  • Engaging Story to Read Again and Again
Format: Hardcover
Penelope Rex is surprised her classmates are all human. They’re delicious, so she eats them. The teacher makes her spit them back up, and she is frustrated that it’s tough to make friends. She even eats one kid again. And spit him back up again. It’s not until the class goldfish bites Penelope Rex that she starts to develop empathy, and a touch of impulse control. I’ve read this now several times with my preschool aged son and first grade daughter and they love it. The illustrations are detailed and draw kids in. Penelope’s bedroom and classroom are interesting and detailed, and kids want to talk about what’s the same and different to their little worlds. She has chosen a pony lunch box and fills it with 300 tuna sandwiches. The details matter more the more times you read a book like this. And while this book is about a dinosaur, I really appreciate the diversity of students in the class. There are students who present as Black, White, and Asian and wear headscarves and a Yamaka. My daughter noticed the headscarf right away and talked about the heroine in one of her favorite books and made the connection to religious practice. Finally, while preschoolers don’t actually eat each other, they are learning empathy and impulse control. And this book is a beautiful entry to conversations about it with kids. A perfect book for every 3-7 year-olds’ “read again and again” library. And fantastic for classroom and school libraries everywhere! ... show more

Best...book...ever! I'm a substitute teacher and was left this book as a read aloud in a fourth grade class. After reading it once, I had to own it. The text is very readable and the illustrations are not only beautifully done, but add to the story and are hilarious. I’ve read it to over a dozen classes and here’s my breakdown of age appropriateness: TK - 1st: too young, but watching their little faces contort as they try to figure out how they feel about children getting eaten and spit out by a dinosaur is priceless. Read it to this age group for your own enjoyment. 2nd grade: depends on the maturity level and how awake they are. First thing in the morning it’s the same as TK-1st. Afternoon is golden. Still a little shocked, but then they beg to have it read again. 3-5th: the golden years. Kids are enthralled and understand the humor in the illustrations perfectly. They are also able to start grasping the moral of the story. 6th - the oldest person alive: enjoyable fun to read and have read to. A wonderful piece of literary and artistic genius. ... show more

  • Absolutely Hilarious
My granddaughter and I read this together. We laughed, enjoying the story immensely. We loved the illustrations, too. This is a fun book for young readers. Caregivers will like sharing it with their kids. It is a good title for all ages. I recommend this book. It is charming and made me smile. I will definitely read more from this author. ... show more

  • Unexpectedly fun
Format: Hardcover
Read this as mystery reader for my daughter's second grade class and it was a hit! Both my 5 (in preK) and 8 year old (2nd grade) really love this book, but I think it might be too much for *some* preschoolers, since the gist of the book is the dinosaur eating her classmates...she does spit them back out, but for little ones who maybe can't understand context, I could see it being upsetting for really empathetic kids, particularly if they're already scared or nervous about starting kindergarten. That said, it is clever and a funny book! I think early elementary is the best age for this book (K-3). We originally borrowed this book from the library but we all enjoyed it so much (and wanted to keep re-reading it so often) that I bought it so we could have our own copy. ... show more

  • A very funny, witty and relatable child's story..
Format: Hardcover
I first saw this children's book at a bookstore when it was first released several years ago, and bought it as it was the same name as my young granddaughter and the story appeared very funny. My grandchild at the time was three, and loved it...she is now seven and I just bought a another one for her, and also gave this book several times as gifts to my friends' grandchildren, and they loved it!! And we have bought the second, and now the just released third of what is now a series with "Penelope T-Rex". I HIGHLY recommend this book and this author. We are now a fan, and have many of Ryan Higgins' "Bruce" the bear adventures as well. I recommend this book and this author highly. ... show more

  • Good Messaging
Format: Hardcover
This symbolic story about bullying is fun to read. It is a bit obscure so a child under the age of five might not get it. But it is a fun way to discuss bullying with your child. No one likes someone who would eat them or be mean. A good segue to letting a child that if you want to be liked you have to be kind. ... show more

  • Families and classrooms will laugh, love, and learn from Penelope!
Format: Hardcover
One of the magical gifts of stories is how we may see ourselves and examine our behavior without pointing a shaming finger, We Don't Eat Our Classmates gifts its readers with this magic. Penelope is a T-Rex, and well, humans ARE on the food chain for this cute little dinosaur. Penelope is endearing, she has to deal with the unexpected surprise that she is an a school full of HUMANS, she has to deal with her innate desire to eat these delicious classmates, and find a way to curb this desire as she does wish to make friends, not eat them! Families and classrooms will love Penelope, laugh out loud at the difficulties Penelope faces, her classmates' reactions, and how she has the opportunity to experience "How would you feel if someone did that to you?". Readers will also have the opportunity to identify themselves with Penelope (hopefully not because they've eaten a classmate!), comparing actions they have taken that were not in the best interest of themselves or others, and explore how they did, or can, turn these situations around, learn from them, use empathy, start over and make friends. Humor is one of the best ways to make tough discussions accessible! ... show more
