Description

For Fans of True-Life Pirate Stories "Only someone who has lived in the shadows chasing faded pirates for an age, and is blessed with creativity, can pull off a book of this high caliber." —Wreck Watch Magazine Maritime Media Mountbatten Literary Award Nominee 2021 International Book Awards finalist in History: General 1 Bestseller in Caribbean & West Indies, Central America, and GlobalizationPirates scholar, Rebecca Simon, PhD, explains how the global manhunt for Captain Kidd turned pirates into the romantic antiheroes we love today. Crime and punishment. During his life and after his death, Captain William Kidd’s name was well known in England and the American colonies. He was infamous for the crime for which he was hanged, piracy. Rebecca Simon dives into the details of the two-year manhunt for Captain Kidd. Captain Kidd was hanged in 1701, followed by a massive British-led hunt for all pirates during a period known as the Golden Age of Piracy. Ironically, public executions only increased the popularity of pirates. And, because the American colonies relied on pirates for smuggled goods such as spices, wines, and silks; pirates tended to be protected from capture. All things pirates. The more pirates were hunted and executed, the more people became supportive of the “Robin Hoods of the Sea”―both because they saw the British’s treatment of them as an injustice and because they treasured the goods pirates brought to them. These historical events were pivotal in creating the portrayal of pirates as we know them today. They grew into romantic antiheroes―which ultimately led to characters like the mischievous but lovable Captain Jack Sparrow. • A fun and exciting read filled with high-seas adventure and intrigue!
Format: Paperback
This exciting read is perfect for anyone who loves pirates, history, or just a good story! Dr. Simon eloquently outlines not just our cultural fascination with pirates, but also the complex human world that was pirating in the Caribbean. Pirates were all of us. From aristocrats to former slaves, they could be brutal or charitable. They could be men or women. They could be both justly and unjustly accused of their crimes. But, like most of us, they were more often working people just trying to make a living to support a family and community waiting for them back home. Also, who can’t relate to people who enjoy a good glass of grog? ... show more

  • Why we live pirates explained
Format: Paperback
We all love pirates but this breaks down our fascination with pirates. It’s well researched, but also admits the limits of research. Readability is really high. The prose flows really well which makes it hard to put down. Highly recommended.

  • Pirates? What is there not to like about this book?
Format: Paperback
A book abouy pirates? What is there not to like? This book is diffrent from other history books I read, (and I read quite a few), and I mean that in a goid way. It is a easy read and a true pageturner. Started on it yesterday and finished it today! It’s story is captivating and the conversations in the books are fascinating. I’d highly recomend this book and I cannot wait for her next book to be released ... show more

  • Making piracy fun again.
Format: Paperback
This is a light, easy and very enjoyable read on the subject of piracy and its effect on the culture of the day and the culture of our day too. None too heavy on dates and places, just enough to keep the flavor alive for the reader. What sets this apart is the look at the society around piracy, English, Caribbean and North American. A perfect book for those just beginning to look into piracy or those wanting to look beyond cutlasses and doubloons. ... show more

  • Good history, needed trigger warnings
Format: Paperback
The book contains a lot of basic pirate knowledge. It's well written and the narrator is pretty good. There was some fun and interesting stuff I didn't know and what I did already know was presented well. I would have given five stars if I hadn't been taken completely off guard by how often and how explicitly hanging is described. More time is spent describing in great detail the manor of hanging, what it looked like, what it probably felt like, where they did it etc etc etc multiple times over. The author spent more time talking about hanging than discussing Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Blackbeard altogether. A trigger warning would have been greatly appreciated especially for the trial/sentencing of Captain Kidd where the author gave a dramatic first person experience of Kidd's hanging. It's all too much. I understand the two topics are linked but enough is enough. ... show more

  • Delightful, and comprehensive too
Format: Paperback
Most books about pirates look down upon, or ignore completely, those salty sea dogs’ massive and pervasive influence on popular culture, a mistake this fun, smart volume largely makes up for by devoting welcome pages to plays, movies, music and even video game depictions of their colorful lifestyles – although it’s odd indeed that Robert Newton, who is almost completely responsible for our pop conception of what a pirate is today is barely mentioned – an oversight comparable to writing a similar book about Dracula and ignoring Bela Lugosi! The emphasis on Captain Kidd is perhaps misplaced as well, as he was less a pirate than a terminally unlucky privateer used as a scapegoat by his enemies. Kidd’s influence however, due to his vastly overblown reputation, was perhaps as important in characterizing piracy in his time as Newton’s has been in ours though, so it’s hard to fault the author of this rollicking good-time book for his prominence here. ... show more
