  • This actually works really well (at least w/ a dualshock 4).
I am using this on my NES classic. The included controller has a laughable cable included with it, so this is the perfect way to not have to be tethered to a cable while playing your classic games. Super happy.

  • Does not fully support modern controllers
I have thoroughly tested this on a SNES Super Nintendo Mini aka SNES Classic. I tried the 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller, and Xbox One Controller, and a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. My main point: if you read nothing more: this retro receiver doesn't work as well as hoped, and the support service appears unwilling to correct the problems. Here are my findings: For the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller paired with the retro receiver, there was terrible lag. Making Mario jump results in a second or half second delay, causing missed jumps and dead Marios. It's pretty terrible. This controller linked to the retro receiver also suffers from the next problem... For the SN30 Pro, it works pretty good out of the box for SNES games. The same is true for the Xbox Controller. However, there is one major problem: you cannot use the right analog stick or L3/R3 buttons of these modern controllers via this retro receiver on your SNES mini. This is fine if you are only using it for SNES games. But, if you perhaps "altered" your SNES mini and have some other games on it, using a program called RetroArch, you will be disappointed. For example, RetroArch allows you to map and use a right analog stick, and while both of these controllers have right analogs, the retro receiver will not map it or accept the signal for it. This is quite annoying. Support says it is by design. However, with the 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller ONLY, there is a way to make the right analog work, which involves downgrading its firmware to an early beta version. But this trick ONLY works with an SN30 and no other controller. And if you accidentally bump the retro receiver's Bluetooth sync button, then it will forget your controller, and you'll have to upgrade the firmware to resync it, then downgrade it again to use the right analog stick. And with this solution, there is no swapping to other Bluetooth controllers at will, since you'd have to upgrade the firmware again to sync it, and if you attempt to then downgrade the firmware to then hope for the right analog to work, you'll be disappointed. Again, this trick only works with the SN30 Pro, and even with that, you have to also downgrade the SN30 Pro's firmware as well. This is a terrible. This clunky workaround to use the right analog is detailed on reddit. Google for details using the following: "8bitdo SN30 PRO / SF30 PRO correct setup for near full usage on a NES mini / SNES mini." and "Full Compatibility of analog sticks and L1 R1 L2 R2. Just make sure you have 1.05 beta firmware for retro receiver and 1.23 firmware on controller. Analog stick didn’t work on N64 core but with this configuration it does. L1 and L2 now work as different buttons." (I'm assuming Amazon will strip my links if I put them here.) Note: even with this clunky workaround, the L3/R3 buttons, which are the buttons beneath the analog sticks, will still not work. That is, though RetroArch also allows them, the retro receiver will not. I think whether you've altered your SNES mini or not, there is some advantage to having a controller with the D-Pad in the top left, such as how the layout is on the SN30 Pro. This is because you'll still use the controller primarily for NES and SNES games. Bottom line: consider it if you want wireless controllers using Bluetooth. Then, whatever BT controller you use with it can also be used on other devices, including your computer, and probably gaming systems to come. If you are investing in new controllers to use with this, something like the SN30 may be the best bet, given the layout of the D-Pad. Cheers. • This POS is like the USB adapter 2…
It Does Not Work As It Claims! Ok, if you plug this into the NES classic mini in the controller port it will not sync an Xbox controller at all, but would sync to a PS4 controller. The problem is it recognized the PS4 controller and showed a white light on the front of the controller, but it recognizes it as a Nintendo Clovercon with no way to change it and functionality was awful. On N64 Super Smash Bros. It would let me choose 1 of the 4 options at start up, but when the character selection screen came up, none of the d pad or sticks would do anything. Totally unplayable. I tried every firmware on 8bitdo website. It made no difference. Everything was the same. I took the little usb cable with the Retro adapter plugged it into my octopus OTG and the micro usb plugged into the adapter. It still would not recognize the Xbox controller, but would pair with a PS4 controller. It is just like the Usb 2 adapter. The light on the PS4 turned green. It recognizes it as an Xbox 360 controller, but is functional, just not the way it should. Not sure how well it does on other consoles. If your ok with this, I would choose the cheaper of the two as you will get the same outcome. And just like the USB, you have to unplug the adapters so the controller will turn off. Seems like it was a way to get people to buy 2 different adapters. Yup, I fell for it. $20 more gone. I’ll keep it as a backup and maybe, doubtful, they will fix this piece of garbage. I would have loved 1 as a PS4 controller and the other as an Xbox one. 🤬 ... show more

  • Bought to use with SN30 Pro+ and SNES Classic
I searched on if anyone else used this for a mini but did not find any answers on it so Ill share my experience. I bought this so i could use a controller to play. As for the 8bitdo controller, once I plugged it into my SNES classic I just had to press the button on the reciever, and the start button on my 8bitdo controller. Instantly connected and started working. What more can I say, if you want to get this for the SNES/NES Classic Mini, this is what you need! Have not tried to connect other controllers though. Ok : After using this for a few hours I have one gripe with it One downside of this product is the sync button is SO SMALL. when you plug it into your SNES Classic it kind of wiggles around and feels loose. When you try to press this TINY sync button, I feel almost as if I am going to break the reciever or the port itself. I also fumbled around trying to update the firmware on my PC since the button was so small I was trying to hold onto it while inserting it into the USB port, it was quite painful to do. I think they should make this button slightly bigger. The Long design of the unit also makes it feel flimsy when plugged into the SNES Classic and feel not very sturdy. If they ever revise this or even read our reviews, I think maybe they want to design it to be shorter so it doesnt feel like the port will break from us just pressing the sync button. But I would assume most people just sync once and forget about it so they wont touch the receiver often. For me I had the issue since I was trying to use the controllers both for my PC and the SNES classic ... show more
