  • Review # 238....
... ... ... Generally, I wouldn't bother throwing in my two cents when there's already such a wealth of information available on this cd, but I feel absolutely compelled to write and say I LOVE THIS CD!!! Really. It's absolutely amazing. YOU MUST HAVE THIS. Even if you've never heard of David Gray before now. Buy it and be absolutely amazed. I actually never heard of David Gray until very recently when I saw the British film "This Year's Love" (David plays a pub singer and performs some of his songs in the movie). I bought this cd on that basis alone. I was a little hesitant at first, since I'm not generally one to try "new" music (I'm generally pretty content with whatever's on the radio). Boy, am I glad I decided to try "something different" for a change. This cd is hauntingly beautiful. The songs are actually meaningful (unlike most of what we hear on the radio) and they evoke all kinds of emotions in you. For example, my favorite song is "This Year's Love" and is about a person singing about their current love, insisting that it last despite history suggesting that it won't. The song is sad, but it also elicits a kind of hope that this relationship might also be the last--the real deal. Very much like real life. Incredibly poignant collection of songs. I've since purchased other David Gray cds, and although I like them fine, White Ladder continues to stand out as the best of his work. A perfect introduction to David Gray for those unfamiliar with this talented singer/songwriter. Those who are already familiar with his work should already own this cd...if you don't, you are doing a great disservice to yourself and to your appreciation for David's talent. Please do yourself a favor, and get this cd NOW. ... show more

  • Great Album
What the other reviewers have said is true, this is definitely one of the best albums to come out in recent years. There's not one song on here that I don't like, although, I would say "Please Forgive Me" is probably my least favorite. Like the others, I bought this album mostly for "Babylon", and was pleasantly surprised that the rest of the songs were so good. I especially like "My, Oh, My", "White Ladder", and "Say Hello Wave Goodbye". I know "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" had been recorded by someone before, but even though I don't remember the original, I know I've heard it before, somewhere. It is a great song, and doesn't even seem like it's 9 minutes long....it draws you in and holds your attention throughout the whole song. This album is a perfect blend of acoustic and electronic music. Although, I'm sure they would all sound good acoustically, the electonic part does add another dimension and though it's subtle, it comes through just enough to compliment the acoustic elements, rather than overpower them. I love David's voice and his songwriting. I just can't believe that I didn't discover him, until now. Better late, than never. I highly recommend this album! ... show more

  • One of the best CDs I have ever listened to.
I was first introduced to this album about 10 years ago, I have always enjoyed it and just purchased it again after not being able to find it over the past year. This makes my 3rd purchase of this same CD (it was stolen from my car about 5 years ago the first time I had to repurchase it), and hopefully my last as I now have it in MP3 format as well as physical CD (Thanks to Amazon's free MP3 promotion, which cost me less than just buying the MP3 album!) Now, Why would I buy the same CD 3 times? It's just that good. This is one of my favorite albums to listen to when it's time to unwind from the day. There are a few songs known by many on this CD, however as you listen to the CD each song is as good as the last, there are very few CDs that I can listen to in completion (and even run on repeat) without getting the urge to reach for the "skip track" button . This CD is one of those few. ... show more

  • Great for David Gray fans, maybe not for others
If you're a David Gray fan, it's a nice disk and the price is right (at the time of my purchase). If you're not a David Gray fan, it's some nice relaxing music, but nothing that will blow you away. "Please Forgive Me" is the song that got the most play time and has great percussion work on it, it alone is almost worth the price of the disk. Non fans may recognize "Babylon" and/or "Sail Away," but that's probably it. If you're not a David Gray fan and you're looking for modern music that is chill and relaxing, I'd check out Josh Radin. ... show more

  • Total pull
I am totally aware that there is a MAN writng and playing these songs, as I listen to them. This means, that for me, the innate humanity that threads through this album is not so much showy as intensely personal. As I am a woman, I want to be in to this album as I hear it. If you're a guy, that's ok too. You can relate in a manner that is different yet quite as striking, I am certain. David Gray is sensual and doesn't hold back. I really love that about his work. I suppose you could say Gray is a true artist and I am simply pulled toward White Ladder for seriously soaring type reasons. If you know what I mean. This is why I buy music, so this is why I gave this CD five stars. Give this album a chance and see how you feel about the entwining lyrics and music and what they do to you. ... show more

  • PERFECT
I first heard White Ladder while spending a month in England. It was everywhere. When I came home, I would catch a song or two here and there. This is the third I have purchased, the first two played to death. This album has ZERO bad points - Gray is sublime, the songs are lush, perfect. A great album for dinner dates, cuddling, being alone, doing homework or housework - in general, there is nothing one could do that this album would not enhance. A jewel, a must for anyone's collection. ... show more
