  • Feels like I'm in my slippers.
Wide toe box is much appreciated. At the end of the day my feet feel great, the shoes still look good and I'm a satisfied customer. The only gripe I have is that the shoelaces are too short, and I need to replace them. The lightweight shoes have soles that look like gum eraser. I live in the desert where the summer temps are very hot; typically, in the 100s. I'm wondering if the very warm streets and hot sidewalks will my shoe soles melt and get sticky? That will provide for great traction. Anyway, the price is terrific, and the value makes this a 5 star deal for me. ... show more

  • Subtle styling and very comfortable
Size: 11 Wide Color: W51 Black Gum
I prefer minimalist shoes, but so many of them are just plain ugly, especially the type that look like rubber cartoon toes at the front. Why is that even a thing? Anywhoo, these are not those. These are minimalist shoes with a basic athletic shoe style. They are comfortable to wear all day, and basically feel like wearing slippers. The toe box is roomy, and the fit feels good, despite only being available in whole sizes. I usually wear a 10.5, but the 11 fits great. Overall, I’m very happy with these. ... show more

  • Supply issue -- Size caution
Size: 10 Wide Color: W51 Dark Grey
Several months ago I was prepared to write a great review for this shoe but the situation has evolved. I still like the shoe. I've worn one pair for three months and ordered a second pair. But there are issues, mostly with order/return processing. Orders BTW were "sold by Whitin" and "shipped from Amazon". Long story short: The first order took a very long time to arrive -- and then, weirdly, the record disappeared from my Amazon account. But I liked the shoes and ordered another pair, selecting a different color this time. After another long wait the shoes arrived but they were the wrong color. And even more disagreeably they were soiled and worn-looking; obviously a returned pair, floating loose in a cardboard box. I sent them back to exchange for right color... hoping, also, for an unused pair! Third time's a charm. After a fairly brief wait I received the correct color; clean, fresh, and packaged like new shoes. But by this time, after three months, a quality issue had developed with the first pair. The lace loop, the loop glued to the shoe's tongue, has become nearly detached on one shoe. It's a small problem, not worth returning for, and won't keep me from wearing the shoes -- but it's disappointing. Bottom line: As a fan of barefoot-style shoes, I like these. They are light and flexible with a minimal arch and a comfortable forefoot space. Soles seem to wear well and uppers seem fairly tough. One caution on sizing: The removable insole measures almost exactly what the chart says for that size -- but what the chart doesn't account for is that the shoe adds at least another .5cm of length beyond the insole. Don't order too large -- think moccasin. Soft shoes feel sloppy if too large. Lack of half-sizes could be a problem for some. ... show more

  • Perfect shoes for hiking hard trails
Size: 11 Wide Color: W51 Black Gum
I bought these shoes and immediately took them to 2 double black diamond hiking trails. They gripped the rocks and gravel like gecko's feet. The soles are hard enough to protect me from sharp rocks but soft enough that I can feel the terrain. They felt comfortable out of the box. I did not have to break them in. I just put them on and walk a few very rough miles. If you are not used to barefoot shoes, you should take it easy first. They don't get hot, my feet stay cool. Most barefoot hiking shoes look fugly, like water shoes that are trying too hard. Like a designer trying to stand out and reaching uncanny valley. Not these, they look great. I can walk into a restaurant without feeling self-conscious. I love these shoes. They are by far the best hiking shoes I have ever had. ... show more

  • Comfortable, Sturdy, Nice Looking
Size: 9 Wide Color: W51 Black Gum
No negatives, well made, good looking (received several complements and inquires about the shoes). Use them for all-around activities - casual, hiking, walking, running.... Great price.

  • Build Quality Issues
Size: 10 Wide Color: W51 All Black
An update to my update..... I received a replacement for the pair that gave me a blister. The replacement shoe was properly finished with no rough edges. I have walked in them extensively and have had no further issues. An update to my previous four star reviews... After a few days of wearing these shoes things went sideways. I went for a four mile trail walk. I started feeling a rubbing on the top of my right foot a half mile in. I stopped, took the shoe of and readjusted my sock and the shoe. It did no good. By the time I got home I had a blister on the top of my right foot where the eyelets for the laces contact my foot. It did not happen on the left. I will be returning the shoes. Pity....I really liked them. Originally review.... I have had another pair of Whitin barefoot shoes for over a year. They have held up well. I like them a lot, but they have that unusual "barefoot look". I use them for the gym and walking, but not as a casual shoe. These trail runners look good and can definitely be worn as a casual shoe. I wear a 9.5, so I bought the 10. They fit perfectly. Some people might be confused seeing them described as wide size shoes. It is the toe box that is wide. The rest of the shoe is normal. These shoes are zero drop, but do have a slightly padded sole, so they are not true barefoot. That said, they do everything a barefoot should do by encouraging natural motion while walking. I have had significant back and hip problems. For me, this type of shoe much improves how my body functions as I move about. I feel much more sure footed wearing them, which is huge after back surgery. Beware...once you get to wearing zero drop shoes, all your "normal" athletic shoes will feel like high heels. I have worn these Whitins on concrete, dirt trails and walking trails covered with 3/4" crushed granite. They handled everything well. I am holding off on the fifth star until I see how the hold up. At half to a third the price of other barefoot shoes, these things are a bargain. ... show more
