I purchased this bookshelf primarily because it fit my space almost exactly. I have a bit of a cutout in the wall and this fit. It also wasn't very deep, which was my preference. The box came trashed with holes in it and both ends open. However, the shelves and the metal shelf standards were in perfect condition as they were surrounded by old school styrofoam. No damage to the product even though the box looked like it had been through war. Simple to put together, just remember that the metal shelf standards aren't all the same. The ones with two holes are on the ends and the ones with one hole are in the center. All you do is screw the shelves through the bottom and you're done. This bookshelf comes with backing pieces to the shelves that serve as a stop for books on the back. I decided not to install the backs for now. I have kept them to see if I change my mind. I like the clean look without the backs, but not installing them possibly has some consequences to stability. The top and bottom backs screw into the shelf standards themselves and I think would lend them more stability from side to side racking. However, with the amount of stuff I will put on, I don't think I will have an issues. I'm basically going to alternate between putting on some books in one cube and something decorative in another. If you were going to load it up with books all the way across, I think putting on the backs makes more sense. First, you won't see through, so it doesn't make an aesthetic difference and they will make everything more stable. The center backs just screw into the shelves which would go a long way in preventing any sag, although the shelf standards are close enough where I don't think it will be an issue. Lastly, not putting the backs on cause a couple of small aesthetic issues, which I'm ok with. First, the top of the standards have a hole in them for the back. Also, there's a gap between the shelf and the back of the standard. That gap isn't noticeable at all, so no worries there. Also, that gap is a great place to put an led light if you're into that sort of thing. I don't even see the holes at the top when against the wall. If more noticeable, I would cover them with something. In other words, no big deal. So this is a SOLID shelf that serves it's purpose. I bought this for $259 and I think it's reasonable at that price considering the materials and overall quality. It's now $439. Although it's a nice enough shelf, it's not constructed as a $400 shelf. The actual shelves are thin, the weld joints are obvious, you can see the screws underneath (not recessed). It just doesn't have the touches and the materials of a higher end shelf. I highly recommend this etagere. It's modern and light looking but surprisingly sturdy. I saw this on Wayfair for $100 more. Assembly was relatively easy. Just line up the shelves and supplies before starting.
