rich quick following the advice here, but you'll grow your savings in a safe way, and make sure you can provide for yourself through the future. ... show more

  • The only guide you need to understanding basic investing.
This book is an excellent first book for the new investor. It basically illustrates why indexing, reinvesting dividends and passive investing will beat 98% of amateur and pro traders. This should be everyone's first book. While "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" is the most often recommended, I think reading Reminiscences first can ruin you with the hope of making millions all on your own, while missing out on the steady growth of a simple passive approach. ... show more

  • Good book if you have some background.
I was recommended this book as a introduction to investing. While it was a very helpful book, the author does assume that you have some knowledge in stocks and investing, so if you are a true newbie to everything at least half of the book will flow right over your head. I would recommend you watch some YouTube videos to get a general idea before picking up this book. As for the Amazon piece, there was no damage to the book and everything was on time. ... show more

  • Required reading
Anyone who has any vested interest in the market should read this book. No trendy notions, no get rich quick ideas. Just a well written primer on investing. Complex theoretical and technical ideas are condensed to easily understood ideas w/o dilution of the message. The author uses real life historical events to illustrate the message being conveyed. While written nearly 40 yrs ago, the material is as relevant as ever. In fact, maybe even more relevant due to all of the static that is promulgated as investment "advice", that only serves to promote the "experts" own financial accumulation. The only agenda that Dr Malkiel has is the conveyance of solid investment knowledge. ... show more

  • Don't buy the Kindle version.
Although it says the Kindle version was published in 2019, they must have published the original, 2006 version. Lots of out-of-date information. Enough has changed over the years that some of the arguments the author makes may no longer be valid.

Said it was hardcover. It is not.

  • Stocks on audio books is perfect!
I'm a newbie to stock market investment and found this audio book very informative and easier to understand than other books I've read. Listening to a book about stocks made it easier for me to understand since I can hit repeat over and over during my one and a half hour commute home from work.

  • Not the latest edition
The Good The audiobook arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. The cd played well from my computer but would not transfer to my iPhone so I will listen to it in my car. The narration was fine and the information is good. The Bad This is not the latest edition. This edition is copyrighted 2007. The latest edition is copyrighted 2019. I encourage you to purchase the latest edition. ... show more
