A Caldecott Honor classic that celebrates friendship and new experiences-back in print on its 40th anniversary One afternoon late in August, before the start of a new school year, Jay finds Cricket. Cricket fits just right in small spaces-like under a tea strainer or in Jay's very own pocket-and Cricket makes the most exciting sounds. But what happens when it's time to go back to school? • country story
Jay is a young man who enjoys his country life. In the picture book we join his as he explores the country side where he lives. On his adventures he finds a cricket and decides to keep him. He has to start school soon and decides to take him to class with him. The cricket starts to make his noise and the teacher lets Jay share the cricket for show and tell. The book showed that even bugs can be good pets. It was a little long for a picture book and kids might have a hard time sitting still through the whole story. I would recommend this book for kids ages 6-10. Kids who enjoy country life will identify well with the main character, Jay ... show more

  • Great Imagery - Beautiful Story for Young Readers
This delightful tale tells the story of Jay, a young boy. This book covers six days of Jay's life. We first see him bringing in the cows from the field. Five days later we have the opportunity to journey with him to his first day of school. This book presents many themes to its readers: appreciation of nature, making friends and staying true to who you are. The imagery presented by the author is fantastically detailed. The illustrations are done in a classic, stamp-like style causing children to look deep within the pages. Although the illustrations are simple the fact that they are slightly disjointed adds an entirely new element to the book. It is relatively long; however I think children will stay tuned in for the entire story. I recommend adding this book to your classroom or home library. It is brilliantly written and chock full of great lessons. I rank this 5 out of 5 for the following reasons: ~ Interesting, dimensional illustrations. ~ A well written, highly detailed story. ~ Wonderful theme with many age-appropriate lessons. ~ Easy to read font. I have absolutely no complaints about this book. I read it for the first time for the purposes of this review and fell in love instantly. It is full of information, very age-appropriate and it is written at an elevated level. Activities to do in the Classroom: 1. Art - Create a stamped illustration for a story the child has written. Use potato stamps to create similar pictures, after use black marker to draw in detail. 2. Writing - Discuss imagery and do a writing prompt based on your own walk. This book has beautiful imagery - something you do not see often in children's literature. This book can help your children when learning creative writing. 3. Show and Tell- Encourage your children to bring in items for show and tell. Explain, like it does in the book, that people show and tell items they love. 4. Geography - Jay is helping his family bring in the cows - he is only 6. Talk about children and the work they perform in different places. Let the kids share what chores they help with at home. 5. Mathematics - During the story we see Jay pick up many items on his walk use the items to create a mathematical unit on addition and subtraction. You can create a felt pocket and have items similar to those in the story. ... show more
