  • Easy to use and a top value.
Size: 7-INCH
Up though the lowest through lower high powered magnification the microscope shows a clear picture on the screen. There is true value and a limited cost and the instrument seems well built. The instrument is easy to use and would be great share adventures of the small world with a child or grand child. ... show more

  • Great for coins
I love my "microscope." I am a coin collector. I never figured out how to attach the cylinder to elongate the microscope. I looked everywhere. Actually the instruction manual that came is not that clear. I went to Youtube as we all do to get help. But I still could not find out how to attach the extending cylinder... ... show more

  • The little scope cam that could, for the most part.
The box includes: The scope cam A plastic base with a mounting rod A mounting bracket, with height controls A minidisc that includes a copy of the slightly dated amcap software An unbranded 32GB MicroSD card A Micro USB cable A Manual An extremely basic "Introduction to coin collection" guide The entire scope assembly measures 6.75x4.75x7 inches when collapsed, and weighs 15.2 oz. It is indeed standalone, and includes a 18650 li-ion cell, with a marked capacity of 2ah. It also has a microSD card slot, for standalone capture and recording. There is also a brightness control on the right side of the scope, for adjusting LED ring output. The focus ring on the scope is exceptionally large, and is accessible from both sides of the cam. This makes it easy to adjust the focus, without jarring or moving the position of it. Stills can be captured in VGA, 1.3mp, 2mp, and 3mp, modes. Videos can be captured at 1280x720 (upscaled, not native), and VGA (Effectively NTSC - 720x480) None of the above resolutions greater than VGA are native. So all the scope is doing is upscaling the image, leading to larger pixels rather than a truly larger image. The aspect ratio does seem to change though. One thing to note: To take advantage of the complete focal length of the scope, you need at least 12 inches of vertical travel. The included mounting rod only offers roughly 2.75 inches of travel. It's not an issue, there is just additional room for expansion if one chooses to use a longer rod. The vertical rod is a bit of an unusual diameter, so if you're looking to modify the scope for greater coverage, you'll need a rod with a diameter of 0.552 inches (14mm) to do so. The menus have settings for various functions of the cam, and video feed. You'll find settings to adjust image resolution, video resolution, subject alignment, system language, sleep time, light frequency compensation, time and date, software version info, and usb I/O configuration. Image and video quality modes are, as I stated previously, all upscaled from 640x480/720x480 (NTSC), and is not native. so anything beyond the lowest resolution is going to result in increased pixelation. Also, I would likely recommend using something other than the included software, as amcap was released originally for use with Windows ME/2000, and will likely give the user issues when trying to interface with it. It's an extremely old utility, though I do believe it's being maintained by a third party now, so this may have changed. Personally, if you want something fully featured, and free... I would give the Vividia Borescope utility a shot. It's packed with more than enough features for this camera. There are tons of variables that can be configured through it, as well. On that note... The scope seems to function quite well. I've had no problems capturing video clips, or stills with it. If you're aiming to capture at a higher resolution, I would recommend capturing media natively, and postprocessing through an AI based utility. This will give you the best result, without any pixelation. Also, it might be useful to note that this camera uses MJPG encoding. It does not support anything modern, such as h.264 encoding. Overall, it's an excellent little scope, though a bit overpriced for its functionality. One can find similar scope cams, minus the integrated display for around $10. I used to own one, but it failed after approximately 5 years of use. Aside from not supporting higher resolutions natively (without upscaling), it does everything it needs to. I would recommend giving it a shot, if you have the budget for it. The only things that may be considered an Achilles heel, so to speak, are the lack of higher native resolutions, and the lack of any other encoding methods to properly support said higher resolutions. Those can be worked around, with third party utilities though. Some of the above are a limitation of the sensor used in the cam. Unfortunately, this is a hardware limitation. ... show more

  • Best for flat objects
This microscope is listed as a coin microscope. It does excel at looking at coins or anything else that is flat. I got it with the intention of inspecting my hearing aids. The speakers and other components are too small to see under a standard magnifying glass so I thought using this microscope would free up my hands while I cleaned my hearing aids. No such luck. This really is a microscope, not just a powerful magnifying glass. As such, there is a very short focal length (like a millimeter or so) so if you are looking at anything other than a flat object you won't be able to focus on much. Also, the object can't be moving. I thought I could hold something under the lens but that's not the case. Any movement will either move the object out of range or out of focus. I did manage to sit the hearing aid on the platform and view the speaker as well as the silicone dome separately but I wouldn't be able to work on it due to movement. In the product video you see someone take the microscope out into the yard to look at bugs and plants. With such a small focal length, holding it still would be impossible. I think this would be fun and useful for a coin or stamp collector. I think it would also come in handy if you really need to see any detail on a flat, stationary object. Don't expect to work on anything under the lens though. ... show more
