This thing is a beast. I mean that in a good way. It's a quality piece of manual machinery that is made very well and should last a very long time. Pretty much all metal, and the gauge of the metal is thicker than I imagined it would be. This thing looks like something that would be used as a weapon in medieval times. I would not want this barreling towards me that's for sure. The spikes are 3" long and come to a fairly sharp point. They inserted themselves into my sandy ground without any extra weight added, so it will penetrate much more when filled. Even empty it is effective, but even empty, pushing it is a workout. This is why horses pull a plow rather than pushing one. If you pull the aerator, it becomes so much easier. Now all I need is a good harness for my wife (looks around nervously), and we are all set. Now I know this is a manual machine, and Hubiiett isn't going to say this, but I'm willing to bet I can rig this to be towed by my lawn mower. That's just me talking...my own opinion...don't go lawyering up on me. Assembly was easy and intuitive, and the wheels btw are top notch, nice bearing set. For maintenance there are two grease fittings on each side for the main axle. They come with little red covers to protect them. They have a little loop to keep them on the axle if you forget to cover them back up. So any way I slice it, this is a professional grade piece of equipment made for a residential yard. Well made and should be a welcome addition to improving the lawn and garden areas. Don't forget the gardens...they will benefit from this just as much as a lawn will. Recommended! ... show more

  • Affordable DIY Aerator That Feels Built to Last
Color: Green
If your lawn is compacted and struggling, this is a practical and budget-friendly tool that looks ready to do the job. I picked up this rolling lawn aerator to help improve soil compaction and allow better water and nutrient absorption. My lawn definitely needs the help, and this seemed like a solid option for a homeowner who wants to handle the work without hiring it out. The build quality stands out right away. It feels durable and well constructed, not like something that will bend or wear out after a season or two. I expect this to hold up for years with normal use. The ability to add weight is a key feature. The tank can be filled with sand for maximum effectiveness, though water is also an option if you are not dealing with freezing temperatures. Given the Northeast climate, sand is the safer choice for me. I have not had the chance to put it into the ground yet due to lingering snow, but early spring is right around the corner and this will be one of the first tools I use. Based on initial impressions, this looks like a strong value for anyone looking to improve their lawn without investing in expensive equipment. ... show more

This is a heavy-duty machine, and I'm happy to have it, but it comes with some annoyances and concerns that make me unable to rate this a five-star product. Note that my review comes after I optimized the aerator for maximum weight by filling the rolling chamber with sand. My St Augustine turf is growing in dense enough clay that the spikes were only protruding about half-way in; but with the added weight, the penetration is total. Certainly, however, the operation requires a lot of muscular exertion, so at least for an old guy like me, aeration needs to be approached as a full workout -- primarily the lower body and the hips, but also the arms and shoulders. I'm six-foot tall, so I tried the handle on both the middle and longest extension settings, and found the longest preferable for pulling. The product is described as being push-able and pull-able, and while this is technically true, in my experience pushing is nearly impossible, except for a couple of feet at a time. Mostly I think the angle of the handle just doesn't provide enough pushing leverage, but maybe someone shorter and stronger could make it work. I suspect most people will be like me, pulling the thing around the yard, either twisting the body so you can walk forward while dragging, or just basically walking backwards. I'm happy with the aeration results (hoping it will help the turf), and I think the materials are mostly sufficiently strong (with good wheels that make rolling pretty easy when not aerating), but changing direction while aerating is not so easy as, say, turning a lawn-mower around. I found it's best not to try to keep aerating while changing direction; but to patiently raise the handle high, lifting the spikes so only the wheels are touching, then making a relatively easy 90-degree turn (or 180-degree). The handle assemble is not flimsy, but I feel it needs babying if it's going to last for some years, since there's a whole lot of torque on the connectors through the metal. While I was still trying to figure out how to turn the thing, I heard and felt some metal creaking at the spot where the pole connects to the base unit, and this is when I realized I needed a technique that wouldn't strain it. Hopefully, by raising the tines at every turn, the handle will hold up well enough, but at the longest setting, there's really not a lot of pipe overlap, so the middle section may be a weak spot too, so I’ll be doubly careful to make sure all force takes the form of direct pulling or pushing. The vinyl grips slip off way too easily, which might sound like a small matter, but it's really hard to use the machine when the grips keep slipping off. The whole thing arrived lubricated, and I found the metal under the grips to be somewhat oily, so I cleaned it off and then I filled the grips with gasoline for a few seconds and then reattached them. The next day, the slipping was somewhat better, but still not great, so I think they're just not made tight enough, and someday I'll probably have to look into gluing options. Assembly was pretty easy, and the seller includes everything you need, including two spare spikes (and a thoughtful brush for clearing sand away from the seal around the barrel cover after you fill it up), but the instructions are surprisingly inadequate. I don't like the trend away from language in instructions; sometimes illustrations are all you need, but sometimes a brief description can save you a lot of confusion. But the surprising part was the seller's decision not to include any usage tips or care instructions, beyond some general warnings about the sharp tines (which should be heeded, as this thing weighs a lot, and it would be easy to damage your ankles or feet with an untimely shift of weight while changing direction). Also, maintenance is never mentioned, so while there is an apparent oiling nipple covered by a red plastic cover, I don't know if I have the right tool, or the right lubricant, or the right timeframe for lubrication. I do hope to use this a couple of times per season, when I need the extra exercise, and I expect it to last as long as I keep it in the shed, out of the weather, and make sure not to over-twist the handle while turning. ... show more
