I've purchased folding bookcases of other sizes and finishes over many years. I've appreciated the folding ability and their sturdiness despite that, although generally in the 26"-width range. So, I've just purchased, received and installed two of these natural finish 16"/4-shelf bookcases to meet special footprint situations. I am really pleased by this pieces. The most pleasing part of this purchase was the quality and design of their packaging by Stony Edge...best, most efficient, most effective, most protective, yet compact packaging that I've ever experienced. These cases are very good product for a price which isn't cheap. They're all wood and well constructed and yet they're quite light. Their shipping package weight is nominally 20 lbs., but after unpacking, they're more like 18 lbs. or less. My one contention is with the "No Assembly" description. This is the first folding bookcase that I've ever purchased that wasn't completely assembled, whether wood or metal. The unattached top shelf arrives compactly and well-fitted within the folded frame, clearly to provide a smaller shipping configuration. Since that top shelf needs attaching, the screws and hinges are included for final installation for full use, and there's clearly some assembly required. That assembly wasn't difficult--and an included multi-sheet assembly instructions manual has informative illustrations to assist...which is in conflict with the "No Assembly" claim. I finalized the top shelf assembly with a standard phillips screwdriver that most basic home tool kits should have. Since I did this assembly on each of my two purchases, I can attest to the total quality of the construction of these bookcases. They're allegedly pine wood, which accounts for their sturdiness despite their light weight. Their natural finish nicely highlights the wood's grain and their mission style fits well with other mission furniture. Despite the "No Assembly" discrepancy, I regard these bookcases as 5-Star products. Some books, many larger, may be lower-priced but the care taken in their packaging for shipping seems to make this purchase worthwhile. There was no indication of chipping or denting of the pieces. They're so well-packed that I'm still awed by that aspect. My only quibble is with the blatant "No Assembly" claim--which is not an aspect of the product evaluation. The key selling point for this for me was the 150 lbs. per shelf weight capacity (I bought the 32" model). My book collection is mostly drawing instruction books, art collection books, photo reference books, etc. - large books with lots of pictures (which are printed on heavier paper than plain text). My heaviest series of books is 4 lbs. per book, and I currently own seven. That's 28 lbs. for a group of books that only takes up a fraction of a single shelf. I'd made the mistake of buying a cheap particle board bookcase some years ago, and the shelves bowed over time, and I knew didn't want to make the same mistake again. Overall, this is a great bookshelf. The natural finish and open-frame style looks lovely. And even as I was assembling it, I could tell it FELT significantly sturdier than my other set of shelves. I seriously doubt there will be any shelf bowing. There is also hardware included to let you affix it to the wall, but since there are no kids, pets, or earthquakes here, I opted not to do so. That said, I do have one slight complaint: namely, the assembly. Assembly SHOULD HAVE BEEN a snap in theory, but wasn't quite. Unfolding it was easy-peasy. The problem arose when I was installing the one shelf that required actual installation. There were pre-made spots where you were supposed to put screws in, but the holes on one side of the shelf were a smidgen too far over, and didn't quite line up with the holes in the metal hardware I was screwing onto it. I worked around this by taking the shelf off, pre-screwing the screws in and then taking them out again, then reinstalling the shelf while applying pressure to try to align the holes better. Pre-screwing helped me get the screws in straight, but the whole process took significantly more effort than it ought to have. However, this was a) probably a slight manufacturing defect and unlikely to be a problem with every unit and b) able to be worked around. So not too big of a deal, in the end. ... show more

In order to help me organize my books and papers, I needed two small bookcases no higher than 49 inches and no wider than 20 inches for a corner in the dining area of my condo. The Stony-Edge No Assembly Folding Bookcase was the only one that I could find that fit my requirements. The fact that it could fold flat, required very little assembly, and was able to hold 150 lbs per shelf were important to me. Since I am very frugal, I was put off by the price ($99 each), but I am so glad that I purchased them. They are well worth the price and look lovely in their corner. The attached photo shows them in their corner containing my papers and books. I did not attach the before picture showing my organized mess. I think that these bookcases have added a little class to the room. (Sorry if the photo is shown sideways; I tried rotating it but that version also turned out sideways.) The directions were easy to follow and, ta-da, my bookcases were ready for use shortly after I took them out of the box. Because I have limited use of my hands, I did have use my cordless power drill to drive in the four screws for the top shelf, but that was easy-peasy. I attached a photo of one page of the direction booklet to show how easy they are to follow. The two folding bookcases arrived (each in its own box) quickly and in perfect condition. The box that each was packed in was the perfect size for the bookcase and very sturdy. The box had a very sturdy red plastic handle that made it easy for me to carry it up the steps and into my condo.
