Description

An Essential Household Reference…Revised and Updated With our culture’s growing interest in organic foods and healthy eating, it is important to understand what food labels mean and to learn how to read between the lines. This completely revised and updated edition of A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives gives you the facts about the safety and side effects of more than 12,000 ingredients–such as preservatives, food-tainting pesticides, and animal drugs–that end up in food as a result of processing and curing. It tells you what’s safe and what you should leave on the grocery-store shelves. In addition to updated entries that cover the latest medical and scientific research on substances such as food enhancers and preservatives, this must- have guide includes more than 650 new chemicals now commonly used in food. You’ll also find information on modern food-production technologies such as bovine growth hormone and genetically engineered vegetables. Alphabetically organized, cross-referenced, and written in everyday language, this is a precise tool for understanding food labels and knowing which products are best to bring home to your family. • A good book to have on hand
This book has some of the best definitions for nasty chemicals used as food additives.

  • My Key Reference Book for Food Additives
I've used Ms. Ruth's book for over 4 years now. I have a small handful of food additive guides, but this book is head-and-shoulders over the others. It is well written and very organized. I am constantly referring to the "Dictionary" when researching material for my podcast "Food Labels Revealed." Sadly, the most recent edition is 2009, so, at this time, with hundreds of new additives showing up in foods every year, it's outdated. I wish some enterprising expert would create a new and comprehensive guide. ... show more

  • Must have for informed consumers
As a pharmacy tech I hate hearing people tell me how terrible ingredients in their food are. By law ingredients on labels must be the true scientific name. Example: Tocapherol= Vitamin E, Cholecalcipherol= Vitamin D3 and Ascorbic Acid is Vitamin C. This book lets you know what the ingredients are and what they do. Many of the ingredients that you see are all natural plant powders and such that make your food texture how you like it and keep your food from destabilizing or spoiling in a couple days. unfortunately they can't' just say the common name for them as science is very specific and if they didn't people would complain about that. ... show more

  • valuable go to book
This book of food additives is a must have for everyone who wants to know what pesky additives are lurking in our foods. It's alphabetical. Just find the additive on your food package and quickly and easily look it up in this book for a very detailed, informative description of what the additive is and it's purpose. It helps me to determine what is safe for my family to consume and what is not. I highly recommend this book for educated food consumers. ... show more
