Water shoes are tough to rate because there is no such thing as the right water shoe for every application. That said, I can point out where the shoe in person might be the same/different than the ad. I've deducted a star here simply because these ran so much larger than expected. If the fit isn't tight, traction is poor. In my case, I should have gotten the next size down. That said, the application I'm most interested in is tide pooling, on rocks. Trying these on, I think an actual shoe that is designed for tidepooling, with the support of a real shoe, is a better choice. These water shoes would be great for things like snorkeling and body surfing, where there are sea urchins you want to avoid and maybe sharp but small rocks, or wading into creeks where you don't need the support of a water shoe that is like an actual shoe. These water shoes have a good, light sole with great traction. I've had water shoes with similar design that had much too heavy a sole and thus were unusable. These strike a good balance--but again, it's going to depend on using them where they work best. I had expected because of the shape of these in the web ad that they would be snug fitting with some structure, but they have no structure in the body of the shoe. What you get will not look like a structured foam, the way it appears they might in the ad. The structure in their photos is shown as if someone's foot is inside the shoe and the fit is snug for their foot. The toe seems much narrower in the ad photo than in the shoes I got. These water shoes are actually quite wide--not the sole, just the fabric. But as delivered, the shoe has no structure at all, it's just stretchy material over a sole with good traction. The advantage is that they will store flat, and will take up hardly any space or weight in a suitcase. I got the "dark gray stripes, size 7-8 Women/6-7 Men" water shoes for myself but my 11yo ended up liking them and used them for swimming on our recent vacation. The water shoes fit me prefectly and are comfortable to walk, run, and swim in. For referencing purposes, my feet measure 9.5 inches long and are 4.5 inches wide so I wear 7.5 wide shoes or size 8 regular. My 11yo normally wears a size 6.5 or 7 in women's and she fit these water shoes well, too. Since the shoes are made of a thick stretchy fabric and have a plastic sole, they are easy to put on and take off and fit pretty snug. I plan to get the whole family water shoes to avoid stepping on sharps or potentially getting fungal infections on the feet. I liked these water shoes so much, I got the "1-Black sripes new, size 5-6 Women/4-5 Men" water shoes for my 10yo son because he loves the water, but I don't want him going to the beach, swimming pools, or water parks barefooted in case he steps on something sharp or gets athletes feet. These water shoes are the prefect solution! He wears a size 4.5 or 5 in big kids shoes and feet measure 9 inches. The water shoes fit him prefectly because the cloth is stretchy and is pretty forgiving for wide feet, too. He loves them! Would definitely recommend these water shoes!
