Description

"The most important and accessible mental health book in a generation. Truly life-changing." – Osher Günsberg Your Head is a Houseboat is a uniquely hilarious guide to what goes on in your brain, from illustration sensation Campbell Walker aka Struthless. The only truth we really know is that we're going to spend the rest of our lives in our own houseboat (our head) so it makes sense to make that houseboat as good as possible. The houseboat needs cleaning and maintenance, and it shouldn't be weighed down by junk (our own thoughts and other people's opinions). It has an unreliable and overworked Sea Captain, and a zoo of animalistic desires below the deck who are really steering. But it's your houseboat, so it's probably time for you to cast away and set sail (is that even how houseboats work?) on a journey to understanding it. In Your Head is a Houseboat, Cam demystifies brain functions, mental health, emotions, mindfulness and psychology – but with less complex terminology and more bizarre metaphors. It's a book filled with illustrations, journal exercises and words that will probably hit too close to home. At its core, this is a funny, accessible approach to understanding your head and making it a nicer place to live. Read more

  • This book helped me get through some rough times!
Format: Paperback
I love this book, I think I needed to read it sooner. Struthless’ way of thinking is a one in a generation thing. He is able to convey strong emotions and themes in a funny way. While reading the book I could hear him in my head. The book is filled with helpful metaphors that make understanding mental health very simple and in a meaningful way. The art and the print of the book is spotless. I wish more people knew about the book, I think it would help many of us struggling with a messy mind. During hard times is easy to get lost in the fog and this book is a workbook to get out of it 😊 Thanks Campbell for sharing all your crazy thoughts with the world with so much commitment. ... show more

  • Fun, witty, and genius
Format: Paperback
I love Cameron's illustrations and he makes very valid points with different exercises and diagrams to throw down some digestible wisdom.

  • Wow!
Format: Kindle
Fun to read with seriously useful wisdom that can be directly applied to your life. I read it in a couple of hours. Will go through it again and this time do the journaling. A thought: Finding mental clarity, self compassion and general peace of mind are all theme’s people from all over the world could use help with. I grew up in Kenya, now live the Netherlands and work in the intercultural space. I feel that making a version of this book in which the metaphor and the drawings are culturally fitting (hence differentiated per cultural group - eg. Featuring the big five and no snakes in the zoo for the African region) would help the writer reach even more people in the world. All in all: an excellent and easy to read tool which actually focuses on helping the reader go through a transformative and very personal process and not on the writer showing off how smart he is (even though he actually is incredibly smart :) ) ... show more

  • Incredible
Format: Paperback
This is one of my favorite self improvement books. This is the second copy I bought so I can let others in my life borrow it when they feel lost/their thoughts and life are too tangled. I highly recommend it. The metaphors are very insightful and makes internal thought processes make a lot of sense. The dark humor is great and kinda optimistically nihilistic. Especially if you've found yourself in a bit of a depressive spot, it's realistic and comforting. Can't recommend this book enough. Just great. One copy for me and one copy for loved ones to borrow. ... show more

  • I want to gift this to my loved ones and my future kid
Format: Paperback
As a person who's on therapy for almost a decade, I can easily say this book is worth many many therapy sessions (of course you need real therapy if you are going through excessive trauma)- and the best thing is that you go through its exercises in your own pace. As I was reading this, I imagined what would happen if I was provided with this wisdom in such a fun and relatable way if I were to just entering my adulthood. I giggled and cried several times while reading it and it reminded me of the Little Prince with its wisdom and illustrations. I appreciate Cam for his vulnerability and kindness. ... show more

  • past and present addressed, hope the future gets addressed
Format: Kindle
I like the author's ideas to use journaling as a tool to help process the past and increase the odds for achieving mental clarity in the present. If the author sees this review, I hope the author seeks to steer his house boat in a specific future direction based on the answer to this question: What will happen after you die? 🙏 ... show more

  • Absolutely CANNOT Say Enough Good Things About Houseboat!
Format: Paperback
Like so many people, 2020 was a year of *really* getting to know my genuine self, and taking stock of the luggage cart of baggage I’m still carrying around with me well into adulthood. I have other books that address the actual issues, but this book so clearly, and *entertainingly*, explains how the brain works on an emotional level, making it easier to understand what’s going on up in my noggin. I have ADHD, so finishing anything other than the first two pages of any book is almost unheard of. Houseboat had me from the first paragraph. I didn’t finish it in one sitting, but I was easily motivated to read at least a chapter a night until I finished it (which, honestly, is more impressive to me that the one sitting thing). Thank you *so much*, Campbell for using all your life experiences to share with others in the same… uh, boat. (Pun not intended, but I’m happy it’s there😜). ... show more

  • A Fantastic Mental Health Guide via Journaling
Format: Kindle
I’m sure I’m among the majority of reviewers who bought this book not only because it sounded helpful, but also because I already knew, liked, and trusted Struthless (Campbell Walker). He’s one of my favorite YouTubers. But this is a book I’d recommend to just about anyone. The houseboat metaphor works really well, along with the sub-metaphors for our various passengers and the terrain we have to navigate in life (and it’s fun). And let’s not forget the wonderful cartoons generously placed throughout the book. I’ve done a lot of this mental work already, but definitely plan on revisiting this book for upkeep and maintenance. ... show more
