  • LITERALLY as good as the LP, for less than 1/3 of the price.
Size: 3*10
Headline says it all. You can buy an LP for about $70, or you can buy this for $20, and the only substantive difference is that this one is built better. That's it. This thing puts out a good amount of sound, the raised dots are well-finished, and the thickness of the guiro is also just right for its size. I can't think of one way to make it better. Comes with the typical afro-rake scraper. It's a good size, and just the right width and stiffness for this size guiro. Just by the way your hold it or mute it with your holding hand, you can get a nice variety of tones out of this. THERE IS LITERALLY NO SOUND QUALITY DIFFERENCE in this and the LP product. You'll just save FIFTY BUCKS for the same size guiro. I toured for many years as a trumpet player who doubled on percussion, and some of the larger gigs I ended up on I was hired as the reverse--a percussionist who doubled on trumpet. I only mention that so that you know when I say it's a gigworthy instrument, that I've got the experience to back up that review. There's just no reason to pay $70 for a freaking guiro--it ain't that complicated. And the thing I appreciate about this one (I have many, including metal ones, including ones I got from Puerto Rico and Cuba) is that the stainless finish is top notch and it won't make your hands stink of carbon steel and rust like the island-made ones. Essentially, you're getting a deluxe build for the island price...which you're sure not getting from LP. Five Stars. If you've read this far, then just buy it. ... show more

  • Guiro Is Fine, Striker Not So Great
Size: 3*10
This one is fine. I got the 10 inch version. I’ve never used a guiro before, so my knowledge base isn’t the best, but my main complaint about this instrument is that it has a reverberating ring that lingers after a strike. It’s not so noticeable when playing in a group, but when I’m just playing it by my self, I definitely notice it. ... show more

  • Works great!
Size: 3*10
I had a hard time picking up this instrument, but I handed it to my percussionist friend and he immediately scratched out a beat. Nicely made! Sounds great when you know what you're doing, LOL

  • Great Full Size Metal Guiro
Size: 3*10
I am a bit of a percussion dabbler. I have several hand drums, shakers, tambourines, a cajon, and a small plastic guiro in addition to this now. The large version has a nice tone, and the ringing of the metal can be varied considerably by your grip in a way that the small plastic one simply could not. It is shiny, and looks nicer in a performance, and I also appreciated that there was a large textured surface to accommodate different handedness and grip styles, and be less likely to hit the smooth part (which is only by the handle). The texture isn't as sharp as I was concerned it might be, and the scraper is a nice quality. Both the scrape and the strike sounds are pleasing, and it is a nice addition to my percussion arsenal that gives a new flavor. ... show more

  • High-pitched percussion instrument
Size: 3*10
This percussion instrument is high-pitched, if left un-dampened. I found you can vary the overtones while muting it by resting one or two fingers on the cylinder lightly and varying the pressure. I've never played a guiro before so I checked out a couple Youtube videos and it appears that there is a lot to learn as far as striking patterns. To use this in recording situations, you would probably want to have different diameter guiros on hand so that you could cut in at specific frequencies. ... show more

  • Made well. Easy to hold.
Size: 3*10
I find it to be a good mid level instrument... and I know that this statement alone is relative to in whose hands this is in... some people can play fascinating beats on any surface! Whereas someone else likes the metallic sound of the material used, which accompanies the scraping, I find it to be a bit too tinniy and ringy sounding for my personal tastes. I think I personally like more earth sounds better, but this may not be a fault so much as a preference. I have played other similar style guiros, and I did not encounter that sustaining metal sound. The protruding surface is fairly mild, not a heavy contact, giving it a nice scratchy sound, which might also be why I her the metal ring more. Ah, but here's a fix that helped!... I wrote to the seller, asking about this shrill metal sound, and they suggest I wad up some material into a ball, and place that inside the cylinder to buffer the tone... that worked! I took a wool dryer ball, which was a little too small, and wrapped it with a self adhesive ace bandage, and that does muffle the sound. The guiro is now a little quieter, but, the ringing is gone... now I think I can start to have some fun with this. BTW, it seems to be well constructed, and can stand up to being beat up, so to speak. ... show more

  • Steel Guiro
Size: 3*10
As a drummer and percussionist, I am always on the lookout for new and various percussion devices. I don't play much Latin music, but in one of my two bands, we do a song which is all percussion and voice, and I play djembe, while the outer four band members play a variety of hand percussion. This is perfect for one of my vocalists. It fairly loud, easy to hold and play, and the rake can be used to get several different sounds. This has a higher pitch, and an obvious crisp metal tone, as opposed to wood guiros, which are lower and warmer in pitch and sound. Both are fine......it simply a matter of the desired sound and song involved. Well made. My only wish was that there was some sort of clip to keep the rake attached to the guiro tube, when being stored. It's stainless steel, so a magnet wouldn't work. Very good value as well. ... show more

  • On the lightweight side, but great percussion piece for your collection!
Size: 3*10
My family and social group collect and play lots of instruments, and smaller percussion items like this are really accessible for our younger kids! I know there are fancier guiros, but at under $20 I felt like this one was affordable while still being more than a toy. It's got a nice scratchy/vibey sound and my kids call it "the cheese grater." ... show more
