  • A very interesting and entertaining book.
The author attends our church, but I didn't know until recently that he had driven for Uber or written a book. Life threw him a curveball when he became ill and was forced to change his career, but this is a great testimonial of God's provision and guidance. He takes his readers on a tour of the world of an Uber driver, something many of us will never do. He meets many interesting characters along the way and it is fascinating to learn about their lives and about his interactions with his riders. He makes quite a number of spiritual applications based on his experiences and that adds much to the appeal of the book. It's a fascinating book that gives readers a glimpse of "the other side of life" and one that I would highly recommend. ... show more

  • Wow. Well worth the read
I purchased this for several reasons. I am a pastor's wife, with a husband who is physically declining, so I know that the future will hold some major life changes for both of us. I've been curious about the life of an Uber driver as well, and this actually confirmed my guess about what it might be like, especially living in an urban environment. I run a food pantry of a fairly large size (for how much longer? I'm not sure. I'm slowing down physically and mentally, and that is scaring me.) And as someone who is curious about our clientele, I've gone to the length of car-camping for extended periods and becoming a group member of several car camping/living groups to determine what it's like for people who are living out of cars and other vehicles who are (legally) homeless. I knew that it was likely that I would be reading about some experiences that would ring true of so many interactions I have. I was curious about how this pastor turned Uber driver would interact with his passengers and who those passengers might be. I figured I might learn something, and possibly be challenged in how I relate to people. I did and I am. Whether you're a person or faith or not, and especially if you want to know what it's like driving strangers around for a living, this little gem of a book is enlightening and appealing. I love the author's sense of humor and humility mixed with humanity. I looked him up and couldn't find anything current to say how he's doing, but know that even if his disease has progressed to the point that he can no longer work, his wife needs and deserves the support of people giving reviews and continuing to share this book. Because a pastor's wife might just be the least supported person in ministry, while she does all the supporting. And I say this with humility and humor, because it takes one to know one. I pray you are continuing to remind yourselves of the blessings while you smirk at the ironies of this life. ... show more

  • Entertaining Read with Lessons to Learn Along the Way
Steve is a great story teller which comes through in his writing. It is fascinating and entertaining to learn about what life is really like in a day.... or year... in the life of an Uber driver. Here in the midst of COVID there was one lesson that seemed widely applicable, 'Even when things are not going as planned and I am being pulled off course by setbacks and unexpected changes, I can sense God working in the background, orchestrating His plan while mine falls apart.' (p.26) ... show more

  • Encouraging
This book is funny, encouraging, reflective, hopeful and well written. I love how each story left you thinking about humanity and how often we overlook other people and their situations when they have a story to tell. This book left me with the challenge of seeing that each person's life has value even if they were in situations that were difficult. At the end of the day, we have to realize that God does care about every person on this planet, and we may be the instrument He chooses to use to reveal that to the individuals who cross our path. So glad Steve chose to put his experiences in a book. ... show more

  • Funny, weighty, hopeful, and full of wisdom!
This book made me laugh AND cry. I love a good story and a good story teller! I expected to laugh, because Steve was my youth pastor many, many years ago, and he always made us laugh! But, what I didn’t expect was how honestly he exposed his struggle and vulnerability through the diagnosis of his Parkinson’s Disease and the subsequent loss of his preaching ministry. The heavy weight of some of the strangers’ stories he shares are balanced by his funny outlook on life. What a great, living example of what he used to preach!! I read through this book in one evening- I’m sure you’ll do the same! ... show more

  • Terrific read - humorous, transparent and authentic!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading “1000 Strangers in My Car” and found that I couldn’t put it down and finished reading it within 24 hours of it arriving on my doorstep. Steve LaFarge has a very easy to read writing style - he is humorous, transparent and authentic and has a way of gently challenging us without being “preachy”. Well done Pastor Steve!! ... show more

  • A provocative fast read
LaFarge may have changed careers when Parkinsons forced him to leave the pulpit for the steering wheel, but his vocation remained strong. The author's love for God and love for people shines through in this collection of vignettes from his time as a rideshare driver. The stories are engaging, and tell as much about the author's spiritual life as about his passengers. Reading this book I found myself wanting to be an Uber driver so I could experience God the same way LaFarge did! ... show more
