  • Classic collection with a good variety of pieces
Format: Paperback
This is another book which was passed down in my family that I've bought a "new" copy of for myself. The pieces, as the title indicates get progressively harder in difficulty, but there's nothing in here that a well-trained pianist shouldn't be able to sightread rather well. It also works great either as a teaching tool and a book from which you can pull recital pieces. My personal favorites are Benjamin Godard's 2nd Mazurka and the last piece in the book, an arrangement of traditional folk song "Dark Eyes." If you're even halfway into playing piano, I would highly recommend this classic collection. ... show more

  • Classics are still classics
Format: Paperback
I used this book almost 50 years ago when I was a piano student. I now teach piano and have used many intermediate level teaching collections, each of which has its own good and bad points. One day, I gave this book to a student who wanted to play pieces from the classics. He loved it. He told his friends in my studio, and now they all want to use it. It makes them feel like they are playing "grown up" music, and they find the pieces engaging. Like other albums, there are problems with this one: the it contains a few errors; there's very little baroque and no modern music; it's over-edited; and the pieces can be long for intermediate students. However, the fact that this album motivates my students to practice makes up for any of its sins. If you are a teacher or someone who enjoys playing the classics, try it. ... show more

  • The Progressiveness is Great!
Format: Paperback
I really want to contact the seller. I purchased this book elsewhere for my grandson, who is learning how to play the piano, and liked it so much I purchased a second copy. This was a defective copy in that pages 77-92 are duplicated in this volume. This is not a problem in that none of the music is missing from the table of contents and the volume. Please notify G. Schirmer an the publisher that there may be other volumes with the same defect. I would have returned this book for a correct copy, but I have already taken it to the printer services to have it spiral bound. I totally recommend this book because of its progressive nature of music. It starts out easy for beginners an progresses to intermediate to advanced music. I have a masters in music, and I appreciate the methodology behind this volume to keep pianists engaged and challenged at the same time. ... show more

  • Clear
Format: Paperback
This piano book has clear writing/music and was used to replace an older version that was very worn. It has many great pieces like Fur Elise.

  • excellent book to motivate children
Format: Paperback
My Children play piano because I decided they should learn this skill. Hence their practicing can be with forced effort. However, these pieces have given them confidence in their ability to excel at playing the piano. Suddenly their efforts sound like something, not just sing song baby music and simple compositions. While the many notes on these pages look impressive, the pieces are challenging but not difficult and they sound equisite even when played by a 10 yr. old. With this book they can make real music and do it quite well. ... show more
